I loved how these leashes looked when I found them in the store. I have two dogs so I bought two. Like other reviewers, after a short period of time my black leash quit retracting quickly and then would retract suddenly and loudly! Just the other night, my pink leash which wasn't acting up AT ALL, would NOT retract for anything. It's just broken. My dog did not over extend the leash or pull hard, it just quit retracting and won't do a darn thing.
These leashes look nice and are comfortable to hold but they DO NOT hold up well. The quit working quickly and are easy to destroy on accident.

The handle is comfortable but you can hardly get your hand into it if you have a fairly large hand and wearing gloves.

I bought this because it was on sale. One of our flexis started fraying after 10 or 15 years. This one looked like it had a nice grip, which it does, but the reel is no good. After two months the reel retracts intermittently, and when it finally does, it is with a LOUD whirring sound that you can hear down the block. Really? What a piece of junk. And I have to mention the lead stop that is a little hard plastic hockey puck that can whack your dog in the head. I will go back and get a flexi.

When I got the Walkabout about 6 weeks ago, I liked it very much. Liked the trigger stop and felt I had good control. But a couple of weeks ago the retracting mechanism became sluggish and now it doesn't retract at all. I thought it was pretty expensive and feel miffed that I have to buy another one. Will get another kind this time.

I origionally have been using the Flexi brand retractable leash, but a lost dog I rescued chewed through it. So, I needed to buy a new leash for my dog.
I decided to try a leash with a better handle and comfort grip. I found this leash and thought it was comfortable and liked that it had the larger hook versus the smaller ones on other leashes.
My dog tends to run at wildlife and I need to control him quickly. However, this leash took forever to retract. I found the release button and stop button (to stop it from extending) became stuck on several occasions. If I needed to stop it from extending in an instant I fear it would get stuck.
I am returning the product. Only had it for a week. :( Disappointed.

We bought this leash a few weeks ago thinking we would save a few dollars, however the button stuck constantly. Other than that annoyance it worked fine, until earlier this week when the leash got stuck with only about 3 feet of leash available. Pay a few more dollars to get a better leash.

I purchased this leash from a PetSmart near my home back in November 2011, for my 33-pound terrier mix. I'd previously used a flat, maybe 4-foot leash, but wanted to give him more room to wander (and keep from tripping over him when I run). The handle is very comfortable in my hand, and the cord retracts very quickly and smoothly, even though I sometimes have to reel him in like a fish if it's retracted all the way. My only complaint is that every now and then, the lock button sticks a little and the cord won't unwind, and I have to push it up a little with my thumb to release it. I'm really surprised by all the negative reviews - I really like mine, and I'm about to purchase a second leash and harness to keep in the car at all times. I hope I don't get a bad one this time.

Bought leash yesterday and it was broken less than a day later. Bought medium size (up to 44 lbs.) even though our dog is only 16 and it got broken. We're using the plain jane leash that we got when we adopted him with no frills and have had no problems. Don't waste your money on this product.

I am on my 3rd Walkabout 16 ft. retractable leash in 5 years. They usually last 16-20 months under rigorous everyday use. I am a trail runner with an 80 lb. Boxer who really pushes the leash to the limit every day. The 1st was large with a wide nylon web leash and worked great, 2nd didn't retract well but worked OK. This new one retracts well and has been great so far.

The leash recoils extremely slow, my dog's legs constantly get wrapped around it. The button keeps getting stuck and sometimes won't retract at all, so definitely do not purchase if you have an active dog or walk your dog close to a street.

DO NOT buy this leash!!

The first leash I purchased began to tear the second time I used it. I couldn't find the receipt so I took it back and exchanged it thinking maybe it was just a random defect. After getting home and opening the new leash I strapped it onto my dog. She walked out about 8 feet and the leash made a screeching noise. When she turned and started walking back the leash did not retract with her. Within two minutes of being opened this leash was useless. I am returning it, this time with the original receipt to get my money back and I will never buy anything made by this brand again.

Leash only lasted two months of gentle use before recoil mechanism quit. Even when it worked it was slow to recoil constantly tripping up the dog. Had another brand that lasted 8 years, thought PetSmart offered better quality than this poorly made item, I'll shop elsewhere.....

I have had this product for less then a month, (3 weeks) and it is already broken. The hook that connects to your pets collar does not latch any more. I was in the middle of walking my dog when it just unlatched and off he went. I live in an apartment complex and it is just unacceptable to have something like this break when it is still brand new. My dog was NOT even pulling on the latch. He was smelling a bush and it just fell off with him 4 ft from me. This is not a good product and is not worth the money. It was the first thing I have bought of this name brand and I was so disappointed, I no longer trust this name brand. And yes, it was for the right weight dog. It was just garbage and hopefully I can get my money back and buy something that works. I am just so thankful that my dog did not make it to motion sensor gates of the apartment before I caught him. I live right next to a highway and if he would have made it to the street who knows what would have happened. Take my warning, do not buy this product!

I bought 3 of these for my American Bulldog and all 3 broke. I thought it was because she is a strong dog, but now I see it broke for many others as well. I payed close to 30 for each one of them, and even the vet says these are unreliable and not a good choice.. Maybe for a little dog,but a large one sees another dog and it snaps. I had to run after my dog. It was scary and humiliating.

This leash lost its ability to retract in less than three months. Luckily, the great folks at Pet Smart credited us for it even without the receipt and we traded up to the Flexi Comfort 3 Large, which, for $12 more, has proven to be a much better value and is made of much better materials.

I've used the medium Petmate Walkabout for about a year now with a 6 year old 50 lb pitbull/sharpei mix that is solid muscle and loves to pull at the leash. He also loves to get a running start when we go for a walk, so he often makes the reel snap as the leash runs all the way out and pulls me forward. Even so, I have had no problems with this leash for a year.
The leash fabric frayed a couple of strands when it got caught on a sharp metal post, but the leash has held up for months after that happened.
I think this is a quality product and it's confusing to see so many bad reviews. I don't think the manufacturer should be blamed for your dog chewing the leash. If they made the first few feet harder material, the retracting mechanism might have problems, or the dog could chew further down the leash and ruin it. My dog chewed through a much thicker non-retracting leash, and I'm sure yours would too. I can see how the reel could break and stop retracting, but like I said, my dog makes the reel snap almost every time we walk, and that's daily, and the reel holds up fine.
Pros: works as advertised, lightweight, durable

Duke doesn't like the leash either!
Inside clicking mechanism sounds like it will fall apart and when it starts to eat your leash tape there's a problem! I tried 2 of these because I thought when it happened the first time it was a fluke but guess what - it wasn't! Same exact thing happened. If tape wasn't perfectly straight it would get jammed and then the inside of it would eat tape or it comes the whole way out and cannot get it to retract back inside like it's supposed to. I liked the way its physically made, ergonomically great and I'm disabled and have problems working things intricately with my fingers but I liked the way I could just let my arm hang down but the buttons are ridiculous! 1 button will stop briefly and 2nd button when the other button is pushed down, at the same time you must press the other and slide it so its 100 percent stopped. Whew! What a mess!
Pros: jams inside and then tears, buttons are difficult to use, eats the leash tape on a daily basis, tried 2 of them same thing happened
Cons: ergonomically made and easy to hold, looks cool
