My dog Jr has been on this food since he was a puppy (7 weeks old). Now he is 8 months old. I will give him this food until he turns a year. When he turns a year; I will not give him dog chow; I will give him Purina One. This food has not made him sick, or anything. He is just one healthy 8 pound mix Chihuahua. (Who still thinks he is a little baby, but thats ok he does not need to know that) :)

I use Puppy chow for my 6 puppies, they are almost 6 weeks but i started them at 3 1/2 weeks old. i grounded it up in a blender with water until 5 weeks,at 5 weeks thy have their milk teeth so i put some on a plate then just put water over it and let it set for a minute, and they loved it!!

My dog doesn't like it

We had a 4 1/2 month old puppy a few weeks back, and she refused to eat it! I had to put a tiny amount of garlic and turkey for her to eat it and she still ate around the food. Plus, it was a bit too hard on her teeth. I could hear them grinding and trying to eat the food. But she was very energetic, had no health problems, and her coat was as shiny and clean as a whistle.

When I got this dog when it was about 6 weeks old. She ate this since then and still does! She never had problem eating or pooping it out. She loves the food and we still give her the food and she is about 6 months old now! She is a German Shepard and golden retriever mix and she has clean eyes, clean coat, and never had problems with her food. She LOVES the FOOD!!!!

I started feeding this to my puppy, who is a black lab/pit bull mix, when I first adopted her. She was only 8 weeks old and didn't seem to have any medical problems. I fed her this for about 2 weeks and then she started having really bad gas and a very dry coat. I took her to my vet to see what was wrong because she always scratching and biting herself. My vet said the dry coat and flaky skin was due to the poor nutrition in the puppy chow. He said feeding this to her was the equivalent of me eating McDonalds every day. He recommended some good quality food brands and I ended up choosing Authority. The change was dramatic to say the least. Within days the bad gas stopped and in about a week her coat was looking healthier and the flaky, dry skin is gone.

I would NOT recommend this food to anyone. It might have a nice price tag and the commercials make it look good, but if you were to ask your vet, he/she would likely tell you the same thing mine told me. I asked not only my local vet, but 2 other vets so I could additional opinions. They all said the same thing about it being like mcdonalds for me every day. And I never even mentioned that part to them! I just asked what they thought of the brand for my puppy!

Pros: price

Cons: poor nutrition, dried out coat and skin

I'm glad I researched food before I got my Pomeranian pup. The breeder was feeding this when I got him, and after I switched him to Blue Buffalo, he was pottying less (because he was actually utilizing the food instead of wasting it since this food is filler), his coat quality increased dramatically and was much softer, his tears lessened, his eyes were brighter, he was shedding less, and he had a lot more energy.

We have a total of 5 dogs, the other four are free fed Purina (they're my mom's dogs) and he won't even TOUCH their food.

I would not recommend this food. It's nothing but a waste of money - all it does is fill up the dog's stomach and make pickup duties more time consuming.

I started feeding my 2 puppies this food when they were 5 weeks. They have always loved it and their vet has always said their coats, eyes and weight were good and overall were very healthy. They have never had any problems with their stools like some other people have complained about (unlesss they ate something they weren't suppose to)

Purina Puppy chow is a GREAT brand. I don't get why everyone keeps saying bad things about it! My dog has been eating Purina Puppy chow since I got her, and her coat if soft and shiny, her teeth are bright and clean, her eyes are bright and clear. The only problem is that her stools are ALMOST solid, not fully. Anyways, I would recommend this food.

Pros: shiny coat, clear shiny eyes

Cons: stools aren't solid

My dog was fed Puppy Chow as a pup. I never thought anything of it, either. He always appeared healthy on this food. A visit to my veterinarian confirmed that he was not *really* healthy. His shedding was out of control, and he smelled terrible. Switching to a better quality food instantly solved the problem.

Think of it this way. There are two men, one who eats at McDonald's every day and one who eats fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains... you get the picture.

Cons: high in fillers, low in fresh meat (as opposed to by-products), by-products

I have given this to all my puppies (giant breed) and they love this puppy food! I can tell a difference between my dogs overall appearance compared to those of their sister's appearance, who was raised at another home; I accredit the difference largely to mine having the Purina Puppy Chow advantage.

This food is absolutely terible for your dog. It has no good meat source, only a by-product witch is the feathers,head,beaks and feet,etc. That is terrible. It is also filled with corn witch is very hard for dogs to break down and can cause allergies in dogs. If I were you I would switch to something a little better like iams and its only a few dollars more. Or you could switch to natures recipe witch has no by-products or corn and its only a few dollars more than iams.

Cheaper isn't always better

This isn't good puppy food... i recently received a 7week old puppy and she did not like this food at all and it made her constipated. Which made me worry so i was researching online to see if anyone else has this problem and it turns out if you read the ingredients the first 4 items:Whole grain corn, chicken by-product meal, corn gluten meal,and brewers rice are the worst thing for dogs especially puppies to ingest because its hard for them to break down! after a little research i found that the best food for a puppy is Nature's Recipe Puppy Food because it doesn't have any type of corn or by-products. Its only a few dollars more and my puppy hasn't been constipated and LOVED IT!!!!

Pros: it was cheaper

Cons: puppy constipated wouldn't eat it not nutrional

I love this food because even my finicky mountain fiest puppies eat it with pleasure. I've tried everything from Iams to Nutro-my result remained Purina Puppy Chow. It's inexpensive and small enough for almost every small dog breed. This food is like Gerber for dogs and lets you move to different formulas as my puppies grow. I would buy this kibble any day over the pricey brands like Nutro or Blue Buffalo. Overall, I have no problema with this food.

I was recommended this dog food by my vet and the breeder who sold me the dog. He has gained weight, his hair is growing and the pieces are small enough for him to chew. He is only 3.1lbs, a Yorkie. Also the price is great.

My puppy originally weighed 7 lbs. when we got her. We fed her the puppy chow just as the breeder told us to. She started losing weight so we took her to the vet to make sure she was alright. She was fine. We started feeding her a different kind of food that she ate better and she gained all the weight back.

I ha my pups on this for a few weeks, and I was glad to take them off of it! They had very loose stools, and were eating so much. This food has little nutritional value, so they had to eat more to get the nutrients they needed.

The price is overall good, but you only get what you pay for. This food is not ideal for pups that have sensitive stomachs.

I switched to Nutro, and I see a much better pup because of it!
