Add me to your list of Power Pet Door aficionados! I bought this product over eight months ago and it has never quit. My dog goes in and out at least 30 times a day. That's a lot of cycles over eight months and the door does not show any signs of fatigue and barely any wear. If you knew the kind of four legged monster that uses and abuses it, you'd really be amazed! It's nice to spend a fairly large chunk of change and actually be happy that you did! Thanks.

This is a great piece of technology. I bought my door in August and have had no problems. It is solid and well built. The lexan panel that opens and closes for the dog is actually 1/4 inch thick. I have never seen such a thick, rugged door before. Operation is very reliable. The panel opens quickly in about one second. Even when my dogs approach it at a dead run it is fully open before they reach it. Insulation is air tight and once the panel is down it locks securely. The product seems to have been engineered to anticipate the needs of pets and their owners very well. I especially like the directional sensing system. When my dogs wander by it stays closed but, when they turn and face the unit it opens like magic. The adjustable range is also very useful. I set the outside distance at about 5 feet and the inside at about 2 feet. This is because they are more likely to be running towards the unit from the outside. At night, I turn off the inside sensor and when the “boys” come in they can’t go out again. This actually frees me from having to call them in at bedtime.

I have read many of the other comments here and what many seem to have in common is the remark that pets love the door. This couldn’t be more true in my case. I have two hunting dogs that really get a kick out of using the product. They really seem to enjoy the empowerment it gives them.

Overall a very well built, reliable and useful product that has improved the quality of life of my dogs. I feel I got my money’s worth and I’m happy to have purchased this item from PetsMart.

I bought the Power Pet door from PetsMart when it first appeared. The product is really amazing! It's the only pet door I've seen that really keeps out wind and cold. It is absolutely air tight! The moves up and down very quickly and quietly and Max, our 84 pound mutt does seem to like using it. So far, no problems. The thing appears to be as reliable as you would expect from a PetsMart item and Max must use it 50 times a day, really! Also, I like the safety auto retract feature. If the panel touches anything on the way down it quickly reverses and goes back up again, kind of like an elevator door. This is important to me because we also have small children (other than Max) and we feel the product is completely safe for use in our home.

Great to get such a useful product from a trusted name like PetsMart.

I ordered the Power Pet door from PetsMart in May of 2006. Now our family couldn't live without it. We have 2 dogs and a cat and all three love it! My husband spent about 2 or 3 hours cutting a hole through the family room wall. After that it only took minutes to install the door. We also bought the wall adapter that made it really easy for him to make a professionally finished looking job. The door looks great and works great. No rain or weather problems. It's fun to watch our pets use it and they really seem to enjoy it. It's taken the effort out of letting them in and out and it's much more secure than a regular pet door. We definately recommend this product to all PetsMart customers!

We have had or Power Pet door for about five months now and it has worked flawlessly. The unit looks great and has really made a difference in our ability to care for our dogs. No more having to let them in and out ten times a day. We would not have considered a flap door because we have stray animals in the neighborhood. Also we are concerned with our heating bills and this door has an air-tight seal. It locks automatically upon closure so we feel quite safe from intruders. All in all, this really is a wonderful product that has actually changed our lives! Thanks PetsMart!

Marmaduke, our Great Dane, Lab mix is 104 pounds of pure love. Unfortunately, he is not exactly doggie Einstein. There was the time he BIT a porcupine, ouch! Another time (this is true) he showed off his hunting prowess but chasing down and capturing a skunk. And of course, there's that time he decided to let himself out by jumping out our second story bedroom window, which was closed! Still, he is a great pooch. Take away his brain and you've got 103.99 pounds of pure love.

When my husband suggested we get Marmaduke an automatic door, I figured it would take him a couple of years to learn how to work it. Amazingly, minutes after installing and testing the product, Marmaduke walked right up to it, it zipped open and he walked right through. Then he turned around and gave his stunned owners a look like "Well, that was obvious."

This automatic door is just wonderful, it has freed up our busy lives and done wonders for Marmaduke's self esteem. He just loves letting himself in and out and, unlike the bedroom window, we don't have to pick up shards of glass every time he wants to go outside.

We have had it installed and in use for a year now.
Great: the dog gets exercise; we let him out the one door and he runs around the house and in the dog door.
Good: It works.
Neutral: It can be picky to set up (adjusting sensors so they're most sensitive but not overloaded, aka flashing), and installation can also be an issue if the screws securing the two halves are too tight.
Bad: An energetic dog (ours) will come in before the door is fully up; sometimes this causes the door to come back down and not open again (sensor issue?). Human intervention is needed to jiggle the door and use the open button to open the door.
The battery in use (cr2430) is one of the slightly more expensive and less common ones, so buy a 2-pack and each battery will last for 6 months.
Other: He picked it up quickly; we did use a masking tape "X" on the see-thru door to help him figure out when the door was down or up, but that only took a week before we reduced it to a little stripe of tape, and another week before we removed the tape.

An automated butler for your pup

This is exactly what you need if you have two dogs like mine how are in, then out, then in, etc. all day long. This great invention allows them to be in control, and certainly eliminates the need for me to be at their beck and call. In fact, when we travelled with them, they were astounded that the condo we stayed at didn't have one and they actually had to ask to go outside:) I have installed 3 of these, one at each door so they can come and go into the fenced backyard. When I need to keep them in the house, just a push of a button makes the door stay shut. You can even keep them outside that way, too. You won't want to use the collar they send, though, as it is flimsy. Just take a zip tie and connect it to your dogs regular collar. I have had to replace several of the collar devices due to wear and tear over the past 2 years which does add to the expense, but it is well worth it for a full-service doggie butler.

Possessed Door

The concept of this door is great. My dogs loved the see-through door. The product itself is not good. We have had this door installed for 2 weeks. Now the sensors do not work on it. The door is possessed. It keeps opening and shutting on it's own non-stop. Normally the sensor would know that the dog is entering/exiting and it will lift the door back up. Not now. It keeps going up and down regardless and it scared my dog. Good luck trying to exchange it "hassle-free".

My dog developed cushings and needs to go out in the middle of the night as well as a lot during the day so I spent the money on this electronic door. The door does do a good job of keeping other animals out as well as keeping cold air from coming in. . .

But it stopped working after about 3 days of use. After going up it would go back down about 1/2 way and then go back up and repeat this 30+ times before either I went over and turned it off or it finally went fully down.

Emailing high tech pet is very difficult - After filling out the customer service form (two times) I got an email saying they get a lot of spam and wouldn't be able to read my email (not very high tech!!!!) unless I put something in the subject line. . .it wouldn't take an IT wiz to figure another way around this. Also, during business hours I haven't been able to get a hold of a real person. Pet Smart was fantastic in accepting my return. I plan on getting a Solo brand dog door with the hope that it will be a better product.

I ordered this door for a lab that was terrified of fireworks and storms when outside. It took literally twice for the dog to get the idea how to use the door. Love the ability for her to go out whenever she wishes and I don't have to be there. Love the security of knowing my other pets (cats) can't get out and that is is weather protected. Unit is well constructed and easy to install except I would install a bit lower than they advise. Motor is quiet and not heard out of room at all. Been using about a week so far and no problems at all. I think I found a solution to my doors fears! A bit pricey but worth it!

I bought the Power Pet doggie door from Petsmart about 2 years ago. I can see why it is one of your top sellers. This is the most useful pet product I have every purchased. The unit itself is very well made. The collars are also well made although changing the battery is a little tricky. I had to go back to the instructions to figure out the the battery needs to be placed between the spring and contact not on top of the contact. Once figured out it works flawlessly. I am getting a battery life of about 4 months. If only my cell phone battery lasted that long! Again, my whole family LOVES this item, not to mention the fact that our dog won't even use the regular door anymore. When we open the back door, he still perfers to go out through his personal Power Pet door. This is a well engineered, well made product. We are so glad we bought it.

Pros: well engineered, reliable, small collar, dog loves it!

Beware purchasing this door for one very important reason - the collars. We purchased the door about 4 months ago. The door itself works fine, but the collars are beyond disappointing. The batteries only last about 2months max. We popped the collars open and replaced the batteries and they didn't work anymore. We emailed Power Pet for help and didn't even get a response. Since we were forced to use the door (older dog losing bladder control), we were forced to buy more collars. We bought the 'heavy duty' ones this time. The batteries died in 2months and the replacement attempt didn't revive them either. We submitted requests through Power Pet's website, including two messages to Nick Bonge, the president, with again not even getting a response. Obviously, no matter how good a product the door is, it is useless without the collar. So unless you are prepared to purchase new collars every 2months for each of your pets using the door, avoid this product

I can't imagine life without this door. We have had it for over a year now and share our home with two dogs and two cats. A conservative estimate of it's opening and closing would be between 50-100 times a day. All of them go in and out all day long, 24/7. The only problem we have had is when the door got wet from hose spray and that was probably because we missed a spot with the caulk (ours was installed through a wall). The door quit working for a few hours until it dried completely and then it was as good as new. This is without a doubt the best pet product we have ever purchased. One cat keeps losing his collar, so we keep some extras in the house at all times. His name is Dickens and he lives up to the title. He has gone through four collars in the first year, but even that is a small price to pay for the convenience of this door. If it ever did break I can assure you it would be replaced immediately. The dogs love it, the cats love it and we love it!

WE LOVE THIS DOG DOOR! It is truly an awesome product that has made a difference in our lives. No more having to worry about letting the dogs out. They come and go when nature calls without affecting the security or temperature of our home. We had a flap door that let cold air in and we worried that a prowler could gain entry to our house via the flap. The Power Pet item locks securely when it closes to keep our home safe and warm. The door and the collars have worked with no problems at all for over a year now. The only maintenance is changing the collar batteries about twice a year. This is really the best pet item we ever purchased. Well worth the $$$. Did I mention it's just AWSOME?

Oh my, this product ROCKS!! I love the way we no longer have to worry about letting in the cold. It does make noise when it opens but sometimes that is good. I know that they are leaving. It was easy to install, it is tough and so far reliable. I dont like the transmitter collars because they are cheaply made but the door is not like that. The dogs took to it right away. I like the settings options and that you can close the door at night to keep everyone in. I feel safe with the unit because the door does not stay open too long. I do have one dog that like to sit and stare at it, which makes the door open but I think he likes it. I would recommend this product. I am sure they could improve on it but so far it is working well. I hope the engine can hold out to all the coming and going my dogs are doing, so far so good.

I bought this door a couple weeks ago, and other than the collar dying after only ONE WEEK, I love it! It worked as well as advertised and was very easy to train my dog to use. So, as several of the other reviewers suggested--order an extra collar to have on hand right away. By the way, I called the manufacturer when the collar stopped working and they are sending me one for no charge by Fed Ex and were very nice about it. But meanwhile, my poor dog is very confused about why her new door doesn't work.

We bought the power pet door from our local Pet Smart last year. It works wonderfully. The dog just LOVES it and we do as well. It is extremely well insulated and is saving us money on utility bills. We are fanatics about green appliances and this one definitely helps the environment because the owner uses less energy. It also does a great job keeping out the raccoons and opossums that run wild in our neighborhood. We have not had a single problem with the door or collar other than having to replace the collar battery every 4 or 5 months. Our only complaint is that the item and accessories are no longer carried by our local store. We had to order the battery charger online. Also we have to order the batteries online from Petsmart.com or other online retailer. We would like to see it come back to the Littleton, CO Pet Smart.

Pros: green technology, saves energy, keeps out wild animals, very secure, works great!

Cons: not available in all pet smarts

We bought the Power Pet door along with the Humane Contain fence because the collar operates both systems. We are very pleased with both products. Our dog can let himself in and out of the house whenever he wants without inviting in the neighborhood cats, dogs, raccoons and who know who else? The door has worked reliably without a single problem. It is very well manufactured and very weather tight. This product has improved our home and our lives. Best of all, our dog absolutely loves his new automatic door. Our friends and guests are always amazed when they see this product in our home and we always recommend it.

I bought the Power Pet door and the Humane Contain X-10 dog fence that also opens the pet door. The combination of these products is like a dream come true. Both have worked flawlessly. The Power Pet door has relieved us from the drudgery of letting the dog in and out. The electronic fence does a great job of keeping our pooch safely in the yard. Now, he can roam around safely and come in and out of the house as he pleases and we don't have to worry about his safety or about "accidents" in the house. We give this combination of products our highest recommendation!
