These are incredible creatures and are a great addition to most tanks.Just a bit of caution observe them specimen you have picked out very closely because i made the mistake of buying one that had a very bad case of ich. So if you see a healthy fish a your LFS than i highly suggest you buy one of the amazing creatures.

Best Fish EVER!!

I bought this fish about 7 months ago to put in my 55 gallon semi agressive tank. It is the friendliest, coolest, most active fish I have ever owned!! He will come to the surface during feeding and eat shrimp out of my hand! He refuses to eat flake food but he loves shrimp and bloodworms. He has never bothered another fish in my tank. GO BUY THIS FISH!!

I have had a few ABK fish and to say the least, they are unique. The last one I had was in a 37 GAL tank with a pleco and an oscar. The knife and oscar were like best buddies playing and chasing each other around but never hurting each other. The knife likes dark hiding places. I have one of the larger wood shelf ornaments and he made a hole in the gravel to get inside the drain hole in the bottom of it. When he first did that I thought he was gone or dead so i took the wood piece out and he swam out of it. As the others say on here they are picky eaters. I would feed both fish the cichlid pellets and they would both eat them.

I have an albino brown knife, and he is so amazing. I just got him and already he's broken my heart. They have such wonderful, cute little faces and they make faces like goldfish. Wonderful to watch swim around, but not very strong swimmers. They are really cool fish with great personalities, mine is kept with a catfish and a couple angels.

I've had my African Knife Fish for about 2 months now and I've learned a lot about them just by watching him. They enjoy hiding in caves or driftwood but they come out at night. I wouldn't recommend putting them with agressive fish, as it will get it's fins torn. Something interesting that they do is swim to the top for air occasionally. I'd say you should pass on this fish if you're a new fish owner.

I got this fish 2 weeks ago. I love him. He is like the protector of the tank. Sometimes he would swim fast to the top for air then come back down like a rocket. Whenever I go to the tank, he swims out of his "secret hideout" and swim up and down like if he was begging for food. He is really outgoing. I have him in a large tank with 4 angelfish. Another thing i like about this fish is that it will learn to eat fish flakes. At first he only eats bloodworms but when I was feeding my angels flakes and he tried some. Now he eats both fish flacks and bloodworms. Occasionally, I give him a mealworm as a treat. I love this fish
Pros: awesome looking, playful

We like to call this guy "The Protector". Our tank is a pretty agressive group. Leporinus Fasciatus, Clown Loach, Plecostomus, African Brown Knife, Angelicus Botia, Dragon Fish, and a Striped Peacock Eel, Bala Shark and Rainbow Shark. The Leporinus was added late and he is quite bigger then the rest. The Loach and Botia seem to swim and litterally hide behind the Knife for protection from him. Craziest thing ive ever seem. He will swim around in circles very quickly around the leporinus and then go back and protect the lil guys. Now they all seem to get along, but you can always see him swimming around and checking up on everyone.

I've had an African Brown Knife for 5 years now. He continues to amaze me. He is definitely the most unique fish in my 55 gallon tank. Be careful that you don't purchase one with small fish in your tank. It will eat anything that it can fit into its mouth. Mine will swim by a smaller fish and open it's mouth, as if he is sizing up the smaller ones.
I will always own a knife. This particular species is the smaller of the group. Perfect for my tank.
Pros: beautiful, hardy
Cons: likes to hide, will eat small fish
