A friend gave me this aquarium, because they could not keep anything alive in it. They did no realize that the smaller the tank, the more frequent the water changes MUST be... not just for appearance/algae, but because the fish build ammonia so fast! I change about 50% of the water out every 2 weeks or so.
My betta has lived here happily for about a year now. These little fish's personalities really come out when given the right living conditions, and this starter kit provides that: room to swim (and space to add decorations), enough water to maintain healthy conditions, and a heater. I took the filter off when I realized my little betta was getting blown around the tank by the water current, but fish with smaller and more functional fins will do just fine. I've moved several times with it, and even though I know I've banged it around, it does not have a single scratch.
Unlike many small tanks that use LED lights, this tank is suitable for growing small aquarium plants. My only small complaint is that the light in the hood has no sort of cover to protect it from the condensation. This really does not bother me much, since I'm still experimenting with wattage and brands to find a bulb that I really like. I have to replace it about once a year.
My tank is about 6 years old, and still in great condition. Totally recommended.
Pros: easy to clean, sturdy, easy to install

Larry (Fantail) and Pugsley (Black Moor) are thrilled to live in this little tank.
Sadly, they will grow out of it eventually and need a bigger home, but for now, they're living it up happily.
This aquarium is perfect for my desk at work. It could be perfect for your desk too!

When I first got my Beta Fish, Craily, he was in a little two liter box. The water was cold and he would barely move. So I got him this tank (with a water heater) and I am very happy with this tank. He moves all over and loves the space. The filter is a little too strong for him and pushes him around but the tank is a perfect size for him and my room. The filter does keep the tank clean and crystal clear while being very quiet! And the kit came with tropical fish food and water conditioner and coupons to get more of the same stuff! Overall the size, filter, and overall greatness makes it a very awesome tank!

I took a dab of clear silicone and sealed up the base of the light bulb fixture. I also put in an LED replacement bulb. I smeared a bit of vasoline on the bulb base to keep it protected. We have hard water. So far so good. I take the filter cartridge out every couple weeks and rub and rinse out the guck under a rinse of cool water from the tap, then put it back. I clean off the end of the filter intake tube too. It gets kind of cloggy sometimes, and that cuts down the flow. I transferred my plant and fish from the little bowl he was in for 2 years (miraculously) and they are thriving, and I can see him better now. Maybe soon get him a buddy. thanks.

Corroded Light / filter not powerful enough

Bought this for the office to replace a 3-yr-old baby BioOrb that housed 3 rasboras. Loved the look of it, easy to set up, quiet filter. The MiniBow light fixture corroded out after 4 months, and the manufacturer would not replace it, nor could they sell me a replacement hood with a new light fixture in it. There are no bow-style hoods this size by other brands.
At home own a standard 10 gallon glass aquarium with a Whisper filter for 7 years, and my eldest guppy is 5, the youngest is 2 1/2. I moved the rasbora home, and moved 2 guppies into the MiniBow. After about 7 months, the filter could not keep up and the water became dirtyish even with regular changes and vacuuming. Most of the water poured over the filter cartridge and was not cleaned at all. I read that other users recommended buying a more powerful filter and "cutting" the hood to fit it. What with the busted light, I just replaced the MiniBow with a Fluval Edge 6 gallon that is warranteed for 2 years, not 90 days.
The smaller aquariums require much more maintenance and diligence than the larger ones, if you're looking for a "starter" I would not recommend a small tank.

This tank is ok. First off the tank was not in direct sunlight and algae grew. And also the filter is too small and its the same size as the 2.5 gallon tank from the same company. Overall this product is ok but I dont think its te best product out there.
