Am looking for another brand

We have had this Extreme weather dog door for less than a year in our recently purchased home and installed it in a wall. The insulated part and the outside flap have torn off so all that is left is the inside flap. We made our own dog door at our previous home and it lasted several years with 3 Dobermans running in and out. We have one Doberman now and it's already useless. Have to block it with a chair to hold the cover on and now just have to let the dog out ourselves because its so expensive to replace the whole thing. We used metal screws as well. Would not recommend this door.

Fantastic Idea that Really Works

We always had dog doors for our pets to go in and out as needed but always, when the wind blew or storms would arrive, the standard doors would crack open and let the cold or heat in. Tried rigid doors but could not get the dogs to go through. We decided to try the Extreme Weather door and hope for the best. The best was an understatement. The dogs would go through with ease. When opening and closing the door I noticed that it did not flap out on it's own. Can't wait for the wind or storms to arrive now....
Some reviews concerning installation were eased when I followed the instructions. "Read Before Installation" is true for its words. Following instructions and suggestions worked. Take your time and follow instructions is the best way to go.
I highly recommend this product all the way around.

The weather flaps work well to keep out the cold air and rain. Unfortunately, as other reviewers note: the installation is not easy, the plastic screws (!) are soft and easy to over-torque, the dogs figured out they can just push hard on the "snap on" cover to open it. My biggest complaint is the cover. It is difficult to get it to snap on securely, then you almost have to break it to get it off, unless you push on it from the outside like the dogs, in which case it comes off fairly easily. The cover recently did break, but they charge way more for a replacement cheap piece of plastic than I am willing to pay. If you have cats that also use the door, they may find the stiffer flaps a challenge at first. Ours all still dislike using it as it tends to grab their tails on their way through. If this had a slide in cover like our last one, I would recommend this product - sure wish they made this model with one of those...sigh.

I previously had a PetSafe door that came with the storm door i purchased from Lowe's. It worked great but it allowed heat and cold into my house. I purchased the Extreme Weather door in hopes that it would minimize the heat and cold into my house. So far it is somewhat better and my dogs had no problems coming or going with the extra flaps. However, the Snap-on Cover is useless for preventing the dogs from coming in. The original PetSafe door I had came with a cover that slid into slots and was secure. My dogs took 5 seconds to figure out they could just push in on the Snap-On Cover and come back into the house. I wish the cover was something that slid into slots so it would be more secure. I also had to modify the door plastic inserts as my storm door was much narrower than what was listed as the minimium to use with these plastic inserts. As mentioned in other reviews, the plastic screws are easily stripped so be careful.

Just installed over the weekend so its hard to recommend to a friend as of yet, since the dog hasnt had a chance to try. Let me first say that of the choices to use for an access door are not great, its either a 2 inch thick door or a wall unit thats between 4 and 7 inches thick. I needed one for a garage wall which is approx 1.25 inches thick with alum siding. Whichever one I chose I knew I would need to modify. I was ok with that. The problem was the installation of the two frames and the spacers. The spacers, 4 total, kept falling out of their grooves when you put the door in the correct postion. You have to keep them right or the plastic screw wont go all the way through to the other side. The frame itself could be made wider, there is only about a half inch left all the way around the access hole. It took two of us 4.5 hours to install this door. I, by myself put together an elliptical machine in less than 2 hours. The price seems high for what you get, two plastic frames, three flaps and ten plastic screws (screws being plastic to accomodate the different thicknesses of doors). The only thing I could not make easily from scratch would be the flaps themselves. I was almost to the point of throwing it away and doing exactly that.

I have several large medium and small dogs that have used this door. The plastic snap on door is not made strongly. The plastic on the side of the door that holds the door into place to close it broke on one side within a month. The doggie door I had prior lasted 8 years. I could not find the same door with the slide down door which was much tougher. Dogs can push the door on Petsafe in and out.

This dog door was a gift from my parents, so I won't comment on price. We were replacing a smaller dog door, so we thought it would be pretty easy to just enlarge the opening and put this door in. Unfortunately, the "Extreme Weather" door was a huge pain to install, the main issue being the cheap plastic screws that are used to attach the two outer portions of the door. In addition, rather than having a track into which the door cover slides, this ones just kind of snaps (poorly) onto the inside portion of the frame. When we got up this morning, the door cover was laying on the floor under the door. Also, because it doesn't let any light through when the cover is off, my dogs think it's still closed and are afraid to use it.

Installed this dog door a few days ago and it was put to a test
today and passed with flying colors. We have had heavy rain
and strong winds all day and this dog door kept the wind and
the rain out. Will buy another.

This was my first dog door. It was a little tricky to install, however, it was installed in mid-January in the upper midwest. My dog loves it. It does a great job of keeping the cold out. My only complaint is I wish there was a dog door made for dogs between 45-65 pounds. I bought the medium sized door which is for dogs up to 40lbs. My springer spaniel barely fits through it (he weighs 42lbs) but I didn't want to buy the door that is made for dogs up to 100lbs. That would be too big for him. Overall, it's a good door.
Pros: keeps the cold out

Great idea, unfortunately not well made. Our Shepherd puppy (18 months) has torn it up in less than 30 days! We bought this and had someone help install it. The difficulty level was somewhat more difficult than we had experienced with other PetSafe doors (in the door). I have pictures of the damage the dog did just going in and out within the last 3 weeks, since we installed it.

We had no problems installing this door. It worked great except in very high wind-we had to place something behind the door to stop the wind from blowing the flaps open. And it worked just fine until a visiting dog tried to tear it off and we
had to replace the door. And we replace it with the same door.

Came home the other day to find one of my dog doors broken, so I had to buy one in a pinch and this was it. I've installed several pet doors before and this one was the biggest pain. Assembly looked easy, boy was I wrong! You have to cut all four inserts to fit your door thickness, no big deal, but, oddly enough, you have to cut the long ones too because they are too long to fit inside of the pet door, which is a fixed length. They fit into slots inside of the pet door frame, but they don't meet up at the bottom, leaving a 1/4" gap at the bottom of both corners for the water to enter INSIDE of your door. If your door is hollow inside, it's possible for it to fill up with water under the right circumstances. Installing the pet door is another excercise in futility. If you take your door off the hinges, it might be a little easier. Also, it would help to have an extra set of hands to help hold things while you put it all together. It's hard for one person to hold the pet door pieces together and get all four inserts to go into their slots on both halves at the same time, all while installing the screws. Now for the biggest disappointment, PLASTIC SCREWS hold this thing together!!! Or I should say, are "supposed" to hold it toghther. I twisted the first two screw heads off just trying to get them tight enough to hold the pet door from falling on the ground. These screws are skinnier than a drinking straw, very flimsy. I would recommend a trip to the hardware store for metal screws, but for a pet door of $130, it's a shame to use cheap stuff like this. I could not tighten the screws enough to keep the pet door from sliding down out of place under its own weight without risking destroying the plastic screws. I had a tube of liquid nails I used to glue the pet door in place. After finally getting it installed, I had to retrain the dogs to use it because the center flap is yellow instead of clear like the old door, so they thought they couldn't go through it. I will give credit where due. The door has three flaps instead of one, so it does stay put better than the old one in the wind. Maybe if the cost was about half, I could overlook these issues, but even my $50 door had metal screws... I hope this helps.
