My husband & I owned fancy mice previously. One was so easy going & the other one was skittish but we were able to handle them both. However, after a couple of years, both mice passed away.
About a month ago, I was in PetsMart & we bought a couple of new mice. These mice are not friendly at all.... I can not bring my hand close to them without them squealing and running away. My husband managed to get a mouse but it freaked out and bit his hand hard and broke the skin. He bled. We still have these mice for about a month and we still are not able to handle them. I tried to offer them a treat with my hand but they refuse and hide. I think these mice have not been socialized to human handling at all before my husband & I purchased them.

We really love our little fancy mice. We have two females. One was the mother of like 40 of them and the other is one of her little daughters. The younger one has loved people from the start. The older one tried to get away when we went to pick her up for the first couple weeks, but now she's very chill and used to us. They are both very sweet, and they never bite.

I really hope that people refer to the care guildlines that can be found on this website, instead of going by what one of the previous posters has written. "annaspets" seems to say the opposite of what the experts at petsmart say about habitats and little "igloo" houses, ect. Our mice love their critter trail habitat and you can buy extra tubes and stuff to attach. I think they would get pretty hot in an aquarium. They smell does not seep into the hard plastic of the habitat...We empty all the carefresh bedding and wash the cage and all parts with dishsoap and water every other day. At least every other day or the smell would be unbareable for us. We do not want our house to stink and believe me, it would if we didn't keep their cage clean. I cannot possibly fathom how the smallest package of bedding could last a month...we buy the largest package and that lasts a month.

Anyway, they are wonderful pets and they make my daughter very happy. I recommed following the care instructions and guides that are on this website, or asking questions at petsmart, they are always happy to help.

PERFECT pets for a child 10+

A responsible child that is ten or older could easily take care of these little sweethearts. They NEVER stink as long as you take care of them. Buy them a 10-20 gallon aquarium, and they will have the best life ever! :) If you keep them in a store bought cage with a plastic bottom, they WILL stink and there is no way to prevent it. Odors sink into plastic and stay. That's why I recommend an aquarium with carefresh ultra bedding, because it's glass. The carefresh ultra also helps control odors. Best bedding yet.

These little babies love to be held as long as you give them a day or two to settle in. They are one of the cheapest pets you can get. My 10 gallon aquarium cost double the price of them and all their supplies to set up!

Make sure you buy them a good food and some toys. If you want them to live longer, you NEED, and by that I mean you ABSOLUTELY MUST feed them fruits and veggies as AT LEAST 25% of their diet. Don't go over 50% though, or else they will get diarrhea.

In the summer to keep them cool I fill a stainless steel bowl 1/4 of the way with water, freeze it overnight, and then put it in their cage. It works as an air conditioner if you have an aquarium for them, and they love to rub up against it and "skate" on it to keep themselves cool.

Remember to get them a well-ventilated lid. For a cheaper way to do this, you can buy window screening material and cut it to fit the top of the tank. It will only cost about $3 and you'll have a ton left over for later projects.

Regular water bottles DO NOT WORK. Believe me, I've tried everything. Taping them to the tank, gluing them (bad idea), even using velcro. You need to get a water bottle made for an aquarium. Search 'Aquarium water bottle' and it should pop up. It's one of the cheapest water bottles, and it's the perfect size for mice.

I do not recommend buying an 'igloo' or a 'natural tree trunk'. They LOVE an empty tissue box cut in half. It makes the perfect little hidey-hole for them. Also remember to give them LOTS of empty toilet paper/paper towel rolls to play with. My mice love them more than any other toy I could ever give them.

Here are the products I COMPLETELY recommend for mice, after trying a lot of things:

- Top Fin 10 gallon glass aquarium (14.99)
- Aquarium water bottle (5.49)
- Small ceramic teal bowl (1.99)
- Vitasmart mouse, rat, and gerbil food (4.24 on sale)
- Carefresh ultra (smallest package $8.99, will last about a month. If you like it, I recommend buying the biggest size the second time)
- Mesh wheel ($4.99 for the mini, perfect size for most mice)
- Willow Gardens pretzel stick chews ($1.99 for a TON of sticks. Best (and cheapest) thing I've ever bought for my mice)
- Yummy drop treats ($2.99. These are good for getting your mice to love you)
- Mini run around ball (4.99. SO CUTE when they use these)
- Critter bath powder ($3.99 14 oz package. They love to clean themselves with it)
- Colored chews ($2.54. Not sure exactly what they're called, but they're adorable)

The run around ball comes with a ton of treats and a coupon inside. I also recommend the nut-knot nibblers.

All in all, BUY THESE PETS. The males STINK, the females don't if you spot clean their cage often and replace all the bedding and wash all the toys once a week. These are lower maintenance than my fish, but they love me so much and recognize me every day when I come home. They love to be played with and can be trained to do so many cool things. Look on youtube and watch all of the videos on the channel 'mouseagility'.

If you're a kid and want to convince your parents to let you get mice, show them the videos on the channel mentioned above. Also, tell them that they can run around in the little balls. That's what got me mice, although I did have to pay for all of it. :)

Sorry I can't put photos up because I'm not allowed to but trust me, these little guys will melt your heart with those huge ears :)

I have 2 Fancy Mice. Their perfect pets for someone who wants something simple but cute. My girls love to give me kisses and enjoy getting treats. They love to climb on you and will get in your hair to nest. I've had my girls for almost a year and I enjoy every moment.

I always had pet mice when I was younger! Now I'm moving off to college and I'm limited to fish, but if you have a stable life, get some mice. They're the cutest little balls of furry fun you'll ever have! They're great for building respondsibility in small children (with older supervision), and they're great companions for older kids, teens, and adults.

They like to climb, so try to get them a big cage. Never use cedar shavings for bedding! One con is that they're squeezier than most other rodents and can get out of cages. I usually kept my young mice in terrariums until they were too big to get out of bird cages. It can also be a bit hard to find people who will watch them when you go on vacation.

I got two mice two weeks ago, I love them them so much! Their names are Minnie, and Trixie. They are such great pets. I can't exolain how much I love them. I love how social they are, I hold mine all the time. They are so active, I love them so much!!
You should deffinatly get one. They aren't expensive!

I bought a male mouse from petsmart and I love him. He looks very healthy, very active, decently tamed, and just an all around good pet. Only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because they don't offer female mice, I think a couple females would've suited my household better instead of a single male, can't do males together without fighting.

I got two mice that were kept in diffent cages and I was told not to put them together because they would fight but they are like best friends. I love mice. However one of them were really stinky and I dont know how to get rid of his smell

I purchased a Female mouse from Petsmart in July of 2012. Her name is Howard, Dont ask why I choose what I did but I think the name fits her well. She was very shy and very energetic at first. She didnt like to be touched, Was scared of my hand... The whole nine yards. After about 2 weeks she slowly started to warm up to me. Now I can reach my hand in her cage and she jumps right into it. Im so thrilled with the Mouse I purchased I will be getting 2 more sometime soon, I think they are a wonderful pet and good for young children. My 2 yearold nephew loves her and shes so calm and loving when shes in his hands. I couldnt be more happy with her!

I bought my first mouse, around July. She was very shy, but very sweet. After reading that mice were better in pairs, I went back to the store and got another in August. It was easy to introduce them as I had gotten a new cage and they just shared the territory. All in all, these make great pets and are fun to watch. They like to play together and snuggle, even in your hands! They are very soft, but if you're looking for a small pet that will cuddle with you, these aren't a good choice. Perhaps a rat would be better. The only problem I've had with my babies is that they like to force their bedding out of the cage, but that is probably my fault somehow for giving them too much.

I had had about 17 pet mice. I got my first 3 about 3 years ago and they have passed. I got another 3 at UT animal camp. The teacher said they were all boys but then, one ended up having twelve babies. It is hard to tell gender on mice but overall they are the best small animal pets.

my mouse, Rosie, is the cutest mouse on Earth. Every morning she says goodnight to me and then goes to sleep. At dusk she runs in her wheel a lot and plays with her toys and her favorite is her chewable, bendable hideout . she climbs all over it and snuggles in it! The only reason she is slow is because she took four months getting used to me. It was hard not being able to hold her but know she lets me pick her up when i wear socks on my hands!!! in the pic i included she is in her play ball but you can't see her face :(

My pet mouse, Smiles, recently passed away, but she was a terriffic pet! She lived for 2.5 years and was very loved. She did not require a lot of work and I played with her frequently. I took her out of her cage twice a day; once in the morning and once in the early evening. She was so perfect and beautiful. She even crawled up on to my shoulder and played with my hair! I would definitely reccomend these very very sweet pets, but only for people 12+ who will not drop them, squeeze them, scare them, etc. I hope you love your mouse! :)

I recently got two female mice who are low maintenance pets and very fun to watch and hold. They love to play with each other and they built a nest to sleep in. I love them and they are super cute! They are very high quality and disease free. They are as easy to take care of as a fish but as rewarding as a dog. They are the perfect pet for anyone who is looking to adopt a low maintenance pet. They are cheep, easy to care for, cute, and they can bond to you. My mom didn't like the idea of me getting mice but after a week of me having them she fell in love with them.

First I have one male mouse and by tomorrow I will be getting a female. His name is Pastulio and he is the sweetest little thing in the world. At first he didn't really like me but now he walks all over my arms and goes in my hair sometimes. If you want a pet that loves you for being you and is always sweet and smart, fancy mice are the way to go.... I can't wait to see what new one I'm getting tomorrow XD
