Very effective, but difficult

I purchased the 43" crate for my 45 lb pitbull/hound mix. She suffers from extreme separation anxiety and would find ways to break out of her old crate even if we used zip-ties or additional locks. The sliding doors were just what we needed to ensure that she would not break out. It's very heavy-duty and sturdy. The crate does come with removable travel handles; however, it is extremely heavy and I don't see how anyone would move this thing easily. I wish the sliding doors were easier to use. When you try to open/shut them the handle bars get in the way and lock up on you. Overall though, I really enjoy the sliding doors and think I will get over the difficulty of use after a while.
Overall I am very happy with my purchase!

I bought this crate for my 9 year old lab who needs to be crated when I'm out. Well in less than one hour she managed to destroy the tray which is made of cheap plastic. I get the door concept as well, but there are some design flaws in the side panels that leave gaps, and the side door seems like any creative dog will manage to escape. It's probably fine for a low key dog, but a dog with any kind of anxiety will find a way to get out.

We bought the largest crate we could find for our 95 lb. dog who recently had back surgery and needed to be kept quiet and confined. The Kong crate is wonderful - sturdy and easy to use. It has a pull-up gate along the length, and a swing-type door on the end. Our dog can stand up, move around and stretch out comfortably in this crate. We can easily get inside the crate to change bedding. We highly recommend it!

Bought this crate 6 months ago. Love the slide-up doors on the front and side. (Hate the safety stops but was able to disable them by bending the catch-tabs with pliers). The pad is durable, fits perfectly and is easy to vacuum. Assembly was a snap. Overall quality of design, workmanship and materials is very good. The crate is strong and escape proof for my energetic & smart 23 lb. Jack Russell/border collie mix. I started out looking at less expensive options but the quality of this product won me over and I remain highly satisfied.

I have two dogs in the 20 lbs range. I wanted a crate that had a side door with a divider. I bought the Large crate and with the divider in the middle I can crate them together but separated and safe. With the side door both dogs can enter or exit their side of the crate. The door can be half way or fully raised depending on need or height of the dog. As I'm using the divider as a permanent partition I used pliers to fully close the hooks/clasps connecting the divider to the ceiling and back wall of the crate. Setup was straight forward with the included instructions.

Needed reinforcements

May 9, 2013

This is one of the better cages I found. However, my pitbull was still able to break out of the cage. There are many flaws in the design which allow a very active strong dog to easily dislodge the front/back of the cage and get free. I had to reinforce these week points with padlocks to keep them from seperating.

Bought the crate but found out it's a newly designed crate that does not match the picture on the Website. I need to use my foot to close one of the doors on the crate because it does not line up. Product pictured as of March 2013 works a lot better. Will need to check all products at the Petsmart store to see who is the real maker of the item.....

We bought this because our 11 month old Shiba with separation anxiety issues was too noisy for the neighbors when when we were away and he was outside in his dog run. He'd already shredded one couch, two floors and a wall, so leaving him unconstrained isn't an option.
The first time he was in the Kong crate for an hour, he had already started to shred the separate, extra cost Kong pad. After two or three more times, he'd started to bend the wires that form the groove for the larger door making it difficult to open and close. On the 4th day, he pushed all the way through the bottom/side of the door and was sitting on the couch when we came home.
If a 20-lb. Shiba puppy, taking melatonin for anxiety can get out of the intermediate size crate, I can't imagine a big dog being contained.
These products do not meet the reputation I've come to expect from Kong products.
I guess we're still looking for a solution to keeping our dog contained two mornings a week. I can't even find any mention of crates on the Kong web page to find out more from them.

We got this crate to house our rescue lab/shepherd mix at bed time. She is 50lbs and about a year old and was using the large breed size. In less than 6 hours she bent the bars on the end, forced 4 latches and slid the end door up 2 inches to squeeze out under.....she also ate the tray. It seems like a well built crate but if you have a determined dog this will not stop them.

This kennel is a great idea, but after my dogs pushed both doors out of the slides with their faces I am forced to tie the door on the top and bottom every time I put them in. as well as wire the corners together because the little hooks that hold the corners together are no match for my two Alaskan huskies. I have had the kennel for about a year and a half now and it is still alive, but for it to work for most bigger dogs you will need to make some adjustments to it if you want to hold your dogs for more than a few hours.

It has been 3 weeks now and we are totally happy with this crate. We had a soft-sided crate before this which our partially crate-trained dog damaged. This one is much better, no escape, no damage - even though she is still in the process of being crate-trained. Love the garage-style door, major space saver.

I have a ten year old border collie who has used a wire crate with a swing out door for six plus years. Early December 2012, he broke the crate (not sure how). I purchased the Kong because of the brand and because it was supposed to be stronger. Well, the crate is still in one piece, but my dog has figured out how to get out. He manages to "roll" the door up part way until the safety latch catches and then he just slinks out the half open door. That is the only drawback to the "garage door" style. So be WARNED - if you have a smart dog, it might learn how to open the door!
If you have a dog that isn't a known escape artist, this crate should work just fine.

Purchased this crate because of the garage style door . Perfect for the area I wanted to put it in . Very pleased with the quality and the ease of set up doors work well when used properly. Great for a sleeping space. Likely not the best choice for a dog not already crate trained as it does take longer to close the door then on a swinging door but certainly a space saver when opening the door is a problem. If your plan is to leave the door open and let the dog use the crate at its leisure it is perfect. I do not have a boisterous dog so not aware of any issues regarding strength.

After having 3 plastic crates over the years, it was time to try a wire version. We looked at several styles and finally found the Kong version. Wow, nice features and very good construction. We needed the ability to travel in our car with it collapsed and this one fits the bill very nicely. I love the fact the doors don't open outward, pull up and lay on the top. It allow us to keep the door or both open without the door swinging into the room. More than once with other crates, we've wanted the dog to use the crate, but the door had "swung" shut. This unit is very nicely designed and seems fully functional.
One word - putting a dog that has not been crate trained from an early age into a crate is not a good idea. Training - training - training, keeps both your pet safe and the krate in good condition.
We love it and so does our dog. Good job KONG!

55lb recuse pit bull. Was very difficult for her when I first adopted and opened the front door without issue. I quickly opted for padlocks at each corner to connect the panels together. That worked. I know a rescue that does the same with zip ties. She's not a chewer so I can't say if escape artists that will really bite the bars can bend them enough to get out, but she certainly tried her very best, even bending some wires. But the padlocks held tight. We only use the front door. I've never used another brand of wire crate so nothing to compare to. Consistency, patience, positive reinforcement, & exercise (physical & mental) are the keys to preventing the urge to escape. But while you're working on that, this crate provides a safe and cozy house for your pup!

We just got this crate in Large for our 60lb 1-year old Rottie/Shep mix. She took to it right away because she was crated at her foster home. It is large enough for her and we also have her water and food bowls in there. I like how the bars are black instead of standard grey metal, it makes it look a little better in your home. Also I love the garage-style doors, we leave it wide open whenever we're home so she has the option to go in, and the door just sits flatly on top out of the way. Very convenient for our apartment, where you're always looking to save space.
Set up was easy, we didn't even need the instructions, just figured it out ourselves and it was up in 5 minutes. It was very hard to get it out of the cardboard box though probably due to its weight. I had to cut the entire box completely open.
I will say the tray could have been made out of a more durable material. Other reviews say their dogs (probably a bit crazier than mine) ripped it up into pieces. While our dog doesn't and wouldn't try this, I do see completely how it could happen. It's a bit brittle and there was a small chip out of it already straight out of the box. Also when stepped on it taps a bit against the bottom bars, so I would suggest using the foam-like protector sheets from its packaging and laying that between the bottom crate bars and the tray. It's not a big deal, but it's something other people have mentioned and I notice a tiny bit.
The only other thing I have to mention is it took a bit of breaking in to get the doors to sit flatly on the top of the crate. At first it laid at a 45 degree angle and we figured that wasn't right, so I just kept breaking it in, up and down, until it sits flatly every time you put it up there.
All in all I do really like this crate, and so does my pooch :)

I've been using this crate for a month now and it's been great. My Shiba is actually quite calm in it and so far I've had no issues with her trying to break out, so I'm not the best to comment on it's durability.
The door is easy to use with one hand, but it's not like other traditional latch crates. There's a 10 second learning curve for the pet owner. I like how you can open/close it halfway so it makes putting your pet away quickly very easy especially if they don't want to stay in the crate.
The divider of course makes training easier and the crate more adaptable. So far I haven't needed to use the larger door and I don't think my dog even knows there's a second door. I cover the crate with a blanket so it keeps it like a den-like home.
It is a wire crate and a determined dog I'm sure will get out of any wire crate, this one is durable enough for my small dog.

Anyone one who rates this crate poorly has never had another brand of crate crate!! the kong crates wire is twice as thick of any other brand also has twice as many clips holding the frames together and I know I have had three other of the so called top brands… and by far this crate is way stronger and better designed the others all have the slide pin type of latch or latches my Mastiff/Pitbull cross can unlatch both of these and walks right on out. I totally recommend this crate if your dog pushes the bottom out of track it is because you have not closed it properly !! the bottom track goes inside the cage just a bit so when pushed it hits the wide metal sheet across the bottom of the door not just to the bottom of the track.
