It's really fun to watch these fish swim in schools. I keep them with three small koi and a baby painted turtle that's trained to only eat minnows, earthworms, and canned shrimp.

My background is ownership of a pet store for more than 8 years ( high volume fish sales) and raising fish, breeding fish for more than 35 years. I currently have over 30 aquariums in my home.
(1)First secret to happy fish keeping is cycling the aquarium properly. Remove the chlorine and buy the beneficial bacterial colonies. Second add only a few fish the capacity of the aquarium is after 45 days and after the tank is cycled. In other words start a 20 gallon aquarium with just two or three one inch size fish. Test water quality and do small water changes weekly and then monthly after the aquarium is balanced.
(2)Tiger barbs and all similar barb varieties (same body shape)tend to be fin nippers, they chase after sluggish fish and long finned fish and damage the fins. However, they can be a wonderful addition to any aquarium IF you mix them with the correct species of other fish. Most importantly keep them in a school of a minimum of 5 fish and they are mellow, alone or in a pair they tend to be much worse at nipping. Similar species that school together work. Consumers will see many colors of tiger barbs and different sizes, all mix together well. Tinfoil barbs are wonderful and get large, but tend to be peaceful. Cherry barbs and rosey barbs are less nippy. I keep Cherry barbs with very mellow fish species.
For aquariums with cichlids a school of barbs makes the cichlids come out more often and sometimes makes the cichlid tank more balanced. Dither fish are sometimes great for a change in pace from the cichlids in the tank. Angelfish should be large enough to defend themselves from barbs that nip.
Pros: durable and available in many colors and sizes, best kept in schools instead of just one or two
Cons: nippy when not in schools of similar fish
