Tried many, but this was the one that worked., March 11, 2010
by Tommy from Eugene, OR

Pros: lasts forever
Cons: somewhat challenging to learn how to put it on

"I adopted an adult lab five years or so ago. He's blind so I didn't want just a collar since I see our walks as his equivalent to a romp in the backyard so I wanted to balance my control with his freedom. We tried many but found this to be the one that provided the right balance when walking my 100#, confident blind boy.

Only sort of negative is that it is a little challenging to learn how to put it on, but it's worth the effort!"

Great until it breaks, December 18, 2009
by Swampbunny from Mobile

"This works great on a retriever who pulls forward and a half-bassett who braces against walking and tries to get the harness to pull off over her head. However, after a month, the plastic gizmo that controls the tension breaks. I would love to have one of these that does not break!"

Instant Success!, December 7, 2009
by LuvMyPits29 from Cleveland, OH

"I have an 8 year old 85 pound pit mix and a 1 year old 75 pound pure bred pit...I weight 110 pounds and would have to walk my 2 dogs seperately because they were both major pullers even my neighbors would notice and say, "Looks like he/she's taking you for a walk today!" So after trying every trick in the book and different types of collars, I have FINALLY found something that works! It doesn't completely stop them from pulling but it made a HUGE difference, I feel like I actually have some control now. Definitely worth buying! I just bought this so I haven't had any issues with it breaking like other reviewers have said, but if the clip breaks, couldn't you just replace it with another one? I always see those kinds of clips on sweatshirts or jackets! That's what I'm going to do if mine breaks! :)"

"I have a 25 lb boston terrier that will not stop pulling! I bought this item thinking it would be the solution to my problem but it was not it worked for a little while but i think that was just because it was something new she is a very strong girl and does not stop pulling! i think my next option is a choke chain"

Love to go on walks now!, October 11, 2009
by Pyper from Seattle, WA

"We have a 1 1/2 year old, 81 pound Saint Bernard/Great Pyrenees mix. She thinks she is much smaller than she is and has tons of puppy energy. When taking her out on walks she tries to lunge after dogs and take off after squirrels. We had tried a choke collar before, but even with the right placement on the neck it was not working. Instead of understanding to stop pulling when it tightens she would choke herself to the point of hacking and try to rip our arms out of their sockets. I was hesitant to use a harness on our big dog but had read really good reviews about this harness. So we gave it a shot.

After our first walk I noticed such a difference. Obviously it does not eliminate pulling altogether, but it definitely gives us much more control over her pulling. When she starts to pull I just give a tug and that seems to be enough. I had much more control when she saw other dogs and after trying to lunge after the first one we saw on our first walk she didn't try it again. Walks are definitely more enjoyable now knowing that I don't have to worry about losing an arm or having her choke herself to death.

As long as you aren't expecting some miracle harness that eliminates ALL pulling, I would definitely recommend this harness."

Great Fit, Great Control, Bad Cord Lock, June 27, 2009
by UncleBen from California

"As another reviewer pointed out, the plastic cord lock is poorly made. It recently busted through and we're left with a harness which won't tighten. But when it worked, it worked great for our 80lb lab who pulled a lot (before the harness)."

Be careful, breaks easily., May 27, 2009
by Mel8483 from Danvers, MA

Pros: prevents choking
Cons: breaks easily, doesn't prevent pulling

"I bought this and at first I loved it. Our beagle pulls, and while this didn't really put an end to it, it did slow her down a little bit. Anyway, the reason I really bought it is because when she pulled with a regular harness, she would choke herself since it rested right at her throat. This harness completely stopped that. I was elated. However, only about a month after purchasing, I noticed that the little clip that is used to tighten the harness and keep it snug wasn't staying down. After examining, I noticed that on the opposite side of the button, the clip had a hole. I returned it to Petsmart for a store credit, since they didn't have any at the time. Fast forward to today, I went to a different Petsmart where they had one left in the size I needed. Before I purchased it, I checked inside the package to make sure it was the right one, and Sure enough, the clip did the same thing on this one. It must've been returned and put back on the floor. Long story short, the spring inside the clip is too strong for the plastic and after enough pushing against it, the plastic gives way and snaps open. Too bad I didn't check with Sporn first as they guarantee this product FOR LIFE. I wouldn't recommend it though, even with the guarantee, because, in reality, who wants to go through all that?"

The best I've tried so far, May 4, 2009
by denvermama from Denver, CO

"We rescued an 80 lb lab/shepherd mix and he was never leash trained so he pulled and when he did, it about yanked my arm out of my socket! We tried a gentle leader but he absolutely freaked about having the thing around his muzzle. It made him pull even more to try and get out of it. So we tried the Sporn halter after a girl at our store recomended it. It doesn't completely stop his pulling, so I gave it 4 stars. But it is much easier for me to control him and he doesn't pull anywhere near as hard. He listens to me when I tell him to heel and sit because he's not so distracted by a noose around his muzzle. I like that it is is plain black- my dog is black so it's invisible on him. I think it's very easy to get on him and would recomend it if you've tried other stuff and they still pull."

FANTASTIC!, April 24, 2009
by MKep from NC

Pros: actually works!!

"I have a 3-year-old male boxer and I have NEVER been able to take him on long walks of any kind because of his pulling. However, today I purchased this harness and the difference is incredible! I first tested him with it in our backyard, just to see if the harness would have any effect at all. He was right with me the whole time. So then, I decided to try walking him at the park. He has NEVER been able to walk through the park. Way too many distractions. However, this time, he was right with me the ENTIRE time. I even walked him through a playground full of children and their parents (he loves people). He didn't flinch. Right with me the whole time."

dog doesnt drag me around anymore..., April 8, 2009
by ellieNC from Fuquay, NC

"I got this for my 15lb minpin who likes to drag me all over the place. When he sees a bird or squirrel, he takes off and I've had my shoulder pop quite a few times. With this harness, he still pulls, but no where near as hard. When he does pull, it does not move me or effect me at all, it pulls on him. I give it 3 stars because while it does save me from being dragged around, it didn't stop his pulling."

Sporn Mesh vs: Gentle Leader, March 20, 2009
by canadianeh from Huntersville, NC

Pros: well built sturdy
Cons: can only get black from petsmart no red or blue

"I bought one Sporn Mesh and one Gentle Leader for our two 5 month old 60lb black lab pups yesterday after walking them became a burden.

When walking them today for the first time on both halters the Sporn Mesh came out ahead for us. Molly who had the Sporn on caught on quickly and finished her walk glued to my side looking up constantly for direction with no pulling, crossing in front or back, getting tangled in her sisters leash etc.. Lilly who had on the Gentle Lead was more controlable but would pull back against it, rub her nose on the cement, try to shake, claw it off, it may work with more time but we are going to exhange it for another Sporn Mesh halter

* both were the Large/XL size
** you really need to keep the Sporn on the short leash for it to work well, like right by your side.
*** the Gentle Leader has a little plastic clip that seems really liable to break"

Where have you been all my life?, March 15, 2009
by BayouButterfly from Belton, MO

"I wish I had found this product years ago when I adopted my dog from the shelter. She halfway knows how to heel, but it still makes walking unpleasurable, until NOW!! This harness is an instant "heel" mechanism. Jessie doesn't try to smell things anymore, nor does she try to potty everywhere. Walking her doesn't make her choke anymore because there's nothing pulling her neck. She walks next to me at my pace now and walking is very pleasurable. My 6-year-old niece will now be able to walk Jessie without getting pulled and falling down. I wish I knew about this product 5 years ago when I adopted her!! Thank you, Sporn, for this amazing product!!!!"

Does what it says it does, November 18, 2008
by Rablack from Chattanooga

Pros: fits the dog comfortably, makes walking the dog a breeze

"My wife and I have a 6 month old Siberian husky. As you can believe, she is one heck of a puller. She was getting to the point where she could would drag my wife around the yard. I started looking for a harness that might help. I read a lot of praise on this particular harness and about how amazing it was. I was a little skeptical. Everyone was mentioning how their dog stopped pulling as soon as they put it on. So we bought one and tried it. It is very impressive. Our dog has vitually stopped pulling all together. Every once and a while she pulls a little bit when she sees a cat or something, but with nowhere near the strength that she used to. Great product. If it works for a pulling dog, it can work on any dog."

Non Pulling???, October 26, 2008
by KirbysMom from Tuxedo NY

Pros: easy of use seems to be comfortable for dog, inexpensive
Cons: doesn't stop dog from pulling

"I have always used the Puppia harness for my Shih Tzu but he pulls so hard that he's hurting his throat since the Puppia fits high on the chest.
I was thrilled to find this non pulling harness, thinking it was the answer to my desire to walk and not be dragged by a 17 lbs dog.
Our first foray, coming out the door...Kirby saw a jogger and dragged me down the steps. It hasn't curtailed his pulling one iota.
Non pulling my foot.
It's a nice halter, easy to use, seems to be good quality, but non pulling? Not so much."

Amazing Product, September 9, 2008
by DavidS from Dallas, TX

"I bought this for my 3 year old Border Collie who while very intelligent, due to his stubbornness and sketchy impulse control was difficult to walk. It was a constant battle with him pulling and me pulling him back and him stopping and going out of the way to investigate every scent. After trying to take him for a walk Sunday night I decided I had enough and had to get him a harness because the pulling with the collar was just not humane imo. I also didn't want a halti type product that goes around the head. I bought this and put it on him last night and within about 50 feet he got the idea. I'm not sure how this works over getting pulled back by the neck but when he would try to pull ahead or go off to the side the harness would tighten around him a little and he got the idea quickly and stopped trying to pull. Amazing product! Now we can actually go for walks without having a fight over who wants to go where. I would recommend this to anyone with a dog that doesn't always stay at the heal position.
As far as the first review with the dog that can get out of it, try the adjustments. I don't see any way a dog could get this off if adjusted snugly as the instructions suggest."

min-pin slips the leash, August 27, 2008
by barkalot from Middletown, NJ

"I would not recommend this leash to anyone. My dog Radar, not the brightest bulb in the lamp section, has devised three ways to slip it. Standing and backing out, kneeling and backing out, and twisting his head while standing, and backing out.
The leash gets loose if you have to rein your dog in, and that's what gives the dog latitude.
It may be good when it's new, but Katy bar the door once it's used a few times!!!"

It's a Miracle, August 18, 2008
by em63 from Missouri

"This halter is a miracle! As soon as we put it on I looked at my fiance and said, we have a good dog now! We have an Australian Shepherd mix, and it was almost impossible to walk him on a leash in public, he practically pulled my arm off, now it's an enjoyable experience to take him for a walk. I am so glad we finally bought this. It allows me to control him at all times, even when he takes off running after a squirrel etc. It makes a world of difference!"

Harness attached to Coupler

"My wife reviewed this product earlier and did not add the pictures. I am adding them to my review. One picture is of Xia wearing the harness and her regular collar. The other picture is with the leash/douple coupler attached for safety. The hooks are adjusted so the harness can be effective when she pulls. However, the collar is loosely attached as added security in case Xia broke the hook or the harness. She has problems with suddenly going after game on walks and has actually straightened a hook on the leash.
I tried the older model of the Sporn Harness on Kai, my rescue shar pei. He did not like the collar part. This new model, however, is very comfortable and effective."

Sporn Non-Pulling Mesh Control Harness, August 4, 2008
by khills from Tupelo, Mississippi

"This harness is great! I have a strong-willed muscular shar pei rescue, Xia, who actually turned my heavy chair over when she suddenly went after a dog. She also straightened out the hook that attaches the leash to her collar when she went after a rabbit. The first harness that I found that allowed me to control her sudden bursts of speed without choking her gave me a bad scare when she backed out of it going after a cat at the Mall. Then, I tried this Sporn Mesh Control Harness and was delighted. It was lighter, and Xia is not able to back out of it. She doesn't seem to notice she is even wearing a harness. It is lightweight and comfortable due to the mesh chest piece and the little sleeve covers. I bought a nylon leash with a double coupler on it for safety in case she ever suddenly straightened out another hook. I fasten the short side to the harness and the longer side of the coupler to her collar as a safety strap. I can actually attach her leash to my belt now and enjoy jogging without worrying about her suddenly taking off after some 4 legged creature that comes into her line of vision. Xia is careful to stay at my pace now, and she never pulls on me. It is the most comfortable harness I have found as well as the most effective. I will not be without this harness anytime I am away from our property--for both the safety and comfort of my errant girl! (Yes, she has been to obedience training. Any Shar Pei Mom would understand...)"
