I have my African Cichlid for more that 8years, I do not know if is female or male... How can I tell? I always called it a him .....he is not agressive and the water temperature is the appartment normal temp, I do not have a temp control and its not bad for him. he knows when is feeding time (twice a day just few flakes) but he is alone I do not think he likes company everytime I put a friend inside it does not survive!

I love these fish they are very interesting and have amazing colors. Love when they poke their heads out of holes in my decor. When turning on the moonlight the fish Dance! They swim in prefect circles! They are great fish and are very color full. Never not even once have they faded their color. Recommend these fish to beginner Cichlid caretakers.

Great Fish

I bought two of these to put with the rest of my African Cichlids in my 75 gallon tank and does well with rest of the fish. I was a little worried at first since they don't grow very big, however it stands its ground. I haven't seen the aggression from this fish that some have reported, but they are still juveniles. They love their rock caves and often dig little pits next to them. Overall a good fish if you provide them with space (75 gallon or larger), rocks/caves and keep them with fish that are similar in temperament.

Excellent fish, root diggers though

I got a female one for her excellent color to this day I still have. She is a root digger though and will upturn the gravel. I also find floating plants periodicly. I call her Diddly because she is the smallest of my cichlids truly excellent fish.

I own a yellow Auratus cichlid and I have always wanted one because of their colore and beuty. I current own 5 cichlids. Out of all my auratus is the smallest but he is not a sissy. He sometimes goes to my Jewel cichlid and nips at his fins. I say this fish is a mild agressive cichlid. I love him.

Very Interesting Fish

I bought two, one died shortly after placing them in the aquarium. The Auratus seems to move about deliberatly in the water whereas other fish seem to glide around in the water. For some reason he started moving the gravel around in the bottom of the aquarium. I think he's either trying to escape from the aquarium or looking for food. Another fish put its tail where he was diging and he seemed to look at it, call it a bad fish name and niped its tail until it left the area he was digging. He seems to get along fine with all the other fish I have.

Very nice fish and mine is very friendly with my larger cichlids but was agresive to my acei the same size nice fish still.

Pros: very good looking, friendly, easy to take care of

Cons: can be territorial, can be agressive

I bought a pair of these wonderful fish and I am so happy I did! I have a tank of American cichlids and wanted to set up another tank of African Cichlids. I bought a pair of the yellow with brown and white stripes. I am very happy with them very playful and fun to watch, get along well with my other fish easy to take care of and the price is right.
