Would not recomend it, September 9, 2009
by Vancouver from WA

Pros: my cats like it., you don't have to touch it for a week.
Cons: exspensive to maintain., the smell is terrible.

"I have two kittens who took to it right away. They like it and I don't have sand everywhere like I did with the littermaid. The smell is terrible every time they use it. I only switched from the littermaid because it broke in five months. The scoopfree is very expensive to maintain, I have to change it every week at 18.00 per week. The tray takes up my garbage can, and can't be great on the landfill."

Can not find refills, August 4, 2009
by Bobert from Ohio

Cons: expensive refills hard to find

"I purchased one of these from my local Pet Smart store.
It says the trays will last up to a month. I get one, maybe two weeks out of a tray.
The problem is finding a replacement tray. My local PetSmart has been out of them for 6 weeks now. I have traveled to 3 other PetSmarts, (and countless other pet stores) and NO ONE has trays for these.
I even called Pet Smart, and they told me they were out and not going to be back in for another month. That’s 10 weeks with the same smelly litter box.
Also with the price of the refills, I may switch to a different type of litter box."

Awful, July 12, 2009

"This box does not work. I had this box set up for a week and the urine was not absorbed by the crystals and the waste collection box grew mold and maggots. I would not suggest this box to anyone!"

Well Worth the Investment, June 23, 2009
by Anonymous from South Florida

Pros: spend much less time cleaning the box!, great for snooty cats.
Cons: initial expense, refills are a little pricy, may take cats a while to get used to it

"After my "teen" cats (brother/sister pair) got over the initial shock of the "scary-new-noise-making litterbox", the whole family has come to love this litter box. I swear, I think those two use the litter box more often just so they can warily watch the machine clean the box now. The refills are a bit expensive, but considering that I only need change the refills about once every two weeks, it's really not that bad."

FIRST TIME USER...HOOKED!, June 4, 2009
by SiameseWrangler from Oklahoma City, ok

"I'm a first time cat owner and my siamese refuses to use her litterbox if it isn't cleaned almost immediately after use. The scoopfree is like a mini motorized miracle! Installation was a snap! I was worried she wouldn't adjust well to the crystals but it even came with instructions on how to help your cat adjust! The motor is a bit louder than expected but after reading raving reviews and now writing one of my own, I wouldn't use any other product! I can go up to a month without switching to another litter pack and she just loves to watch the rake clean her box. Best time saving product ever! Plus it was even on sale at my local Petsmart."

A few problems, May 14, 2009
by Kazatie from Utah

Pros: nice looking, convenient
Cons: bad urine smell, automatic rake stopped working

"We've had this litterbox for a couple years (Yep, it's lasted a long time), and while it's been convenient to not have to change the litter everyday, I do have some negative comments about this box.

After about a year of having it, the automatic part of it quit working, meaning if we wanted to run the rake, you would need to push the button yourself...which is a bad thing if you're going out of town for a few days.

Another problem is that after a few days (about 3), the litter box starts to stink. The urine smell is pretty strong and the old poo smell starts to seep out from the box where it's stored. I think the crystals don't do a very good job of absorbing the urine.

This product was fine, but I wish the box smelled better and didn't need to have the button pushed for it to rake the litter. I'm probably going to get the littermaid next."

Expensive Disappointment, April 26, 2009
by Allaboutcats from Northeast Iowa

Cons: doesn't absorb urine, doesn't control urine odor

"We have four cats and purchased three of these boxes a few months ago. Our cats took to them right away but the crystals become urine-soaked and the odor is overwhelming within two to three days of installing new cartridges. The boxes cycle after use but the crystals never dry out so our cats have to step into saturated litter to use it....very unhealthy. I've tried stirring and adding new, clean crystals but it's a waste of time. The cardboard bottoms of the cartridges also become soaked which gets into our carpet. One cat won't use them after the third day on the new cartridges; she goes on the disposable hospital bed pads we have to purchase and place under and around the boxes. The overall expense of the box purchases, replacement cartridges, additional litter, and now bed pads, has gotten out of control We plan to go back to regular boxes with scoopable, clumping litter. Lots of money wasted."

Scoopfree Litter Box with NON-Crystal Litter, April 9, 2009
by catmamma from Texas

Pros: very quiet, easy to clean, works with non-crystal cat litter, scoopfree has excellent customer service, a bit pricey but well worth the investment
Cons: scoopfree claims only crystal litter will work

"We have tried EVERY cat litter box and cat litter on the market. The automatic Scoopfree litter box is the best, most quiet and easiest to maintain. We have a new large home and 12 cats (all strays that we had spayed and neutered). They wander in and out of the house to our screened-in patio 24/7. Some prefer outside living and others like their special corners and beds inside. For their comfort and convenience we have 3 non-automatic generic litter boxes outside and 3 automatic Scoopfree litter boxes inside. We use World's Best Cat Litter (original form) in our automatic Scoopfree litter boxes and it works perfect. We started by using the crystals - way too expensive and most of our cats didn't like them. We tried WBCL in the Scoopfree boxes and everyone loved the change. There is no smell and very little tracking. Scoopfree hypes the crystals! In the beginning, we ran a test with one automatic Scoopfree litter box with crystal litter and one automatic Scoopfree litter box with WBCL. We waited until the cats made 20 trips to the boxes as calculated on the Scoopfree auto-counter (love this built in feature) and then ended the test. The automatic Scoopfree litter box with the World's Best Cat Litter was used 18 times, making the crystal litter the big loser. Our cats made their preference quite obvious. We also see no difference in how the motor and rake work with the WBCL. We have had our automatic Scoopfree litter boxes for over a year now and they still work perfect. The cost of the crystals litter is outrageous and I still do not believe this type of litter is safe. We can sleep at night knowing World's Best Cat Litter is safer for our cats and the automatic Scoopfree litter boxes are doing a good job. One recommendation ... we tested WBCL for clumping power ... it is best to set your Scoopfree box to rake at 10 or 20 minutes after your cat leaves the box to allow maximum clumping time. Otherwise, at 5 minutes it has a tendency to stick to the rake and will need some manual help to remove it. We also found a perfect plastic tray to replace the cardboard crystal packed trays. If you look at Wal-Mart or a container store you can find them. If not, there are good reports about people who have bought the "Forever Tray" online. In summary, our cats highly recommend the automatic Scoopfree litter box - but not the crystal litter!"

Sara is happy, so I'm happy, March 8, 2009
by Kindred from Sacramento, CA

"I have purchased three other electric litterboxes in the past 10 years and they have all been worth what my cats leave in the box!

Being skeptical, but hopeful I purchased this product. My cat wasn't sure about it at first either. After a little while we both came to the same conclusion, this product not only works it works every time! Sara and I are very happy. I highly recommend this product. If something can please my 19 year old cat, you kitties will be happy too! >^..^<"

MUCH better than LitterMaid, March 7, 2009
by socrfan from Northfield, OH

"After using a LitterMaid I gave it away. Scooping is better than LitterMaid! The ScoopFree is much easier to use and no more mess. The price of the cartridges is high but you can save a lot by buying the permanent tray from Amazon.com and buying bags of crystals. Overall the best litter box I've ever used and my cat had no problem using as soon as I set it up. The company has great customer service and support too. I'd buy it again."

Horrible!!, February 15, 2009
by mamaandjr from Houston,Texas

Cons: costly, poor odor control, messy

"I bought this product after using the littermaid for 5 years. I thought that I could find something easier for 2 cats. My cats not only were apprehensive to using it from the start but stopped covering their waste and started tracking the crystals everywhere. The box was also alot smellier than ever as the waste receptical never closed correctly. One other pretty big con was the cost. For two cats I only got at the most ten days of use at a cost of $15.00 for each tray. I decided to go back to the littermaid."

Excellent Product!, January 9, 2009
by Anonymous from Calgary, AB

Pros: easy to maintain, quiet, dust free

"I decided to replaced my LitterMaid with the ScoopFree after 2 years because it stopped working. I have 1 cat who uses the litter box approximately 6-8 months out of the year.

I have had the ScoopFree for appriximately a year now and have had no problems.

As for the replacing the crystals, if you make an effort to mix up the crystals every week or so, you can have them last for about 45 days.

In stead of replacing the full tray every 45 days, I have found that you can simply empty out the soiled crystals after 45 days or so and replace them with new ones. ScoopFree crystals are not available, but if you can find smaller crystals, they work just fine. Do not use big crystals, they are not compatible with the ScoopFree and may damage the litterbox cleaner. You can do this 1-2 times before having to purchase another tray, which is much cheaper than purchasing a new tray at $18.00+ every month!"

Loved it till it quit, December 8, 2008
by msmuffett from California

Pros: carefree for up to two weeks
Cons: costly refills

"I have had my Scoop Free for over a year. After a few months it quit working automatically. I'm not sure what I did to get it working again. I unplugged it and banged it around a bit and got it to work for several more months. Now it seems to have quit for good. I liked the convenience, but not sure if it is worth the money for another one."

The Greatest Litter Box Ever, November 15, 2008
by LindaO from Northern California

Pros: easy clean-up, litter box always clean, nearly odor free
Cons: litter refills are more expensive but still worth

"This litter box works perfectly, and is well worth every penny! It did not take my kittens too long to take to it, but I did start out with the hood off for about a month.

As the kittens got older I started to notice a bit more of an odor, so I changed the automatic sweep to happen 10 minutes after the cat leaves the box instead of the default. With two cats I do need to change this more often, but it is a quick and easly change.

I would have never have spent this much on a litter box if I did not have to have someone watch my kittens for a few days, but I am very glad I did. One of my best purchases this year!"

Love it, November 5, 2008

"This is the best thing for my cat and myself. If you have a habit of forgetting to clean the litter box or just hate doing it, this is for you. My cat can use it for a month and it's so simple to throw away and then to put a new box in."

Great product but gets expensive, October 22, 2008
by babypees from Miramar Florida

Pros: love the box
Cons: hate the pricey refills

"I have been using the scoopfree for sometime and after reading reviews I think the big drawback is the refill cartriges and their price. I love the box. Works like a champ but I was getting disgusted paying for the refills. I noticed that other reviews would like to see a permanent refill box. I finally found one on the web called Permascoop wihich has made owning this box affordable. I'm just buying the crystal litter to refill the permanent box and I'm saving lots of money."

Not good for multiple cats, October 16, 2008
by Donna1026 from New Jersey

"If you have more than 1 cat, I do not recommend this product. I experienced the same thing as one of the other reviewers -- that it barely lasts 1 week with 2 cats. The cartriges are $15 each. Also, one of my cats urinates in the same corner, and it leaks right through the cardboard onto the floor. I put paper towels underneath to protect the floor. Also, the compartment that holds the feces is very small and does not close correctly, so it ends up smelling pretty bad. This litter box does not have a carbon filter. If it did, it would absorb the odor. Also, it is hard to clean and the rake is not removable and you cannot get it as clean as you would like. I used it for 6 months. I still had my receipt and the box it came in, so I called Scoop Free directly, and they told me to box it up and send back with the receipt. They refunded me the entire amount for the system (not all the $ I spent on the refills. 6 months of refills cost $360). I still use Crystals litter but in a traditional litter box, that has a carbon filter in the hood. Doesn't smell at all."

Love the Scoopfree Litter box!, October 16, 2008
by KarmatheCalico from Chicago, IL

Pros: quick easy and affordable

"This may sound dramatic but, this box changed my owner's lives. No more arguing over who cleans the litter box! For the same price as buying litter and tending to my clean up every other day, they purchase one cartridge on average every 25 to 30 days and change the litter within 5 minutes (needless to say, much much less hassle).
Stays clean, hardly any litter on the floor from me entering/exiting - never any residual "deposits" - only notice an odor when it's time to change cartridge.
They love it, I love it and highly recommend it."

September 28, 2008
by OlliesMom from Porltand, OR

"My husband was adamant about finding an automatic litterbox that worked so we've tried them all. This one we saw at a pet show. The manufacturer told us this one was better because it was designed by cat owners. Here's what I found I didn't like about it.

1. Can't remove the rake for cleaning.
2. Replacement cartridges are WAY overpriced! It CLAIMS that for 2 cats the cartidge would last for up to 14 days. UP TO being the keywords here. I had to replace it once a week. Which worked out to around $60 a month in refills.
3. For being such a big machine, the actual area of litter was kind of small.

Other than that, it was ok. Better than the Littermaid or the Purrforma Auto litterbox."
