I got 2 of the Leporinus Fasciatus a little over a year ago. At the time I had 4 Angel fish, 3 Gourami's, 2 blackfin cat fish, 3 black skirts and a pleco. The Leporinus Fasciatus were small and I was advised they were not aggressive, that is why I went and bought them, but within a month they killed all my Angelfish, then a month later they killed the Gourami's and 2 of the black skirts. I now only have the 2 Leporinus Fasciatus, 2 Blackfin catfish, 1 black skirt and my pleco. I wouldn't really recommend them if you are putting in a tank already established. They are pretty and very active. My 2 weren't the same size when I bought them but small and still aren't the same size but my biggest one is approx. 13 inches or more. I do have a 125 gal tank so there is plenty of room for 6 fish. Sad thing is no one wants them when you want to get rid of them.

When I bought my leporinus he was only 4 inches long, after a month he killed all of the fish in my tank, including my bala shark. He's now 12 inches long and has been living alone for 3 years and plays peek-a-boo with my cats. He hides under a piece of driftwood all day and comes out only to eat the flake/pellet food I feed him. I keep his tank at 78 degrees, with strong filtration, and I add blackwater conditioner weekly. He's constantly redecorating, moving mountains of sand around and ripping plants out.

I have read some reviews some bad,Some good bout this fish.I have 4 of them temporarily in my 30 since they are small. However I have not seen them be aggressive towards each other, they seem to be extremely respectful of my other fish. They are fun to look at and I love their "saltwater colors",I do have some caves which are all the same looking and they seem to love hiding here and there. Some fish will fight over a particular cave in my experience maybe that's why I've had look with them since they are all the same. Also I do not have any long finned fishes in this tank, hope this helps...

I still am not sure if I have a Leporinus affinis or Leporinus fasciatus. He is not quite as big as the ones I saw at Newport Aquarium, but is still pretty large for a home aquarium. Mine has a reddish color on his chin, but tail shape and same number of strips as specimen above. Do not buy one unless you have at least a 75 gallon aquarium. Mine quickly grew to about 11" long. The pet store had him labeled wrong (at 7" to 9"). He has been great fun. He was aggressive at first (murdered a pleco and drove another pleco to "suicide") but ever since he lost his teeth 2 years ago, he has been just a "big fish". Mine likes his veggie rounds and comes to the glass to ask for them. If you do have one or more of these fish, I highly recommend having some driftwood. Mine lost his teeth nibbling on the driftwood. Also, be careful when doing water changes. When stressed out, mine will jump. So far, he hasn't jumped out. While lots of fun, I won't buy another one. From what I have read about these fish, I have been lucky. Mine is almost 5 years old now - and gets along with all of my fish except my featherfin catfish (they both want to "own" the driftwood log).

These fish are pretty but they are very aggressive. I put a plecostomus in the tank with my three leporinus fasciatuses and they ate the plecostomus's eyes out in 5 min. So be carefull what other fish you put with them.
I have my leporinus fasciatus with a green severum, upside down catfish, and a jack dempsey. They do nip a little but they get together fine.
They are jumpers so put something heavy on the top of the tank. Mine have jumed out 3 times. I got them back into the tank A.S.A.P. They are all safe now.
They are great fish to have if you have the right tank and friends in the tank.
Pros: pretty
Cons: aggressive

Cave Dweller

I have had this fish for a few years now. I wish I would have never bought it. All it does is hide in a cave. And when it is out swimming around, as soon as it sees someone, it swims back to its cave. I have it with some semi-aggressive fish. So far everyone seems to get along. Despite the fact that I've had two fish disappear (I'm not pointing fingers).
Pros: pretty, grows fast
Cons: hides all day

Ok lets start at the begining. 40 gallons will house this fish for about 1 year, they have a 10+year life expectancy when cared for properly. they get over a foot long, and are very active. they require at least 100 gallons each. they will eat algea off of plants, plants, small fish, and love cichlid pellets. they are very special fish. if they get too cold they will die. if they are not fed properly they will die. and if not housed properly they will get stunted and die. if you have a 100+ gallon tank and have the ability to properly care for this fish you will not regret it. they live a long time and will becom very personable. another plus is that they can live with the aggresive african cichlids and central american cichlids. please do your research on these and any other fish before you buy one.
Pros: pretty, can live with aggresive fish
Cons: gets big, sensitive to water quality, needs huge tanks

I've had my leporinus for several months now and have been really happy with him. From everything I've read they are bad fin nippers, but mine hasn't been overly aggressive with my other fish, although it has on occasion nipped at the fins of my angels. Overall he seems to be a peaceful fish. I currently have a 30G tank but hope to get a larger one in the near future so I can accomodate his size better. He was only a little over 1 inch long when I got him and is now already 4 inches, and will only keep growing.
Pros: beautiful and interesting fish to look at, normally pretty peaceful with other fish
