I needed an auto feeding function for a week of my absence from home. I tested it for 2 days, set it as instructed, and hoped for the best. I found on my return that the feeder dropped flakes 4 times out of 14, before the feeding containers ring got stuck. The mechanism is not reliable, and the ring turning force is not high enough to turn it when any minor obstruction occurs. Good thing is that my fish survived.

Purchased this feeder last year and mounted atop a 55 gallon fish tank so that I would not have to return so frequently to my classroom in the summer and during breaks. I load it with large cichlid pellets and flake food at the same time and set it to feed every 6 hours. It is important to keep it clean and ensure the air pump is on. This keeps it dry. Otherwise, humidity will cause the food to get wet and it will not be able to turn.. and fungus will grow on it. Just bought another one for my new terrarium!!

There are many automatic fish feeders. Most are vertical drum configurations that scoop and dump a portion of the drum's contents of food each time they complete a rotation. This FishMate feeder is very different with its horizontal turntable configuration and 15 individual turntable compartments. Most of the vertical drum feeders state that they are designed to work with fine flake food but do not work well with food pellets. I needed a feeder for my red slider aquatic turtles, which I feed Wardley Reptile pellet food (cylindrical pellets about 1/2" long and 1/8" diameter), so the vertical drum feeders where not a good option and would probably clog or at best dump very inconsistent amounts of pellets each day. This Fishmate Feeder was exactly the right design for feeding Wardley pelleted food to my turtles. It has 14 compartments in the turntable that can be filled with precise quantities of food in each compartment for each meal (the 15th compartment sits over the open drop hole so it cannot be filled). I am able to put 20 Wardley pellets into each compartment so that the compartment is filled flush at its top, but the feeder cover is more than a 1/4" higher that the top of the turntable, so I can put about 26 pellets into each compartment if I allow a small amount of the food to pile higher than the turntable's top edge. The turntable's motor mechanism looks like it is probably from a quartz time clock, and it runs on a single AA battery and is very quiet. You can set feeding frequency from 1-4 times per day (or zero times) using the included 4 removeable red ticker pins which engage a tooth on the side of each compartment in the turntable each time they rotate past the apex point of the turntable. The included mounting clamps, which are tightened to the aquarium's top edge using a sturdy screw clamp mechanism, remain on the tank allowing the feeder to be easily removed and cleaned without having to remove and realign the clamps when refilling or cleaning the feeder. The feeder slides down onto vertical posts extending from the clamps, and is held out over the open water of the tank, extending horizontally from the aquarium's edge. The turntable ring containg the food compartments is NOT physically attached to the base of the feeder or the power mechanism, but rather glides on the base and is held in place by perimeter guide rails and a small post. So the compartment ring can be instantly removed just by lifting it off, making for very easy cleaning if your particular food is greasy or leaves a residue which can build up on the turntable base. The compartments in the rotating turntable ring have completely open bottoms, so that when they are rotated over the open drop hole in the feeder base, the food just freely drops through. Food from a compartment is dropped little-by-little over a 1 hour period as the turnatble compartment is slowly rotated over the drop hole in the feeder base by the slowly turning power clock mechanism. I have used the feeder for over a month with great results and no problems, and the power clock mechanism appears to keep time accurately. For those with turtles, I found the unexpected benefit of readjusted behavior in my turtles. Instead of the turtles always coming to the front of the aquarium splashing their front paws and begging for food each time a person approaches, they now act more naturally and have calmed down a lot so that you can approach the tank and observe their normal behavioral activites without the human spectator becoming the center of the turtles' attention. So although I originally purchased the feeder as a vacation feeder, I now use it for every day feeding. I could hardly imagine a better feeder for my turtles. Really worth every penny!
