I just got one of these catfish at the the store. They are awesome to watch and are very aggressive. They are bit territorial though but will get along with fish the same size. They get along with rainbow sharks and angelfish well. If you have 10 gallon tank a good choice is to get a very young rainbow shark, a young angelfish, and a young African Featherfin Catfish, but you might want to move it into a bigger tank later on as they will all grow over 6 in. in length. It is best feed this fish before you turn the lights off because they can be shy to come out with the light on.I love this fish and would definitely recommend it.
Pro: Easy to maintain
Fun watch

Pricey

Great fish but get huge. It says 20 gallon tank but do not put them in a tank under 50 gallons. Also it says they should be in groups of 3 or more but these guys are solitary. They will chase other fish of the same breed. Get along great with every other fish in my tank which is a mix of community and semi aggressive fish.

I find 3 African Featherfin Catfish adorable. They tend to hide in individual little caves they have in the ornaments I have provided in my aquarium. But they all do come out at feeding time which is an hour before the aquarium light goes out.
The are compatible with the other fish in my tank which are 7 Tiber Barbs, 3 Kissing Gourami, 3 dot Gourami.
They are the most expensive fish I have and I hardly see them, but when I do they are adorable.
My tank is 75-gallons so there is plenty of room for the African Featherfin Catfish.
I have uploaded a picture of one of my catfish trying to hide under a rock.

I bought my Featherfin when (he/she) was very small. I wanted to get a buddy for my King Betta. Well with proper care and lots of food my catfish grew very fast. I keep both of them in a 40 gallon breeder tank, which has a lot of surface area for my catfish to roam around in. With bottom feeders, make sure to keep it clean with a gravel vac & have lots of filtration. Just keep in mind that these guys can live a long time "many years". Also if you give your catfish a lot of hiding places, then he will fill comfortable and you will see he more often. If you look at the picture, you can see the whiskers of my catfish poking out of his cave.

I bought one of these at PetSmart as a gift for my son. His was so much fun to watch that I just had to have one for myself. The two fish have very different "personalities". His gets along fine with other catfish, but mine wanted to be the only one. He/she is quite a character! He/she is very happy now that my 6 year old pictus passed away. Mine is bigger than 6" and is rounder - indicating it might be a she (my son's is older than mine - smaller and thinner). He/she is also very protective of her space. She wants to rule the hollowed driftwood log and now seems to have gotten her way. My leporinus has given up control of the log.
Great fish if you have the room. Also, keep an eye on nitrates as mine seems to be more sensitive to nitrates than my other fish.

Initially I bought this catfish because of its interesting markings. Young they start off with zebra-like stripes that later pull apart to uniform dots. The brighter backgrounds tend to fade to a battleship gray, but still an interesting fish to look at. With a little on-line research on the African Featherfin, I found out that this fish can live up to the ripe old age of 25 years or more. This fella (I believe) has been around since my hobby started 10 years ago. Translation, very durable. It has lived in a cramped 10 gal. tank with questionable water conditions and various tank mates who he has out lived. Elmer (yes, the only fish I'd named) is still around very happy in his new 45 gal. tank along with various rainbows and other catfish corys. Special note: invest in a good filter system. Something probably double the capacity. Healthy fish are happy fish.

Approx. 8yrs. ago I bought "Waldo", one of several 100's of known/named varietys Synodontis species, the largest group of Catfishes in Africa, where they can vary tremendously, depending where they call home;Victoria,Malawi/otherS.African Rift Lakes to the Congo River(Zaire)where they are thought to have originated. Because they vary tremendously in size, tempermant &diet, it's best to do some research B4 you bring these fascinating, interactive &intelligent pets home&possibly wreck havoc on established Tanks or miss a chance 2 Njoy these wonderful creatures Bcause Tankmates /environmental factors are preventing him from settling in. My 8yrold. Syno Eupterus, knows his name, initiates games, does his Best Tricks when he wants attention, & is as "BIG" (12" Long) a part of my "Pet Family" as my Cichlid Tanks, Molly Breeding, Adopting the Loves of my life, My dogs. My smaller Synos who share space w/African Cichlids, S. Multipunctatus do well in groups, only grow to approx 4" in length, whereas Waldo doesn't care for any other Catfish company, yet loves the company of Gouramis, Tetras(go figure), Barbs, Danios Lg(4") & Stripped(1"), Bala Sharks (that were together @ start),all at an avg. Ph of 7.2, Temp 78F, unlike smaller "bottom feeders" WILL NOT EAT ALGAE OFF TANK OR DECOR, ask "PETSMART" about appropriate foods, or write me @
Pros: long living, intelligent, can learn games, hearty if cared 4 well, tollerant of small fish, wants to "learn", flexible w/diff. environs
Cons: territorial w/similar, needs atleast 50gal., needs lots of attention

Great Fish!!!!

I bought two of these and one died but they are one of my favorite fish in my tank. They can be kept with African Cichlids and community fish. They grow really fast at first but then slow down. They grow kinda big (in my opinion) but I love feeding them cus thehy come out of hiding and stuff themselves.
Pros: lotsa tankmate choices, hardy
Cons: fins poke holes in the bag, pricey
