ASTOUNDING!!!

I have tried EVERY automatic litter box on the market today, including the whole Puurforma system, only to end up with a horrible smelling and difficult to clean up mess with each of them, most especially Litter Maid (altho' I must admit I bought a 2nd, when my first one's motor died, thinking it was the best available...anyone want a slightly used Litter Maid or Puurforma??). Even with the special extended waste tray for the Litter Maid and cheap, disposable bags instead of the plastic bins, they are still disgusting messes.
Then, I saw this ScoopFree online and after many soul-searching hours, decided to give it a try...
1) Set Up could not have been any easier. Smell of crystals was a bit much when I first emptied the bag they came in, but that quickly resolved itself. I bought the privacy hood and that also slipped on with no problem.
2)I barely set the thing down (depositing 2 small clumps of "solids" from the previous box as the instructions suggested) and my 11 month old was in the box.....USING IT!! So much for my concern that they might not take to the crystals...:-)
3) Being used to scooping out two separate boxes for the 11 and 16 month old Ragdolls at least twice a day, I watched, occassionally unable to resist pushing the button myself to be sure it was actually working.
4) There was NO smell! Occassional TINY bits of feces slipped past the rake, but they dehyradrated and did not smell at all. Weird! I must admit I did use a scoop to try and catch those 2 little things when they occured, but I didn't need to. I was just amazed at how I was doing NOTHING and everyone was happy!
5) You have to understand that this litter box (which HAD been TWO with clumping clay litter) was in our bedroom. Our bathrooms are not very big and we kept the younger cats upstairs, so our 9 year old orange Tabby didn't have to "share".
6) I could sleep through WWIII, but my husband is a very light sleeper. NEVER has this ScoopFree woken either one of us. Not once! Not the odor, or the motor! By day 7, I removed the single older litterbox I had kept in the dining room of the house in case of emergencies, as it was obvious they were not going to need it. I had not cleaned it (as the instructions had also suggested), but it was barely used.
7) After 18 days and TWO very busy cats (that I was cleaning 2 boxes twice a day for a year prior to the arrival of the ScoopFree), I sort of noticed a little odor. I figured that anything past 14 days was gravy and changed the "cartridge".
8) This process was every bit as easy as the instructions read. I tipped the unit up on end, slid out the used cartridge (which could have probably goine another week, but I was curious to see how full it was), slipped the cover back out from under it and taped it over the box. Slid in a new box and VOILA! Everything was done!
9) No muss, no fuss, no anything! Yes, the cartridges are a bit pricey, but if you get them on Free Shipping days, it's no where near as bad as the pounds of expensive clumping litter and your time spent cleaning yourself and the whole area up afterwards so very often. We had very little problems with the crystals coming out of the box, and that's with 2 cats with VERY furry pawpads!
10) I honestly feel we can leave town for a few days and no longer have to bother a neighbor to scoop after our cats - something I hate to ask of anyone. And now I am downright thrilled with the extra time I have each day! Hey, that 1/2 hour can be much better spent doing almost anything!
11) The final test will be coming soon. Having had such success with the younger cats, I have just now ordered a second system for our older cat. Getting him used to the change in litter might be a little more difficult, but at least when he urinates in the very back of the box (on the rake in all the automatic systems) it won't cause the horrible mess you get several times a day when the clay litter clumps all over the rake. That disgusting bit alone will be worth a little training, which I doubt he will even need!
I have NEVER given such a long and positive feedback on any item in my life and I have reccommended this ScoopFree system to every friend who has cats and even a few friends who have small dogs trained to use littler boxes! I have no idea what could have gone wrong with the person who left their ratings before me, but I would swear by this
system for anyone who can possibly swing a couple of extra dollars per month in exchange for never really dealing directly with cat waste again!
It's well worth every penny, if you ask me!

This is an update to my previous review. I returned the litter box last week. A BIG thanks to Petsmart for allowing the return!!!!
The odour problem continued to be an issue and I had to continue to replace the litter every week. Way too expensive.
So I DO NOT recommend this product.

Works great but a few issues

I have 2 cats - both 1 year old. I just bought Scoop Free 4 weeks ago. It works great. BUT there's no way the litter lasts 2 weeks for 2 cats (which it says in the instructions). It's just the smell that prevents that from happening. I have 3 odour control containers right beside the box and even that doesn't help. Putting a lid on it won't help because the cats will come out stinking like litter (been there done that with previous cats and regular litter boxes).
So I have to replace the litter every week. BUT it's quite expensive. If they would cut the price of the litter in half, it would be fine and they would find that more people would buy the box and thus wouldn't lose much in the way of profits.
One of the cats is a 'digger' but she hasn't wrecked the bottom of the box at all and it has never been saturated with urine. No issues there.
I just changed my cats' catfood today to a 'stool odour control' type of food. So we'll see how that goes. Maybe that will reduce the smell and enable the box to last 2 weeks. I'll update this in a couple of weeks and let you know.
Also, one other issue with this is - there's only one store that carries the litter refills and it seems they're out-of-stock more than they're in-stock. So you have to buy a few at once, just in case.
I like the convenience of the box. I just check it once every couple of days and don't do a thing to it. The rake is sturdy and the whole box is quite a simple setup. It runs quiet and isn't overly large.

After we found out that my wife and I were expecting, I decided that I was going to find an alternative way to cleaning the litter box. We purchased this at our local PetSmart and thought it would work great considering the fairly decent reviews. Initially it worked wonders, no smell at all. Plus, since it was in the only bathroom, it was nice to no longer see or scoop cat feces. Unfortunately after the first tray, each tray does not mask the odor that well. Walking in through the front door you can tell there is a cat box in our home. Additionally it does not last thirty days, more like fifteen days. Maybe changing food will help with both smell as well as the amount of waste. I don't think one cat would cut the change time in half, not that I expect to get thirty days use from a tray of litter. I'd be happy with three weeks. Three stars, probably works and works works well, but not the best litter box out there.

Great Product!

I have 6 cats and always struggle to find a good litter box system. I have 1 Scoop Free litter box (among others) and just ordered another. 2 of my cats are still afraid of it after 2 months but the others prefer using this one! The rake waits 20 minutes after the cats have used it. They are faciniated with its quiet motor. The refills are expensive, however, you can dump the tray and fill with crystal litter in between. 1 tray lasts about 10-14 days for me but 4 cats are using it!

After trying all kinds of litter boxes and different brands of litter, a friend recommended this product to me -- because she used it for her cats. I did not believe the claims made, but decided to give it a try. What a wonderful surprise! It works exactly as described. I never have to touch litter any more. Almost no odor. Drys out waste far faster than I had expected. Simple and easy to use. My first cartridge lasted my cat 22 days...and he is a heavy user! This product is not cheap; but, to me, it is worth the cost by not having to worry about my cat having a good place to do his stuff. And, I no more have to touch the stuff. Fabulous. Buy it!

The product was perfect for the first 45 day then even though it was new trays almost every two weeks, the odor was terrible! Much worse than any other method I have used. Very, very expensive and the smell was terrible!

We bought 2 of these automatic litter boxes and were very happy with the product. Recently the company changed the litter cartridges from sturdy boxes to flimsy boxes that leak and charge the same amount for an inferior product. I am either going to switch to another brand or back to the old way all together.
Pros: none anymore
Cons: inferior products

I have 3 cats so it's important to have clean litter boxes. I have 3 regular litter boxes which are 100% cleaner than this waste of money. It leaves fecal materal on the rake part and does not get rid of the crystal litter that has been urinated on. It is easier to keep and clean regular litter boxes. I wish I never purchased this product, and I hope nobody else does either after they read this review. This is the first time I have EVER given such a negative review for ANYTHING!!!!!!!! If I could find my receipt I'd return it.
Pros: none whatsoever.
Cons: filthy and dirty. worse than cleaning regular box., expensive, poor constuction., smells

Everything about this automatic litter system is great!! My husband loves this box the best despite the high cost of having to replace the litter itself (approximmately 18.99 per tray)
We have two siamese cats which absolutely love using this !! I'm so happy to have found this product after trying LitterMaid, etc.
One con's of this product is -- its hard finding the cartidges as almost all PetSmarts' are OUT of them so I end up buying three of them all at once)
Simply spoken, this product absolutely works GREAT. (I bought this product at a sale price thankfully at 79 dollars)
Pros: easy and wonderful!!
Cons: hard to find cartidges

This was a most useless product. Feces gets caught in the sieve, requiring extensive cleaning. Urine often seeps through the cardboard box. It is not easy or friendly and the replacement box system seems like a lot of extra waste to generate. Definitely did not make my life easier. The refill trays are not cheap either. I'll stick to the old litter box system, thanks.

Expensive by Easy to Use

The refills are expensive, but this litter box has been so easy to use and quick to refill. I have 2 cats and I only have to change the refills about once every 2 weeks. I have not had problems with leaks that other reviewers have complained about. And, I find that the smell is better than with most litter boxes I have used. The only problem I have had is that one of my cats was scared of it for the first week and wasn't using it. She has since become accustomed to it, and there have not been any other incidents.
Pros: ease of use
Cons: expensive

My boyfriend has had this litterbox for a few months and he really loves it. His cat is well known for not covering his "business" and the litterbox is in a very open area.. right in the middle of the loft. You wouldn't even know it was there except for the spilled crystals!
Like any litterbox, the litter is going to get out. Can you walk off the beach without sand on your feet?
I just purchased it for my own 3 cats today. So far, so good.
HOWEVER!! Check the in-store sales first! While ordering online is easy, it's currently on sale with a Pet Perks card for $79.99. I'd rather take the time to go to the store and save $50!

I have to say that mine and my cat's lives have been improved drasticly since I purchased this about 5 weeks ago.
We no longer have to smell the oder or scoop the litter.
I have only the one indoor cat and the cartridge lasted for 30 days.
There was no training involved for my cat she started using it right away. Yesterday I heard the rake going and then heard her meow, so I went in to check on her and she was just enjoying the show.
I would highly recomend this product, and may even give it as a gift to a friend.
Pros: no oder, lasted 30 days - no scooping, easy clean-up and reload

I have this litterpan and like it with the exception that the carboard dry does get soggy. The refill trays are very expensive. I try to stretch them by completing emptying them and refilling. I would like to see the cartridge be a plastic tray that was refillable. This would be especially helpful with multiple cat households.

How to improve on a good litter box design.

Compared to the Littermaid and the Purrforma Plus, the Scoop Free litter box is far superior, but flawed. All of the 1 star ratings have the same complaints, crystals get smelly, leaky and very expensive.
I own 3 cats and have made some changes to make the Scoop Free convenient and inexpensive to use.
1) Purchase a flat non-stick cookie sheet 14"Wide x 17"L (up to 22"L) and line the bottom of the litter tray with it. Use tin snips to trim off handles and things that could interfere with the litter rake. Discard the cardboard lid that comes with the litter cartridge instead of putting it under the box.
2) Cut slots in the litter trap lid so that you can easily pull it open without lifting up the box.
3) Fill the box with standard clumping litter (premium--dust free, not crystals).
Now the box will not smell and will maintain itself between uses throughout the day and your cat(s) will be very happy.
You can lift up the lid on the litter trap and scoop it out only once a day and you will be happy. (I place a newspaper section on top of the litter and scoop onto it, fold it up and discard it.)
So its no longer a Scoop Free but it's now a Scoop-Once-a Day (or even less if you have only 1 cat). Very convenient and cheap.
Recommendation: you should always put something on the floor under the box to catch overspills that are the norm with all litter boxes.
Best system I've had in a lifetime of cat lovin'. Maybe they should manufacturer some this way to get rid of those 1 star ratings.
Pros: best of the systems commonly available.
Cons: needs minor modification to become more efficient.

The concept for this box is good but the crystal litter holds the urine smell like you wouldn't believe. We have two cats and after only one day I couldn't stand the smell in our bathroom. One of the cats couldn't either because he started going elsewhere. The poo doesn't smell at all, that part of the system works but if you have more than one cat, expect to change the cartridge every 3 days. I call that very expensive and stinky.
