Raccoons not a problem,
September 7, 2009
by SeanC
from Felton, CA
"We've recently moved house and will be buying another Cat Mate electromagnetic door for our new home. We moved to the Santa Cruz mountains three years ago (lot's of coyotes and raccoons in the area) and wanted our cats to come and go as they please. I shopped around online and found Cat Mates were available locally. Our landlord worked with us, installing the Cat Mate in a french door by replacing one of the glass panes with a Cat Mate installed into a piece of plywood. I had to build 'kitty ramps' on both sides of the french door so their collar/magnet was high enough to trigger the door mechanism but it worked just fine. We never had any break-ins although we saw a raccoon checking out the flap one night. One of our cats is a great hunter and he could get in through the Cat Mate even with a large gopher in his mouth blocking the magnet on his collar."

Works just fine,
August 15, 2009

"When I found a strange cat in my kitchen eating my cat's food, I wanted an electronic pet door NOW! I liked that I was able to go on line, research the product and then run down to the nearest store (Tukwila, WA) and find it. I could see what the reviewer who said the magnet has to be lined up with the door just right was talking about. There isn't much of a sensitivity range for the sensors - the collar magnet needs to be within inches of the sensors. At first my cat, who is used to a non-electronic door (which some neighborhood cats had figured out and hence the reason why I bought this product) bonked her head on the door as it wouldn't open. I was afraid I might have to take it back to the store, but after a few tries, she figured out how to work the door and uses it like a pro. I haven't had any stray cats in since I installed this door. It was exactly the same size as the 4-way cat flap it replaced - and it's only half the cost or less of the infra red or RFI types"

Useless against racoons,
September 6, 2008
by marcq
from Cincinnati
"I installed this door in order to keep out some raccoons. The raccoons defeated the door within 45 minutes of it's installation. The design defect is that the electormagnetically controlled latch only keeps the door flap from being pushed toward the enterior of the house. Any animal with claws can grasp the rim of the door flap and open it to the outside. In some ways I can understand why the designer would want a door that would allow an animal inside the house to exit without having a magnetic collar, but if the door worked properly there wouldn't be any animals in the house without a magnetic collar. This door may work against neighborhood cats, but if raccoons are your problem I'd look into a different product."

"My two cats love the cat door. I have had no problems with installation or in teaching my cats to use it. This is our first door, both cats have had no problems getting in and out. The door should be mounted as per the instructions, with the bottom at the cats chest height, That way when they stick their heads in from outside the magnet is in the proper position to unlock the door. We recently had to make a trip out of town for 10 days with no time for a sitter, we put down plenty of food and water and prayed. On our return one cat was in and the other was on the porch. The water and food held up and the litter box had NOT been used. Perhaps this is the greatest benefit of the door, both of my cats prefer to "go" outside and the door permits them to go when they want, without waking me in the middle of the night. This is a great door for the price and I would recommend it to anyone."

One Year And Still Going......,
September 23, 2007
by MarkAgain
from Tampa Bay, FL
"I just replaced the first battery, It's been a year and the door still does it's job. Period. Yes, getting the magnet to hang down on the collar is a challenge but the bottom line is the door is durable- mine's mounted in a metal door and no rain gutter over my entrance so it gets soaked at times and other than cleaning out the inside where the battery goes once in a while I've had to do nothing. Once my cat got used to it- I did have to shove him through a few times to teach him- he's had no problems until now when the battery died- after almost a year. I don't know what others problems are but I endorse this door 100% It's not hard to install (take the door OFF the frame so you can work with it), it does it's job, I've yet to have a break-in racoons included, and after a year it's still working and I've got it in the worst possible conditions rain and dirt wise. What else is there really to say?? Other than make sure it's mounted high enough and maybe having to hang the magnet down on the collar won't even be an issue. I have a pretty good step down so I had to mount mine a little low. Probably too low in hindsight. But it does work and my cat uses it no problems. Good Luck"

Don't buy this magnetic pet door!,
March 26, 2007
by Deee
from Bay Area, CA
"The instructions for installing it was ok. Some of the bit sizes for screw holes were off. As for the working door its self... The magnet on the collar has to line up just right for the door to unlock. I was showing my cat how to go through the door and kept pushing him into the door and the magnet on the collar didn't trigger to unlock the door. I took off the collar and tested it again with out the poor cat. I found the magnet on the collar had to be very very close; almost touching the floor of the cat door for the lock to unlock."

"This cat door is overall a good one. The magnetic doors work a lot better than the infra-red. I found with the infra-red didnt pick up the little signal it sends out. The only downside to the magnetic one is that it is hard to find and order new magnets."

Sturdy, Stylish, and DOES WORK,
December 23, 2006
by CatDude
from Bradenton, FL
"Bottom Line: my cat got used to it, no break in's, and it works. Installation and how you mount the collar has everything to do with it.
Follow the instructions. Period. Don't install unit too low as the magnet needs to be around and inch above it's plastic shelf, where the sensors are, for the easiest use for your cat. And either have your cat's collar real loose so the magnet hangs down, or suspend it like I did with the collars own metal loop for the excess collar- and adding a second loop from an extra collar, then using a hair wider than 1/8" nylon zip ties to hang the magnet from the loops. I Kept the zip ties a little loose and it's worked out perfectly.
I found that just sliding the magnet on the collar itself kept it too tucked up into the bottom of his neck.
Truly, like the instructions say, if it's installed too low there will be problems.
It took a few days for my cat to get used it though he's been using cat doors for ten years. Between the clear, but tinted plastic flap (so visibility is different at different times day/night and lighting conditions) as my cat likes to be able to see what's on the other side before going through, and the magnetic latch which is very quiet but does have a slight click none the less, it took some time for him. But he got it.
Like I said- no break ins, and it works. We have not only my landlord's six cats, a huge, mean stray, but raccoons and possums as well.
And It's probably just my cat- he fiddles around the shelf when coming in, so the magnetic latch does a bit of opening and closing before he finally get's himself in. I found I needed to change the battery after about a month.(non-alkaline) Not because he couldn't get back in, I just noticed the magnetic field had weakened when I observed him trying to come back in one day. For a normal unfinnicky cat it probably won't be an issue.
I also have a metal door and it does work with it. Between what was available to me for use it came down to the infra-red Staywell, which ended up feeling as flimsy as read about, ie: possible to break in, and apparently it's machanism is quite loud- and the Cat-Mate. I have no regrets with the Cat-Mate. It's made very well and with some attention to install/collar it works."

I Guess You Get What You Pay For,
October 11, 2006
by lindaT

"This seems to be a relatively inexpensive door by electronic pet door standards. I thought I was getting a bargan but, you do get what you pay for, an inexpensively made, poorly sealed, lower quality unit. Guess I can't complain but my kitty does!"
