Just bought this yesterday and it's very active in the tank. At first it was hiding under the gravel however since this morning it has done nothing but swimming around the entire tank. It's fun to watch this guy go around the tank. I have a 55 gallon tank and have:
2 Bala Sharks
1 Red Tail Shark
1 Rainbow shark
1 Tiger Barb
They all get along just fine with each other along with this Eel.

Buy it! You won't be sorry.
Very fast and easy to care for.
Mine LOVED walfers! Cute and funny,...
Pretty much anything you want in a fish.
But they do like to hide a lot!
Give ' em some hiding places!
Overall great fish! I would recommend them.

The eels are one of my favorite fish. Plenty of personality, and will eat out of your hand, but... They are ultimately predatory fish. Notice that their eyes are focused forward, not to the sides like most fish. I had one that grew to about 6" or 7" before it began snacking on its tank mates. I know that most fish will eat anything that fits in their mouths, but that's not the case here. My eel was picking off hatchet fish that were way to big to be swallowed. He would capture one, then try to sneak it off into a dark corner to eat it. I was very sad to have to get rid of him, but that was my only alternative.

This fish is great for people who love oddball fish like me. I have one 7-inch eel in a 15 gallon tank with a 3-inch Jack Dempsey cichlid. (you probably think I'm crazy with this idea, but they actually pair up pretty well)
I feed the eel freeze- dried bloodworms.
The only reason i marked the review down one star is because they like to burrow in the gravel. If you plan on wanting to see it every minute of the day, don't get you hopes up. My eel is hilarious, when he burrows, he will pop his head out.

Ive Had My Eel For About 4 Months And He Is Cool. I Have Kept Him In My Tank With My 2 Oscars Who Are Both About 8 Inches Each. When I First Got Him I Was Scared That He Would Not Live With My Oscars And If They Tried To Attack Him What I Would Do With Him. But After The First Month I Was Convinced That They Did Not Even Care About The Eel And I Even Seen All 3 Of Them Huddled Together. After The First Month I Wanted To Get Another Eel But Every Time I Go To The Petstore They Never Have Any.

this fish is so beautiful! it swims gracefully, and it can be hand fed.
it does hide a lot and can escape, though your filter, it either travels up the intake tube, or climbs up through the water flow. make sure the flow is at least 1 inch below water level, i do reccomend putting it with slow moving fish as it will be more active and show it's true personality. Mine is in a 10 gallon tank with a pleco and an angelfish. IT IS NOT true they grow up to 14 inches, that size is based on wild peacock eels, in an aquarium they only grow to 6 inches, remember this! A ten gallon is sufficent, but nothing less! You could also get a ghost tube meant for knife fish, as he will enjoy the long tube of protection. This fish will not eat flakes, or any other food, foods for eels are live earthworms, chopped of course, freeze dried bloodworms, live bloodworms, or frozen bloodworms, they can live off these foods

At sight i wanted this eel,my sister's friend had it so i now knew what it looked like so i wanted it so bad i had to wait a year for this fish. Anyway that was just to start so i got that 18G tank i needed so i have him now now lemme' tell about him,i know the internet says that there timid at first but no they just burrow away. They won't come out when you have it the first couple of days but it will take about 5 to 4 days. I think you shouldn't keep them under 10G so im not saying not to keep them in a 10G,you can,you can, So i want to tell you I have pictures of these fish it's just i cannot do it because I have no time to. The eels, they show up at like the ending of day and will show up when the light is on and also they will scare off the fish when you get one at first like they will all stay far away from him like in the corners of the tank, takes a day to settle I don't have much to say about them it's one fish that you have to get to know. Every night i turn off the lights like at 11:00 i sprinkle some food to make sure he gets some because some of those fish I have are pigs. anyway i have nothing to say anymore so,thats it. So reaserch and get this fish it it AWESOME! they're adorable to!

I loved him!

My eel was awesome, although sometimes hard to find. He seemed to vanish into the gravel in the bottom of the tank for days. I used to worry about him a little bit, but he always showed back up. When he was out and about he was lots of fun to watch. I never had a single problem with him, and he was very mild natured with the other fish. They never bothered him, he never bothered them. He never ate any of the smaller fish either, that I know of. I would recommend this fish. We fed him frozen blood worms, partially because of other inhabitants in the tank. He loved them.

Striped Peacock Eels are not actual eels, but spiny fish, but that's probably the only thing that is not cool about this fish.
Very intelligent, (Mr. Bigglesworth) allows me to hand-feed him earthworms, and plays tricks on me! Make sure the water level in the tank is not level with the filter output, leave a minimum of 1" or else they will escape into the filter; mine gets in the filter when I leave the room and comes back out when I come to see where he is!
Eats pretty much only earthworms (red wrigglers), not aggressive at all, mine won't even eat ghost shrimp!
Enjoys sand over rocky-substrate, needs big rock cave or log to hide in! Overall, great fish!

I LOVE my eel, It may burrow a lot but it's head is always out of the gravel. But they can be very agressive to other eels. I had 2 before and the big always used to attack the smaller one and one day the big one died. (he might have deserved it). But now I have my smaller eel, 2 bala sharks and 2 gouramis and he is perfectly find with them.

I loved this fish. It was so cool to watch it swim around in the tank. Everyday we would try and find him in the tank because you would only see his nose sticking up out of the gravel on the bottom of the tank and the rest of his body would be buried. We also had an dragon ornament that he would hide in for days it seemed...at one point I thought he had died in there...but he then emerged. He was never aggressive towards any of my other fish nor did they pick on him. I had him for about 2 months and then we moved to a new house so I had to drain my 44G tank and put all my fish in containers to transport them...well with being in a rush to get the tank and fish to my new house and get it back set-up I forgot to get the eel out of the tank because he was buried in the gravel and I didn't see him....we moved in Feb when it was really cold and had the tank on a flat bed trailer pulled behind my husband's truck. When we got to the new house I immediately started setting up the tank and found the eel still in the gravel. I thought he had to be dead...with no water and freezing temps for about 20 mins....but NOPE. I hurried and put him in water and he perked right up and lived for another month or so until my crawfish had clipped his back end mulitple times and he died. So do not have a crawfish in the same tank as your eel. I was so sad! That was about 6 months ago and I moved the crawfish to his own tank and I'm going to get another eel this weekend...and can't wait. Super Cool. It's a great addition to your tank.
Pros: beautiful, leisurely, easy care
Cons: hides a lot
