I've had a Common ball python "java" for almost a year and hes a great snake! there more active when there really young (or maybe its a summer thing? I bought him in june). People say there picky but i find he only rejects the fuzzies i feed him if i give him more then i should, and make sure that if you feed him dead mice that its on a stone, and not the bedding which you don't want him to ingest or reject. I'm 18 and glad my mom has some snake experience to start me out. The temperature for them should be 80-90 but not below, use aspen bedding and day/night lamps are 100 watts, and his first encloser was a 15 gallon and his current is a 29 gallon "high top" . The attached pic is him at 3 months i believe.

Got my BP Rosie september 5 2012, I noticed after purchase that is is blind in one eye. It would've been good to know but it obviously doesn't make me love her any less. I also sexed her, so yeah i know shes a girl! She lived in a 50 gal reptile tank, also i recommend the repti bark for bedding. it holds moisture well. she is 8 months old eating large adult mice.

Its been about a month sense I decided to head off to PetSmart and buy myself a Ball Python. I must say she is one of the best pets I have ever had. She's just over 16 inches right now and still growing. She eats normally, and is extremely friendly when it comes to handling, kind and gentle in nature I would recommend Ball Pythons to almost any starting reptile enthusiast. Oh I must say thank you to the staff at PetSmart for being very helpful when it came to actually getting Solid Snake (name of my Ball Python). I am very pleased with the choice I made. :)

this pet is awesome! My snake is 8 months old. I love my snake it is the best pet in the WORLD!
For people that want this kind of snake I think you should put a black background on 3 sides of the tank because it makes them feel like they are in a cave. Put a small hide in the tank, they like it small . So overall it is the best pet you can buy .I use this site all the time! (In this picture he is getting ready to shed.)

She's so docile and cool/cute! She's never bit me before but she hisses SOMETIMES and when she is shedding she can get a little irritable and try to strike at me, but only because she's scared, itchy, and probably can't see when shedding. It's like waking up your daughter for her to do this: "UGH! No Dad, leave me alone!" *Punch* But she's a sweetheart, easy to take care of once the initial costs are out of the way, and costs extremely little as far as food goes. She's content to just relax in my hand (or around it). I would say they are a beginner snake, but just make sure you are gentle, you give the animal the reigns WITHIN REASON, and give them space when they need it, and love to bond with them. They are very solitary creatures (like me). Try not to stress them out, take good care, study and learn about them, and make sure kids are fully committed and responsible. I'm 17, she's my first exotic snake. Sure she can live 60 years. Sure she can get to 6 feet. But I'm 6 feet and I can live 120+ years. You support children throughout both of your lives: same goes for pets. I recommend this to anyone who is right for them. Parents (especially moms, my mom was hesitant at first too) this animal is perfectly safe and lovable.

I knew Cali was right for me because when we bought her today on black Friday, i was able to hold her at the store. I had no clue but she had one heck of a personality and i accidentally touched her head and she bit my finger. It was hilarious so I just had to get her. Although everything that was required was expensive, it was worth it.

Ball pythons are good pet snakes, not for people just starting out with snakes because of how picky they can be when they eat, but...make sure you're feeding them right. Petsmart told me I was supposed to feed my first ball python pinkies and I had to force feed them to him. That is because he was underweight and he should have been eating rats way bigger!!! Make sure you're doing it right. But anyway, out of all of my snakes, my ball pythons may be one of my favorites.

Coming from someone who used to hate snakes.

My Husband conned me into getting a snake because he wanted one SO bad. The problem was I had a serious phobia of snakes. We went to Petsmart trying to get a King Snake but they were sold out and only had a ball python. I was SKETCHY because to me she was huge even if she was just a baby. We left to go to another Petsmart to find another snake and then we ended up turning around half way to go back and get her. I'm glad we did. She has never struck..the time she did it was an accident and she immediately let go because she knew she made a mistake. She cuddles and plays. When she sheds she stays in a good mood and doesn't get mad and will still eat. They told us ball pythons are hard because they don't eat very well..that has NEVER been a problem. Great pet to have.

This is a great pet!But you will need to buy several things for this awesome reptile!Ball python's shouldn't be handled when you first get one.let him/her get use to it's surroundings.I don't recommend live mice. Pet smart sells frozen mice in the freezer isle witch is usually located by the fish.If you take great care of your snake they will live longer. And oh make sure to always check if the lid to the tank is tightly secure because ball python's are great escape artist

As crazy as it sounds, we live out in the country on 5 1/2 acres of land and we had a bit of a mouse problem in the house. No matter how many traps we set, more appeared. I wanted a snake anyway so I used our mouse problem to convince my wife to let me get one. Well, after 3 months of owning our Lil' guy, we have NO mice in the house at all and we have an awesome pet that will just hang out and watch tv with us or chill in his terrarium. He is by far the easiest pet to take care of that I have ever owned and I recommend one to anyone thinking about it.

i bought a ball python from my local petsmart store, and i have to say i have been extremely happy with him/her! i don't know if it's male or female, but it doesn't matter to me. the snake i got was very healthy looking and a nice overall size. before i bought mojo, i had several corn snakes, but wanted something different. i did plenty of research before getting a ball pythong, which i would recommend anyone do before buying a reptile of any kind. ball pythons are great snakes to own since the are one of the most docile species available to buy and don't have a ton of special needs to take care of them.
a lot of people will say that ball pythons are picky eaters. that isn't always true, but sometimes they can be a bit tricky to feed. when i got mine i was told he was feeding and was being offered frozen fuzzies. i brought him home and let him get adjusted to his new terrarium and offered him food 7 days later according to his feeding schedule and had no problems. he took the food item right away. if you can't get your snake to eat, don't panic...there are a few reasons why it might not be eating. the snake could be getting ready to shed or just be stressed out. i have also learned that snakes might not eat during breeding season. if you can't get the snake to eat, don't try to force it to eat and don't offer food every day either. just keep to your normal feeding schedule and try again. as long as your snake isn't stressed or in shed, then you shouldn't have any problems. otherwise there are other food choices from different mice to gerbils that can be frozen, pre-killed or even live. mine will eat both frozen thawed and pre-killed. i would suggest feeding your python in a seperate tank or container of some sort away from his cage since they can sometimes associate reaching in to pick them up with feeding time and may mistake your hand for food. when feeding them make sure to let them fully swallow the food item and gently move them back into their home. i cover mine with a towel in his feeding container and leave him alone for about 20 minutes or and then check on him to see if he is finished.
ball pythons are nocturnal, so it is important that if you're using any sort of heat lamps for daylight heat/basking to make sure you plenty of hiding places and cover for them to hide out in. it's best to have both a hot side hide and a cold side hide in the terrarium. snakes are cold blooded and if you have one side of the cage as the hot side and the other the cold side, they can regulate their own body temperature just by moving to the other side. it's also a good idea to provide a day/night cycle. there are all kinds of timers out there that will do this for you. there are also all kinds of night lights that provide heat without the snake being able to see the light put out by them. i have a basking light that is on during the day and then shuts off at night at which time the night light turns on as well as the under tank heater that i have placed under the hot side hide. the hot side should be kept around 90 degrees and the cold side around 80 degrees. the night time temperature can be kept a little lower than that, but i would try to keep it above 70 degrees or so.
ball pythons also need a certain amount of humidity. this is important because it will help them shed. if your snake sheds and his old skin comes off in pieces, then there probably isn't enough humidity in the terrarium. there are all sorts of way to fix this from large water dishes for them to soak in to misters and foggers. i have a fogger that i run for about 30 minutes a day and it works great. mojo hasn't shed yet, but so far i don't have problems maintaining humidity with the fogger. just make sure that when using a fogger to not over fog the terrarium and not to direct the fog directly at the snake as it can give them repiratory problems. you can also just mist the terrarium substrate and maintain the humidity by evaporation. and then there are other misting machines out there too that can be used. covering the lid of the terrarrium partially also seems to help hold in humidity and heat. my room is in the basement so it tends to be cooler and dryer than the rest of the house.
all this might sound a little overwhelming, but really it isn't and as long as you can provide these few things for your ball python you'll have a long time together with your pet. i highly recommend getting a ball python to anyone looking for a great long term relatively low maintenace pet. i think they are best kept by families with older kids if you have kids.
