I bought a young male chinchilla from Clay, NY. I couldn't be anymore happier with him! He's amazing. I was very satisfied with the employee who helped me out with him, she was so good to him along with the other pets. Thank you PETSMART CLAY, NY for providing me with such an amazing pet!

Chins are amazing pets and such a blast to have, but you really need to do your research and make sure you're ready to take on the responsibility of this pet. First and the most important, chinchillas have to be cool!!! If you live in a house where the heat is on all day, or does not stay very well air conditioned, don’t bother with this pet. They can not get above 80 degrees, there fur is so thick that they will have a stroke and die (Imagine wearing a thermal jacket all day long and that’s what its like) , make sure you have a setting that is cool to put your chin in. Chinchillas, are shy animals, they hate loud noises. Make sure you have a space to keep your chinchilla that is away from loud noises; chinchillas will get stressed out of this very easily, and can result in your chin being sick, or losing its fur. They are nocturnal, so remember they sleep during the day. Rest is very important for a chinchilla! Although you might want to hug them, squeeze them and pet them all day long, your chin might not want to be loved on like this. Chinchillas are an animal of prey. You have to work with them to develop a bond first. Don't attempt to hold them and pet them when you first get them. You're first impressions on your new chin will determine the way your chin will act around you forever. When we first brought our chinchilla home, it would run away every time we made a noise and wouldn't come near us. Now, it runs and jumps all over us.. Let him/her approach you in the first few months, and he will start to get comfortable with you. If you have small children, this is not the pet to get. I recommend for age’s maybe...12 or 13 and up. You need to get a big cage, make sure that your chin has enough room to jump, and play. If you have a small cage, your chin will get depressed and stressed out. You cannot wash a chinchilla with water. You have to buy special chinchilla dust for him/her to roll in. This cleans their fur by removing any oils. Remember, although your chin might not want to be picked up, or even pet, he still wants attention. Make sure to give your chin 30 min. to an hour of play time outside the cage, in either the bathroom, or a room that is safe for your chinchilla. *(They can jump up to 6 feet, and get into small places.)* Bonding with your chinchilla is important and will lead to a happy relationship :)

I got my chinchilla Daisey back in February. She's so sweet and soft. She's active in the evening and night which is great for me because she sleeps when I'm at work and awake when I get home. Chinchillas are good pets for people who can devote the time to them. I did my recearch before getting her as should anyone who is considering a new pet.

If you are looking for an animal that is clean (minus the dust baths), non smelly, and easy to take care of - buy a chinchilla. I have had chinchillas for 15-20 years. They are the greatest little creatures in the world. They are not, however, for small children, a child around 12 and up would be okay. They are a lot of responsibility but love you every time you are around them. They are amazingly healthy and get along with all sorts of other pets. Ease of care and cleanliness a double do when it comes to purchasing one of these little fellas!

It was my parents who decided to buy chinchillas. The day before my birthday, we got 2 male chinchillas. I loved to look at them. We let them run around on the floor at home, but I would be scared when they touched me (don't know why)! After a while, I got used to them. I would love lying down and waiting for them to run and jump on me - they'd even get on my face sometimes. My cats didn't pay much attention to them after we first got them. They're easy to clean up after, feed, and keep healthy, but it requires commitment. Unfortunately, after being in the same cage for many years, one of them started to beat up the other, so we separated them. Years later, one of them died - he got sick. But 8 years later, we still have one chinchilla. He's very healthy and happy and sometimes enjoys interacting with our kitten :)

Chinchillas are exotic animals, which means they will need very special care.
It is best to do a lot of research outside of the store (online, talk to breeders, talk to rescues, etc) before buying one.
Most importantly:
*Crepuscular rodents (up at dawn and dusk)
*Need proper chew toys, they chew everything!
*Need proper running wheel (not found in stores) with at least a 15'' running surface.
*Have a sensitive diet and require quality pellets, timothy hay, and NO sugar treats/produce/etc.
*Need a large cage.
*Need an exotic specialist veterinarian
*Need to stay cool and never get wet - they get dust baths
*They are not cuddle animals and do not usually like to be picked up or held.
*Do best alone or in same-gender pairs.
But, they do make WONDERFUL pets if you decide to take one on. They can live to be 20 years old!

If you live in warm regions, make sure you always have a cold marble slab in your fluffy guys cage. These adorable little pets have forty hairs for every hair we have so they get hot fast. Remember to give your chinchilla some time to adapt to his or her new home. Traveling tends to be more stressful for these small animals versus other small animals if they're not use to it. Don't forget to give them a water-free dust bath! :)

Not for everyone

I adopt a chinny (not from Petsmart), and he is just wonderful. They are very clean, they don't smell at all, and are very cute. My chinny is very, VERY shy. He hates being grabbed, but has bonded with me very closely. Most chinnys HATE being grabbed or held at all so if you are looking for something cuddly- try a guinea pig. I love my chinny, but they do need a lot of exercise, and they are really prone to eye infections. I live in an apartment and I can't have dogs or cats-so a clean little chinny was a great choice.
(Children 14 and up is def the right reccomendation!)

Not For All People

Chinchillas are great pets... BUT not for everyone! Chinchillas are very social animals and need a buddy, the least amount of chinchillas you should buy is two unless your going to take it out of its cage twice a day. And that can add up quickly! Chinchillas are not like hamsters, or mice, they need time out of their cage every day, and CANNOT BE PUT IN EXERCISE BALLS which means you need a chinchilla-proof room. Alot of the chinchillas at pet stores are cramped in hot, small tanks. :( (DO N0T HOUSE YOUR CHINCHILLA IN A TANK, THERES NOT ENOUGH VENTILATION) Chinchillas need very large cages with multiple levels which are very expensive! So if your looking for an animal you take out of its cage twice a week and in total does not cost more than 100 dollars, get a hamster, or mouse. if you're still interested in a chinchilla PLEASE do LOTS of research and ADOPT FIRST!!! there are lots of abondoned chinchillas out there :(

I actually adopted my chinchilla from PetSmart 3 years ago because he had a health issue. He has since been 100% healthy with no issues but he is the best small animal I could ask for, I've had everything else under the sun. He's bonded to me so he always greets me when I come home and he loves to be held and scratched under the chin, cheeks, and ears. Would definitely recommend for a more advanced pet and for older children.

I got a chinchilla for christmas and I had never seen a chinchilla in my life. Expecting to get a turtle, I was so surprised and so much happier. Petsmart clearly did an amazing job at raising this little guy. His name is "wobby" I named him after my brother. I really could use the gift card because I really want to get another chinchilla from your store. I love this place. :)

When I was in 3rd grade, my school did a Science Alive thing, where they brought in animals for students to see, ever sense then, I have wanted one. I did quite a few research projects on them, you can safely say, that I love them to death. They are the cutest, softest things. I am waiting for the day when I can finally get one.

I love my Andee. He is the best small animal I have ever owned. I have owned sugar gliders, bunnies, hamsters, and I have to say by far He is the best. I would recommend one to people in apartments, or can't have dogs or cats, etc. They make wonderful companions and they just will love you forever. (:

I have 2 chinchillas Ash, a beige one, that is now 6 months old and Snow a white one, that is 8 months old. Both are male and get along with each other very well. I get them out to play everyday at about 5pm until 8 pm. they are so much fun to watch and play with. If my husband would allow it I would breed them and raise all of them.
