Make sure to get him a friend!!

We have been thinking about getting a new "small pet" for a year now. We had a lovely teddy bear hamster from Petsmart, but he got wet tail and passed away. Hamsters are a little too nervous for our house, so we decided to get a mouse or two. After a hour in the store having a back-and-forth family discussion, we decided mice would probably be too small (and fast) to add to our family, so we decided to get a Dumbo rat (he looked lonely in his cage). After two seconds holding him, I knew he was perfect or us. We took him home, got him settled in and left him alone to get used to his new house. I spent several hours looking up do's and don't's for rat parenting and discovered rats want friends...that having only one rat is like putting him in solitary confinement and can cause alot of psychological issues, as well as medical. We got another rat (also the only one alone in his cage). We took great pains to follow all the helpful hints for introducing non-littermates to each other, shampooing them, putting vanilla on them, putting them in the tub...so no one felt the had to "defend their territory". Anyway, they both got on GREAT, and now our little shy Dumbo Rat is so active and outgoing, he is completely different now that he has a friend. We are incredibly happy with our newest children...now if we could get the cats, dogs and turtle on board...

Rats are amazing little animals. Though sadly they have a really bad reputation, and are often mixed up with there wild relatives. However domestic rats aren't anything like they relatives.
I have had seven rats in almost three years(Sadly two of my girls passed a few months ago :( )
I have five of them now, three were bought at a pet store and two from a gal who bred hers. Most people say that you shouldn't buy from a pet store. In my opinion you should get from a petstore if you are willing to pay for the medical needs most of these rats have. People say you shouldn't because they are sick. But I think you should get one from a pet store because you're saving a life that would normally be snake food. Or live a life in the pet store being ignored. If you can't pay for medical needs (Well if you can't pay for medical needs you shouldn't get a rat at all. But I am talking about the needs from petstore rats, because they generally have more medical needs.) Then try getting one a from a breeder or rescue.
Rats are very fun pets, and worth the cost of them (Because contrary to what most people say, rats do cost a lot. Of corse not as much as a dog or cat or ferret, but no animal is "Cheap". Plan to spend over a hundred for rat supplies and the actual rats. The cage should cost at least $80 unless you bought it used. Rats need at least 2 cubic square feet per rat, plus extra room for toys and hideouts. Then you should get a high quality food which could cost anywhere from $10 to $20. Also you need a lot of toys to keep them busy all together the toys could cost $15 or more.
And you will have to cover the cost of vet care which could cost a lot.)
Rats are very fun and loving. Both the Very hyper females and the generally more lazy males make great pets. Just make sure you do your research :3
I love all my rats very much!
And definitely don't regret buying them!
PS. The my rats are named: Copper, Mable, Tinker, Mavis, and kate :3

Hi there!! I had two rats a few years ago. I bought them at Petsmart. At first I was hesitant but they turned out to be the smartest little creatures I have ever had. I have had many kinds of pets before, but I truly can say rats are the best of all small animals. The only negative thing is that they have a short life span.
Soon I will be ready to get another pair, beautiful and wonderful little pets!!!! I love rats!!

My mom got me a dumbo for christmas I knew he needed a friend so we went to petsmart and I got a fancy rat. THEY GOT ALONG!! Unlike hamsters like if you put a long haired and a short haired they will probably kill each other. But not rats you should get eiether a dumbo or fancy because they are great starter pets.

I love my 2 dumbo rats I gotten at Petsmart. Kyara loves to give kisses like a puppy and Kura loves to borrow in my clothes. I wanted to get a rat after my dogs passed away as we couldn't get another dog. I was going to get a normal fancy rat but once I saw Kyara and Kura's cute ears and outgoing personality I got them and I didnt look back.

We had to move and couldn't take our cat with us. So my mom said we could get a hamster when we got settled in. I looked Up stuff about hamsters, and read that hamsters are very mean, and unsocial. So I was very disappointed, Because I wanted something that I could hold and cuddle, and hamsters WEREN'T what I wanted. So i decided to look on the local humane society website. And there was this Very cute male rat! I decided To Research more About them. I found out that rats were exactly what I wanted!!!! It Didn't take long to convince my mom to get me a rat instead. And Luckily She wasn't scared of them like most moms are. It took a little longer to convince my dad though. Only because he didn't want to have a pet. And Luckily I have two grandma's who LOVES Rats and animals.
For my eleventh birthday My mom bought me two rats. And now I'm almost thirteen and Have owned a total of seven rats in about two years, Five Of the rats I still have now, sadly the two first ones died a month or two ago(Rip!). I am SO HAPPY that I got rats instead of a hamster! Rats are so Fun, Loving, Cute and All the way Around AWESOME. Two of my new girls Are total Kissie Mosters! There names are mavis and kate. The other three are Very hyper and FUN, They love to explore my room! And all my family loves them! You should always get two of the same gender though(Unless you get one of them fixed), Because They are very social pets, and its torture to leave one alone. And you have to get a big cage for them. The All living things Luxury rat pet home, will work for two to four rats, but no smaller. Rats Are AMAZING!!! They are mini dogs! And Have NEVER bitten me!!!
They Are AWESOME for first time pet owners as long as you do your research!
If you are going to get a hamster, DON'T!
Get a rat!!! You will NOT be disappointed!!!!

I got Pixel about 3-4 months ago. I quickly learned that they do need to be in pairs or more. I wasn't there all the time to give her the attention she deserved and so I bought her a companion, Pippa. They are the best of friends and love each other. Both of them are just absolute sweethearts and love to come out and play. I highly recommend any fancy rat as a pet. You won't regret it.
Also, be sure to get a secure cage. Both of my little ratties figured out how to get out. They're little escape artists!
Enjoy your new pets!

Dumbo Rats Make EXCELLENT Companions

I purchased a rather large male dumbo from my local PetSmart, about a week later, after he was appropriately acclimated to our house, I purchased a female Dumbo from a different location. Both of these rats make EXCELLENT pets. I have a 2yr old daughter that can't get enough of them. I purchased the All Living Things® Luxury Rat Pet Home (Item: 4470997) which makes a great home for my little buddies. At this point they have had their first litter of 9 pups, and I'm in week 2 so their eyes should be opening any day now.
I would stay away from the 'fancy' rat species as they do tend to be slightly more prone to biting then the Dumbos.

When my fancy rat Cocoa died, her cagemate was left alone. Our local pet shop sells hand-raised rats, but they didn't have any. So, I decided to check out Petsmart. Inside the glass tank there was an adorable dumbo rat! She had the cutest little face! She would jump up on top of the water bottle when I came close to the cage.
When we picked her up, she seemed a bit scared and freaked out, but after about 7 sec., she was adjusted, and very curious! I fell in love with her, and decided she would be perfect to put with my lonely rat, Bella. And so, I brought her home. The two rats became friends really quickly!
The rats at Petsmart are well taken care of, and loved by the employees. They are very healthy looking, friendly, and quite perky! My little petsmart rat, Pippa, has become quite the affectionate rat.
Pros:
Friendly
Adorable
Steal your heart
Cons:
You will become a rat lover!
There is no disadvantage to having a rat as a pet, and if I were to buy a rat from a petstore, it would be Petsmart.

My experience with rats

Where to start? Not having owned any rodents before, I knew I was diving into something new. Well, I purchased my two dumbo girls about 5 months ago and I haven't looked back once. I purchased them separately, but they get along just fine. They are very low maintenance, and if you litter train them you won't have to change bedding as often as you would have (maybe once a month). Within days, I was able to litter train them (make sure you use a triangular pan, NOT a tupperware...they will not use it) and I also trained one of my girls to spin around when she wants a treat. So cute! For a long time I've been able to leave the cage open knowing they wouldn't escape, but recently in the last month, they've been coming out of the cage and exploring the entire house, not going to the bathroom or chewing on anything, and return home when I call them. When they lick you, it's their way of showing affection. They're actually trying to groom you, like they do with each other (it means you belong). These rats are so spectacular, and you form real bonds with them; they won't ever want to leave you! And vice versa :)

I just got one of guys for my birthday and as a campanion to my other rat, Diva. I have had Diva for over a year now and wanted a friend for her. At first I was afraid about introducing them, because Diva has been by herself for over a year. But it worked out well. My newest edition is Deliah, she's soo sweet and adorable. cutest little thing ever.

I bought a fancy rat August 10, and he such a kind rat :) When he plays, he'll go on me, and climb on both me and my sister, he finds new ways on getting on my bed, and loving! So, yesterday I went back, to give him a friend, cause rats are very social and is cruel if you just getting 1. So I got another fancy rat, from the same tank, and they get along fine :) He blind, but still acts like a rat. I'm still 'taming' him, so he wont get scared every time I pick him up, but if you put him down, he'll run around, and nibble at your toes<3

I was at Petsmart about a month and a half ago, and my boyfriend and I decided to look at the small animals for a change, instead of looking around at all the dog toys (we have a pup). He and I have both had small animals before (gerbils, hamsters, guinea pigs, etc) but neither of us ever had a rat before. My eyes were drawn to a decently large rat, tan and white, with huge ears, a dumbo rat. I had never heard of a dumbo rat, or seen a rat so cute in my life. I had known people who had rats before, and always thought they were fun, but my parents were so against them. We decided to impulse buy him, and I never looked back. I was a tad hesitant the first day or so, because of our pup, but we got him a run around ball, and he and my pup get along alright. Then, a few weeks later, we decided it's time to get Gambit (yes, named after the X-Men) a bigger cage. Just out of curiosity, I look to see if they had any new dumbo rats, since Gambit was the only one in the cage when we got him. We talked to one of the employees and she said that rats do well with others, even males, and we figured since my bf and I can't always be home to play with him, a buddy would keep him from being lonely. So we got a much bigger cage, some more toys, and took him home a new, much smaller, buddy, whom we named Beast (ironic, I know, because of his size xD) At first, Gambit was super territorial, and beat up Beast a little bit, but they quickly grew fond of each other and even sleep cuddled up together sometimes. They are very calm overall, only nibble out of curiosity and aren't very loud at night, which was one of my only concerns, because of my history with gerbils and mice. They love our attention and scurry up the side of the cage when we open the door to come say hello. They are quite active, but also love to take naps. Oh, and they have big personalities too xP I couldn't be happier with these adorable little additions to our family.

I was never a rodent person, though I did own a hamster when I was young and I now currently have two hamsters.
I bought my first two rattie girls at the same time; Panem, a white and black, and Naiad, a cream and white. These two girls stole my heart with how affectionate they are with me and each other, even my chihuahua and cat are in love with playing with my rats!
Since these two girls, I've bought two additional rats; an albino named Lilith, and solid black, Samara. I'm also getting a hairless this week.
I understand how people can see them as dirty, but they are some of the most actively self-cleaning pets I've ever owned. They greet me at the cage when I come into my room, no matter what time. They can be quiet and cute, playful and active. I've never been bitten by my girls. They are some of the best pets I've ever owned and I've owned several different types of animals.
