Add Another Power Pet Door Fan!,
April 12, 2007
by AmericanDad
from Jackson, MS
"Add me to your list of Power Pet Door aficionados! I bought this product over eight months ago and it has never quit. My dog goes in and out at least 30 times a day. That's a lot of cycles over eight months and the door does not show any signs of fatigue and barely any wear. If you knew the kind of four legged monster that uses and abuses it, you'd really be amazed! It's nice to spend a fairly large chunk of change and actually be happy that you did! Thanks."

DEFINITELY WORTH THE MONEY,
December 26, 2006
by bravedave
from St Paul, MN
"This is a great piece of technology. I bought my door in August and have had no problems. It is solid and well built. The lexan panel that opens and closes for the dog is actually 1/4 inch thick. I have never seen such a thick, rugged door before. Operation is very reliable. The panel opens quickly in about one second. Even when my dogs approach it at a dead run it is fully open before they reach it. Insulation is air tight and once the panel is down it locks securely. The product seems to have been engineered to anticipate the needs of pets and their owners very well. I especially like the directional sensing system. When my dogs wander by it stays closed but, when they turn and face the unit it opens like magic. The adjustable range is also very useful. I set the outside distance at about 5 feet and the inside at about 2 feet. This is because they are more likely to be running towards the unit from the outside. At night, I turn off the inside sensor and when the “boys” come in they can’t go out again. This actually frees me from having to call them in at bedtime.
I have read many of the other comments here and what many seem to have in common is the remark that pets love the door. This couldn’t be more true in my case. I have two hunting dogs that really get a kick out of using the product. They really seem to enjoy the empowerment it gives them.
Overall a very well built, reliable and useful product that has improved the quality of life of my dogs. I feel I got my money’s worth and I’m happy to have purchased this item from PetsMart."

GREAT, RELIABLE PRODUCT!,
December 3, 2006
by sportsman100
from Jackson, MS
"I bought the Power Pet door from PetsMart when it first appeared. The product is really amazing! It's the only pet door I've seen that really keeps out wind and cold. It is absolutely air tight! The moves up and down very quickly and quietly and Max, our 84 pound mutt does seem to like using it. So far, no problems. The thing appears to be as reliable as you would expect from a PetsMart item and Max must use it 50 times a day, really! Also, I like the safety auto retract feature. If the panel touches anything on the way down it quickly reverses and goes back up again, kind of like an elevator door. This is important to me because we also have small children (other than Max) and we feel the product is completely safe for use in our home.
Great to get such a useful product from a trusted name like PetsMart."

SIMPLY FABULOUS PRODUCT,
December 2, 2006
by leanadoglvr
from Havre de Grace, MD
"I ordered the Power Pet door from PetsMart in May of 2006. Now our family couldn't live without it. We have 2 dogs and a cat and all three love it! My husband spent about 2 or 3 hours cutting a hole through the family room wall. After that it only took minutes to install the door. We also bought the wall adapter that made it really easy for him to make a professionally finished looking job. The door looks great and works great. No rain or weather problems. It's fun to watch our pets use it and they really seem to enjoy it. It's taken the effort out of letting them in and out and it's much more secure than a regular pet door. We definately recommend this product to all PetsMart customers!"

Wonderful Product!,
October 30, 2006
by martaylor
from Clayton, NC
"We have had or Power Pet door for about five months now and it has worked flawlessly. The unit looks great and has really made a difference in our ability to care for our dogs. No more having to let them in and out ten times a day. We would not have considered a flap door because we have stray animals in the neighborhood. Also we are concerned with our heating bills and this door has an air-tight seal. It locks automatically upon closure so we feel quite safe from intruders. All in all, this really is a wonderful product that has actually changed our lives! Thanks PetsMart!"

Great for Mentally Challenged Dogs!,
October 12, 2006
by pamd
from Cheshire, CT
"Marmaduke, our Great Dane, Lab mix is 104 pounds of pure love. Unfortunately, he is not exactly doggie Einstein. There was the time he BIT a porcupine, ouch! Another time (this is true) he showed off his hunting prowess but chasing down and capturing a skunk. And of course, there's that time he decided to let himself out by jumping out our second story bedroom window, which was closed! Still, he is a great pooch. Take away his brain and you've got 103.99 pounds of pure love.
When my husband suggested we get Marmaduke an automatic door, I figured it would take him a couple of years to learn how to work it. Amazingly, minutes after installing and testing the product, Marmaduke walked right up to it, it zipped open and he walked right through. Then he turned around and gave his stunned owners a look like "Well, that was obvious."
This automatic door is just wonderful, it has freed up our busy lives and done wonders for Marmaduke's self esteem. He just loves letting himself in and out and, unlike the bedroom window, we don't have to pick up shards of glass every time he wants to go outside."

Power Pet Door,
November 7, 2009
by Ckkoehler
from Portland, OR
Pros: easy to install Cons: transmitter collars are cheap
"Oh my, this product ROCKS!! I love the way we no longer have to worry about letting in the cold. It does make noise when it opens but sometimes that is good. I know that they are leaving. It was easy to install, it is tough and so far reliable. I dont like the transmitter collars because they are cheaply made but the door is not like that. The dogs took to it right away. I like the settings options and that you can close the door at night to keep everyone in. I feel safe with the unit because the door does not stay open too long. I do have one dog that like to sit and stare at it, which makes the door open but I think he likes it. I would recommend this product. I am sure they could improve on it but so far it is working well. I hope the engine can hold out to all the coming and going my dogs are doing, so far so good."

Door is great, but get a back-up collar,
October 21, 2009
by kcamow
from San Diego, CA
"I bought this door a couple weeks ago, and other than the collar dying after only ONE WEEK, I love it! It worked as well as advertised and was very easy to train my dog to use. So, as several of the other reviewers suggested--order an extra collar to have on hand right away. By the way, I called the manufacturer when the collar stopped working and they are sending me one for no charge by Fed Ex and were very nice about it. But meanwhile, my poor dog is very confused about why her new door doesn't work."

High Tech Pet Door,
September 26, 2009
by MaryCO
from Littleton, CO
Pros: green technology, saves energy, keeps out wild animals, very secure, works great! Cons: not available in all pet smarts
"We bought the power pet door from our local Pet Smart last year. It works wonderfully. The dog just LOVES it and we do as well. It is extremely well insulated and is saving us money on utility bills. We are fanatics about green appliances and this one definitely helps the environment because the owner uses less energy. It also does a great job keeping out the raccoons and opossums that run wild in our neighborhood. We have not had a single problem with the door or collar other than having to replace the collar battery every 4 or 5 months. Our only complaint is that the item and accessories are no longer carried by our local store. We had to order the battery charger online. Also we have to order the batteries online from Petsmart.com or other online retailer. We would like to see it come back to the Littleton, CO Pet Smart."

Our Dog Loves This Door As Much As We Do!,
August 6, 2009
by Lovemypup2
from Woodbury, MN
Pros: well made, reliable, weather sealed, works with electronic fence, dog oves it
"We bought the Power Pet door along with the Humane Contain fence because the collar operates both systems. We are very pleased with both products. Our dog can let himself in and out of the house whenever he wants without inviting in the neighborhood cats, dogs, raccoons and who know who else? The door has worked reliably without a single problem. It is very well manufactured and very weather tight. This product has improved our home and our lives. Best of all, our dog absolutely loves his new automatic door. Our friends and guests are always amazed when they see this product in our home and we always recommend it."

Best Pet Product I ever bought,
July 19, 2009
by Joebalt
from Baltimore, MD
Pros: pet door works with the electoronic fence, rugged, reliable, collar is waterproof
"I bought the Power Pet door and the Humane Contain X-10 dog fence that also opens the pet door. The combination of these products is like a dream come true. Both have worked flawlessly. The Power Pet door has relieved us from the drudgery of letting the dog in and out. The electronic fence does a great job of keeping our pooch safely in the yard. Now, he can roam around safely and come in and out of the house as he pleases and we don't have to worry about his safety or about "accidents" in the house. We give this combination of products our highest recommendation!"

DON'T GET THE COLLAR WET!,
July 16, 2009
by BethAnn
from Drummond Island, MI
"It's not exactly what I would consider quiet and the collars can be a bit touchy.
Other than that, this is a wonderful product. We've had the door just over a year. Took my 2 dogs about 30 seconds to figure out how to use it. And they absolutely love it! My retriever-spaniel mix won't use the people door at all anymore.
It can be a little scary making that first cut of a HOLE in your WALL, but I live in Northen Michigan and the winters are freezing, the door doesn't leak cold, rain, or anything. My dogs also constantly scratch at it when it's turned off and it still looks like new.
Definately worth the $$$."

Finally! A door that works!,
July 3, 2009
by sr5599
from Portland, OR
"I've tried several other cat doors in the past couple of years. I have multiple cats and some are allowed out while others need to be indoor. Other doors have frequently broken, locking a cat out or in.
Since I purchased the Power Pet door, it has functioned perfectly every single time. I no longer worry that my cats will be stuck outside. I have not had a single problem with it!
I highly recommend the Power Pet door to anyone who needs an electronic door. It is worth every penny!"

Best Thing That Ever Happened To Rusty!,
June 18, 2009
by DOGSBF
from Gallup, NM
Pros: rugged, reliable, keeps out stray animals, windproof, waterproof collar, dead bolt lock Cons: none so far
"Rusty, our big, red, clumsy Great Dane mix, used to destroy a dog door every few months. After removing the remaining pieces of the last one, we researched every pet door we could find in hopes of discovering one that could hold its own against Rusty. This pet door, much to our surprise, really did the job. We were a little hesitant at the thought of spending $350 on a pet door but, figured that we could always board up the hole and return the product to Petsmart. So, we went ahead and gave it a try. We couldn’t have been more impressed and delighted with a product. The power pet door is very well made and has taken all the punishment Rusty can dish out with only minor bruises to show for it. For us, we just wanted a rugged dog door. The automatic operation is just icing on the cake. It does make it very convenient, however. The door is extremely wind resistant and secure against intruders (animal and human) and it’s wonderful not to have to get up at night to let Rusty out and back in again. We read a lot of great reviews about this door but, there was one that said the collars don’t work when wet. The collar that came with ours was apparently a new, improved one that does work when wet. So, no need to worry about that. We have now had the product for about a year without a single problem. The only thing we had to do was replace the collar battery after about seven months. We love this pet door and so does Rusty even though he finally met his match."

RUGGED, RELIABLE, WELL BUILT PET DOOR,
April 7, 2009
by AnnieMalLover
from Gunlock, UT
Pros: rugged, reliable, well built, dog loves it, weatherproof, saves energy, stands up to extreme weather Cons: a little pricey but worth it!
"I wish I had found this product years ago. I ordered the Power Pet door from Petsmart.com in January of 2008. It was very easy to install and it has worked perfectly since that time without a single problem. We live in a part of Utah that gets a lot of snow in the winter. Summers are sweltering with temperatures sometimes reaching into the 100s. Other times of the year we get high winds. We needed a dog door that was tough enough to stand up to these conditions. When we saw the Power Pet door on HGTV it looked exactly like what we needed and we were right. It has proven to be extremely reliable and has held up to the kind of weather which has made mincemeat out of some lesser products that we tried. This door has made the grade and was well worth the money we spent. In addition, I called the manufacturer, High Tech Pet Products, to inquire about the battery back up system. They were extremely knowledgeable, helpful and best of all didn’t make me feel like an idiot when they explained how the technology works. I was about to order a battery and charger direct from their website but they were helpful enough to point out that it was a little cheaper on petsmart.com where we made our purchase. This is a reliable and well built product made by a trustworthy company. We are very happy with the door and with Petsmart.com!"

THIS PET DOOR CHANGED OUR LIVES!,
April 1, 2009
by MarieInND
from Minot, ND
Pros: very well made, reliable and dependable, keeps out strays, lowered my heat bill, dog loves it Cons: neighbors are jealous
"I know it sounds crazy, but this pet door has actually changed our lives! My husband and I used to be bugged night and day whenever Lucy, our Doberman, wanted to go out or come it. Try as we did, we could not train her to "go" at similarly scheduled times during the day. So, we were basically at her beck and call whenever the urge hit her. We love her to death but, we were really getting exhausted being her private valets. Then there were those few occasions when neither of us could get home fast enough to let her out. The consequences, as you might imagine, were terrible! We tried a flap type door which let in cold air along with every dog, cat, mouse and lizard in the neighborhood. We looked at the Power Pet door online and thought about getting it but, decided instead on a cheaper electronic door that required Lucy to push open a hard plastic flap. This did not work well for her. Often, the lock would engage before the flap shut completely, actually locking the flap to one side so she couldn’t get in. However, the neighbor’s cat, who seems to be a little smarter then Lucy, could open it with her paw. Once, Lucy tried to back up when she was only halfway through and got stuck. That was the point where we “bit the bullet” and forked over nearly $400.00 for the Power Pet door. In short, it’s been a godsend. The automatic up and down action overcame all the problems with the other units. It lets her in an out whenever she wants without fail. It keeps all the other creatures out and it is completely windproof. Please don’t tell Petsmart but, we would have gladly paid twice the price had we known how well this product works. Lucy is now free to come and go as she pleases and we are free to have a life! Incidentally, we saw the product and it’s inventor featured on the Discovery Channel recently. It’s no wonder the item is getting so much attention. We think it’s the best pet product to come along in years. This wonderful pet door gets our highest recommendation."

Try calling the technical support!,
March 3, 2009
by Martin
from SA, TX
Pros: cheap Cons: transmitter fails too often, no customer support, door binds if screws are tighten, have to readjust sensors on door too often
"I have never talked to anyone at High Tech. No one ever answers. All mail boxes are full. Every 3 months, a transmitter fails. 6 months, the outside sensor failed. 18 months, the motor failed. I now have 5 transmitters for two dogs. Always having to have a transmitter on rotation being sent back to High Tech for replacements @ $30 a pop. Wow! What a real deal. On installation, could not tighten screws or it will bind the slide. Go with the more expensive unit that uses magnets! More reliable."

Very Disappointed,
March 3, 2009
by Brandi303
from Pennsylvania
"We installed our door last fall and it's been nothing but trouble. It worked fine for a few weeks. Then it appeared to be collar failure. We've replaced the collars and batteries several time. When this door works, it's great! I contacted the manufacturer by email last week. At their site, they say they get back to you within 24 hours. I'm still waiting. Their troubleshooting site was a little helpful but didn't answer all my questions. The door opens onto a roof covered area. It's not exposed to any elements other than the outside cold. My dogs love the door when it works. It works well with the manual button but not the collars. I had such great hopes for this door especially for the price. I am truly disappointed in it and will be seeking to replace it something else. I need realiability and this door just doesn't give it."

Great When It Works,
January 5, 2009
by Nylox2004
from Gladstone, MO
Pros: great design and functionality, great features, can keep pets in or out, battery backup option (extra) Cons: collars quit when barely wet, have to send door in for warranty leaving a hole.
"We purchased one of these less than a year ago and have enjoyed it up until now. It is quite a convenience for us and our pets not having to constantly open doors for them.
I will start out by saying that this door has performed well and I am I'm not going to give this door poor ratings (yet) due to it failing. Anything electrical/mechanical can fail no matter how well it's built or designed. It has been very well used by 3 large dogs. The overall design of the door is pretty well thought out and it functions pretty well. It has great features such as being able to select whether to have the door work fully automatic, let the dogs in only, or let the dogs out only. The battery backup feature is great also and came in very handy during a power outage that lasted 3 days. The door never even slowed down the whole time. We and our pets have become very spoiled with this door. That's why it's a real pain when it quit working.
There are only a few negative things that I will point out to anyone thinking of purchasing this door. The number 1 complaint I have had up until this point is that the collar transmitters could be better designed. They absolutely don't like water at all and if your pet gets wet outside or inside, there is a good chance you will end up replacing the collar transmitter and they are not cheap. You may be able to salvage them by taking them apart and soaking them in 95% rubbing alcohol and using a blow dryer on the cool setting to dry them out. I was able to repair them on two different occasions with this method and only had to purchase 1 additional collar due to it not working. Once the transmitter speaker gets wet it will not work until thoroughly cleaned and dried. They still have not made these things water resistant even with all of the complaints. So be warned! Remember to take off the collar when playing with the hose or giving baths! And if it's raining outside your pet may not be able to get back inside.
The other thing to consider is what happens if and when the door quits working. Our door is installed in the wall so even though it is being warrantied by the company, we will have a big hole in the house in the mean time. Of course it didn't quit working until it was winter time and the temperatures are reaching near the zero mark. So having a hole in the house covered with a temporary piece of plywood is how we are stuck until we get the door back from the repair facility. They were not willing to send repair parts and requested that the door be sent in even though I could have easily repaired the problem with a repair part. (motor) This is understandable for business reasons and I do not hold this against the manufacturer.
I will update this review depending on the service and speed in which the warranty repair is performed."
