Doesn't work and scares my dog
March 13, 2013
by amills01

This doesn't work for my dogs - they are terrified when I try to put it on them and it seems to be making their issues with other dogs worse. I spoke with a positive dog trainer who recommended a no-pull harness and we are having great results. My dogs aren't pulling, aren't afraid and are not associating dogs with punishment.
Cons: Doesn't Work on Training

I have a very energetic five month old great dane and he pulls so bad. With this on, he does not pull AT ALL. best of all it does not cause discomfort for him and it looks good. All around good buy. I will probably have to buy a bigger one when he gets full grown. Highly Recommended.

This Collar worked perfectly. It's easy to use and does not seem to cause discomfort to your dog. I was a little concerned it might not work but it helped me control my dog. When used my dog rarely will pull forward.

I have a three year old Alaskan Malamute. He is very energetic and easy to excite. Almost immediately after the collar was put on there was a change in his attitude and his pulling almost completely stopped. While this collar was not made to correct lunges, it has made him stop to at least think about chasing the small neighborhood animals. I would not recommend taking your dog to a new place with it on, but for everyday walking it get the job done tremendously.

Within the first use there was a difference! I have a 6month old, 40 pound husky. I have tried everything to stop her from pulling me around. This really works! I can walk her now instead of her walking me!

Training Collar

This collar is wonderful. I have used it for years since I first went to a trainer with my Cocker Spanial. It works instantly. I have a Lab puppy who was pulling on the leash. I put on this collar and he immediately behaved himself. Well worth it to use this and it doesn't hurt them. The trainer I used explained to me that the mother trains the puppies by gently nipping on their neck which is the same function the collar does.

I will never use this on my animal. It is not an effective collar. It is very heavy and weighs on the top of my dogs neck with little to no weight underneath. This would cause dents in her skin that looked like your carpet after moving a chair. When we laid down after training I would scratch underneath were the collar was and she'de melt like butter. It became clear to me that she was very uncomfortable and not happy. Also, i noticed other peoples reaction to the collar was that she was a bad dog with no discipline.

A must have item!

I have a 5-month old, 70-lb bull mastiff “puppy”. Walking with her generally resulted in blue fingers from the lack of circulation to my hand from wrapping the leash around my wrist. She is generally reasonable but very friendly and obviously too big to lunge at small children. This collar was a miracle from the moment I put it on her. When we left the house she looked like an old dog just out for a stroll – right by my side and barely flinching when yappy dogs and kids on bikes went by. I would never have though this was possible. I was literally hanging the leash off of one finger. She wears the 22” but I did remove 4 of the links and would agree that the “snap on” needs to stay on for easy on/off ability. I had taken off 5 links on the second day as one of the reviews had suggested a snug fit however she actually started pulling again. Seems to work best when they really can’t otherwise feel it and then get the gentle reminder as it tightens.

Prong/pinch collars allow for more controlled, safer walking for you and your dog. Choke chains alone cause significant damage to the dog's throat/neck. The prong should always be used WITH a choke in case the prong comes lose so you have a back-up.
Our trainer recommended it years ago for our Alaskan Husky who pulled so hard he gave me shin splints. He recommended it again when we brought our German Shepherd in for training. Necropsies show no damage to dogs collared with prongs vs. those collared with chokes alone.

I have three dogs, (2 pit bulls and a shar-pei mix) and this is the ONLY thing I will use when taking them outside. I have tried regular collars, and choke chains but this is the only thing that makes me feel like I have 100% full control over my dogs. The only con is sometimes people tend to think the dogs are "mean" because the appearance isn't quite welcoming but it's really not a big deal.

I have a 10 month 40lb Husky very strong and loves his walks. Problem with this collar is when he gets excited with seeing other animals mainly squirrels he darts for them regardless of the collar. He has broke free twice because of the clasp, it can get caught in a spot where it will open when forced. Both times I was lucky to get him back with a treat as were near traffic. I would not recommend this collar for a Husky or any real strong puller. Buy the one without the clasp. You put it on by removing a link and then snapping it back in place.

my shorkie ( yorkie mix shitzu) has mastered the walk. She walks beside me at all times, and knows to sit when we come across the end of the side walk. How ever, every time she would see a dog, she would go into alert mode. Not because she wanted to attack the other dogs, but rather sniff them and such. she dint care about the collar corrections, and this made it annoying for me, so I went to get this, and I'm glad I did. After buying this, I put it on her and went for our normal walk, when I saw her ears perk up, I corrected her as fast as possible. She did a small yelp and put her ears back into a normal position. Then, we tried walking next to other dogs, and she dint react! we still need to practice this, but I can feel a big difference. I am also happy to say that this collar is not a 'bad' collar. If you feel uncomfortable about this collar, think about it this way: a pack leader would 'bite' the neck in wear the prong collar is being placed. the collar is basically mimicking a dog bight from the pack leader. Never get this device to punish the dog. Us this as a training tool to redirect the dogs energy.

After reading several reviews I decided to try this product with my 110 lb Mastiff puppy. I was previously using a traditional choke chain which she pulled against constantly and made walking somewhat difficult for both of us. After a few minutes of her getting used to this collar it was like walking a completely different dog.
This collar works and I would highly recommend it to anyone who has an excited dog during walks.

Onyx
Bought this collar for my 1.5 year old and 95.1 lbs black Labrador. He is my 1st dog, has lots of energy and is excited by nature. Onyx is stronger then me and can easily drag me down the street. The only way I could exercise him using a regular nylon collar was tying the leash to my bike and ride faster then he could pull the bike. The prong collar worked beautifully, he was calmly walking by me, my hands and arms don't hurt anymore and I don't need to run to catch up with him. I finally am in control of my dog. The snap-on is a "must have", the links are not that easy to add/remove, specially on the dogs neck. During my research I learned that a prong collar should snug fit, should be close to the head (behind ears, under the jaw line) and if it hangs down the neck it won't work properly. So check for instructions if it's your first time. I bought the 22" because his collars are usually size 26", but in the end I had to remove 5 links in order to fit in the right position.
Pros: it works
Cons: looks like a torture device

It is great. My puppy choked herself until she passed out with a regular collar but this keeps her from hurting herself like that. I would recomend it to anyone with a stubborn or willful dog who pulls on walks.

From the very first second I put this on my dog it corrected the pulling problems that I had with him. This thing is worth every penny. It looks like a torture device, but it's not. I did a lot of research before purchasing this collar and I also put it on my calf to test it and it was not painful at all.

My Dane w/ the Prong Collar On
Great Training Aid/Tool for any dog if used PROPERLY. Not cruel or painful for pet. Try placing your own arm in it and give it a tug. I love the fact that you can add links to these types of collars. I have a Dane, which did grow 5lbs a WEEK. So by being able to add links to the collar as he grew it saved me a lot of money. Sometimes a pain getting the collar on and off of animal.

Sturdy collar that works how it should. Unlike some brands that will come apart I've never had one of these collars come off. The quick release clip gets stuck sometimes so getting on/off can be a little time consuming. You can remove some of the links for a custom fit. All in all a great collar for training.
