We were sick and tired of using towels to contain our cats' food and water area, so after seeing a few mats at my local PetSmart, I was won over by the lipped design.
The great thing about this mat is that almost all the spilled food and water is contained within it's edge so clean up is a breeze. When cleaning the area I typically dump the uneaten food in the container, pick up any stray pieces of kibble and put them in the dirty bowls, and trash the extra kibble. Then I'm just able to clean everything, including the mat, and everything is ready for the next meal.
Reading the other reviews, I am thankful to not have experienced the sliding issues of other reviewers and that must be due to the weight of my cats' water bowl. The only negatives I can see is the material scratches easily an shows wear quickly, and it is a tad small if one tries to use average-sized bowls in conjunction with a water bowl (my cats eat out of smaller saucers so this one's a non-issue for me).
Ultimately, this mat has made feedings incredibly easy and I just love how simple it is to clean!
Pros: durable, easy to clean, Spillproof
Cons: Doesn't Hold Enough Food or Water

I bought this to catch food & water spills from ruining the wood floor. I got the clear one in store and placed it on top of his existing placement - a human one with a vinyl top and foam backing. The design shows through 90-95% - so I am v. pleased! The placemat sits pretty much within the borders of this mat. I do not have the problem the other reviewer has of it sliding around ever at all. (Maybe the placemat underneath helps?) It can hold a LOT of water (like when my husband bumps the cat's dish - grrr). I mop it up w/ paper towels in place tho. It is not super flimsy to carry - like if you held one end when dry, the other wouldn't flop down (like w/ a regular place mat). But it is not rigid like say a boot tray (for human boots) doormat would be. But if you picked it up w/ water in it holding BOTH ends, you could carry it like a serving tray w/ no probs to the kitchen sink. The little pawprints in "etched glass" are a v. cute touch, btw. Oh, and it catchs 99.9% of the food he gets out of his dish -- he gets about 75% on the floor rather than in his tummy, lol!! I even have a dish UNDER his dish to try to catch it! I just empty the 8-10 crunchies in the catch-dish and the 2-5 on the placemat each morning/night. Much easier than chasing them out from under the bookcase and rug as I had to before I got this palcemat for him, lol!!
Pros: easy to clean, Spillproof

I bought this product liking the fact that it has bumpers on the sides to keep water from getting all over the floor, but found out that the bumpers are irrelevant when you pick up the mat to clean. When you go to pick up the mat to clean the water and food on it spill everywhere anyways because the mat itself is flimsy and not sturdy at all. The mat also moves around all over the floor when my cat uses it causing more spillage. I have to put a towel underneath to prevent from moving around so much and catch spills.
