We purchased this heater for my sons betta tank back in December and here it is June and I'm not really sure when it quit working. I noticed on the last water change there was a mark on the bottom that looked like it was melted from the inside out. Figured it would be good until the next water change and kept a close eye on the fish. On the next water change the heater is puffed out.... Thankfully the fish is okay!! On the search for a new one in the morning..

I got this heater because I have a 1 gallon aqueon tank that i was using for a dwarf crayfish while I setup a larger tank. After my crayfish was in my larger tank we ended up getting a male betta and this heater works great but I did notice once it got over 1 gallon that the heater started to work less so for 1 gallon or less this is a great heater. Looks great under the gravel and I was hiding the cord with a plant so I personally love this heater.

I wish I read the reviews before I bought this item. Sadly I didn't. It never warmed up. I assumed it would after awhile but it doesn't. Very disappointed. Buyer beware!

This heater never warmed up my Betta's water. His water is constantly cold. I knew it wasn't broken when I took it out of the package because after a while I could feel it warm to the touch. But it just never warmed up the water when I put it in his tank. Don't waste your money on this product.

Like others have experienced, I purchased this heater for a small Betta tank and it stopped working after 2 weeks. The concept is nice, but obviously there is a quality issue with this product.

I have had this heater for my 2.5 gallon MiniBow tank for about six months now and am overall pleased with its performance. It heated the water up to 80 degrees in about five hours and maintained a good temperature. I noticed that when the water got too hot it turned off--something that I didn't read in the packaging. One of the cons is that after a water change this heater takes about 24 hours to get on its feet and start heating, but so long as I make sure that the water is warm when I put it in the tank this is not a problem.
I like the fact that this heater is under gravel and doesn't get in the way of the decor, leaving the fish plenty of space to swim around. The suction cup on the side keeps the cord from swaying in the water.
For the price, this is a great product. If you don't want a really top-quality heater, I'd recommend that you purchase this product.

I purchased this yesterday for my 1 gallon betta bowl. It did heat up the water initially then it just stopped working. It was barley warm to the touch and could not raise the water temperature more than 1 degree. Now I have to go out and buy a new heater today.

After a week of installing the heater I cleaned the tank. When I reinstalled, it didn't work anymore. I followed the directions to a T, but it just went out on me. It's easy as pie to use, but it died out way too fast. I wish I'd read this reviews before I purchased this product.

Unless you've got the magic room that stays at a stable 70F and never, ever fluctuates, this is not the right product for heating. It's not certain of how much higher than room temperature it will go (so you'd have to figure out your product's tolerance through experience), and whether or not it's even stable is a guess at best. Do your fish a favor and put it in the right size tank. For a betta, go for three gallons at absolute minimum and get a programmable heater

I purchased this little heater for a 3-gallon aquarium. The directions say to not use it unless it's submerged in water. So I cycled my tank for 2 days before I bought my betta, and also had a thermometer inside as well. The temp was 76, which indicates it's safe for tropical fish. But as time went on, esp. while changing out the water, I noticed the water was very cold, and the little betta seemed sluggish. Instead of the temp maintaining, it started to drop, esp. if the air conditioner was on. I finally took out the heater and plugged it in separately to see if any heat came from the pad, and I couldn't feel anything. I believe it stopped working after 1 week. So, now I'm on the search for a small heater that is adjustable and more predictable. I wouldn't recommend this heater based on my experience only.

I bought this as a beginner at bettas for my 2 gallon tank, which was right in the middle of the recommended tank size for this heater. The installation was a breeze, and the price was great for a kid low on money. However, after 48 hours, I noticed that the aquarium was feeling very hot, and my betta wasn't very active or excited about food. I looked at the thermoneter for the first time, and it read 96 degrees! I quickly removed it, and know I can't find it to return it. Oh well.

I bought one of these for a 1.5 gal. tank, housing a beta about 5 months ago. It seemed like it was working alright, though I believe this tank is advertised to heat 5 to 10 degrees over room temperature? My room regularly floats around 68 degrees. When I look at the thermometer in the morning, the water in the tank is the same temperature as my room, even though the heater is plugged in. Sure it heats up later, as does the room temperature after we turn the heater on, but it's supposed to keep it warmer than room temperature, not at room temperature! So I'm beginning to doubt the heater works for a decent period of time...shame. For a little more, I could've bought a different heater instead of wasting money on one that gives out in such a short period of time. I do like the fact that I can bury it under the gravel though. The fish tank is small enough as it is.

I wanted a heater that would be big enough to efficiently heat the new tank I'm getting my male crowntail Betta at Christmas (the 3 gallon version of the Hawkeye 360 tank sold at Petsmart currently), but small enough that I could use it in the one I have him in now (a 1/2 gallon acrylic tank) without being too strong or taking up too much space. So far, this little heater is meeting the latter of those criteria beautifully.
I set up my tank as normal, with the only differences being a new plant, new gravel (more like new decorative glass pebbles, my fish greatly prefers them over traditional gravel), and, of course, the heater itself. Everything else was put in as normal, and I used the same water conditioner as I usually do. The round shape made for somewhat limited placement in my tank, but that wasn't surprising given that the tank has a rather unique shape. However, in a traditional round bowl like the kind my roommate has her Betta in, I can see its design being an extreme advantage.
Currently, it's about 75 degrees in my house, which is VERY rare, as normally my family keeps it MUCH cooler year-round. When I plugged the heater in, the water was about 72 degrees and the house thermostat read 74. After hitting room temperature, however, the heater warmed the water to a more ideal 80 degrees within 2 hours without stressing my Betta in the least. As of this review, my thermometer is right at 84 degrees. The temperature has gone up only 2 degrees over this past hour and seems to be holding steady, so I'm becoming much more confident that it isn't going to overheat my fish anytime soon.
As for the fish, my little Betta, Luxembourg, seems much, MUCH happier with his new heated digs and is actually looking more vibrant. Then again, that might just be his new diet kicking in, or my imagination at work. All in all, I'm extremely satisfied with this heater and will be recommending it to my roommate for her Betta as well.
Pros: efficient, well designed, safely heats smaller bowls, acrylic safe, goes under gravel
Cons: wish it could be set to a specific temperature, none!
