How did I live without it before?, July 26, 2008
by kittyPlay from SF, Sunny California

"My cats and I love, love, LOVE this water fountain. They both drink a lot more water and maintenance is so easy for me. I love knowing that the water is always circulating and freshly filtered. Makes my busy life that much simpler.

I've used the original version before getting this "platinum" version and I can say that this one is quieter (thanks to the submerged motor) and much easier to take apart to clean. Not only does it have less parts, the motor is super easy to remove now--it is kept in place by suction cups. No more prying and twisting and cursing just to get the motor loose. This water fountain is just an ingenious device, perfectly thought out.

In terms of looks and functionality, the platinum, as compared to the original, is taller so the waterfall starts higher so my adult cat doesn't have to crouch as much to drink from the "spout". The lid fits firmly with a snap so the kitties can't remove it. Also, I don't know if they use a different plastic or perhaps a different finish (purely speculating here), but this one seems to deter slimy buildup much better.

The extra water reservoir fits neatly on the back and even comes with a concave groove for easy carrying. The screw-on lid for the reservoir comes with a simple but clever stopper to block water from leaking while carrying and aligning it to put in place. No water spillage.

My cats and I LOVE this platinum water fountain!!! If anything were to happen to it, I'd buy another one in a split second. I wouldn't even have to think about it."

Excellent Product - Great, August 6, 2009
by HeatherAdair from Central VA

"I have a younger cat in kidney failure who is VERY picky about his water. He wants it fresh, fresh, fresh! I'm constantly replacing his water so that he'll stay hydrated which is vital to a cat in his condition. I worried about buying this product, because he's scared to death of drinking out of a sink…especially with the water running. Well, I bought it anyway. Came home, set it up (reasonably easy), and turned it on. He was drinking out of it within 30 seconds! I love it!!! I no longer have to replace his water every hour. He'll drink out of it anytime and seems to be much happier. I have 3 cats so water tends to go fast. This thing has a VERY large capacity which is great!"

"I love this, my cats love this. They drink more water now than with a standard bowl. However, I only give it 4 stars b/c sometimes the dish overflows. I'm starting to think it does this when the valve that leads to the filter gets clogged, so the water can't recirculate. Even so, I would still highly recommend."

They keep breaking, July 19, 2009
by menageriemommy from Idaho

Cons: water quits flowing out, break within a months time

"This is the third one I bought and it too has BROKEN! I think I'll quit wasting my money on this brand and try another. What happens is the water slows to a trickle until it just stops all together, it takes about a month. I change the filter, clean and rinse it out weekly. I use filtered tap water the same that we drink. Frustrating situation as well as a waste of money.
This morning the cats had pulled the fountain into the middle of the kitchen floor in protest. They were sitting around it waiting for water to come out and looking up at me...but it was cute sorta! Anyway I am off to order a fountain of some sort but.... NOT 'Drinkwell""

Loving it so far!, July 8, 2009
by Heath345 from New Brunswick, Canada

Pros: capacity, little to no noise

"I've used several other water fountains for my cats, and while they worked well (sometimes!), they did not hold much water and I encountered other problems with noise and the pumps not working 100% properly.

I set up the Drinkwell Platinum and so far, my little guys love it. They have been fascinated by the free flowing water - so much so that it seemed to take them a bit to figure out this was to drink and not just play in.

Very little to no noise, easy set up and I love that the reservoir has a wide-mouthed lid and is big enough to put ice cubes into to keep water cool. We love it so far!"

Love this fountain, May 13, 2009
by KIMO from Scottsdale, AZ

Pros: quality, well thought out
Cons: i wish it came in other colors, large

"Inititally I bought the Freshflow pet fountain which was highly rated as well but, I didn't like that for a few reasons. The water resevoir had to be filled up daily, the flow valve kept coming off the pump and it had to be cleaned often due to slime build-up.
I returned the Freshflow fountain and bought this Petmate Platinum fountain. I love it because, the resevoir is very large, it's quiet, for some reason it doesn't really get slime build-up, the filters are bigger and better and the flow valve is connected, also it has a screen surrounding the flow valve so stray food that is dropped in the water doesn't get sucked into the pump. Also, it has a two part cord, so when you do clean it you don't have to deal with the heavy plug AND the fountain. It's a quality and well thought out product.
I also bought a wheatgrass pod by Petmate that attached to the bowl, it's been a week and the grass is growing and my cats are enjoying a fresh treat!"

Cats like it, March 18, 2009
by GaryW from Rochester NY

"I got one of these for my three cats about 2 months ago. One cat in particular is fascinated by running water and was frequently in the sink licking the faucet. She would also put her front paws in the water bowl and drag it around, frequently spilling it. Now she usually drinks from the top of the fountain and frequently puts her paw in the stream so that it splashes in the bowl portion. One of the other cats also usually drinks from the top and sometimes plays with the water. My third cat usually ignores the stream and uses it like a standard water bowl. None of the cats seemed to be hesitant to drink from it.

The fountain is fairly quiet although you may have to adjust the stream volume. Placing it on a soft surface also cuts the noise.

Cleaning the unit is mostly easy. The pump is slightly harder to clean and has a couple of small parts. The impeller, wich is held in magnetically, can be a little hard to remove if you don't have long fingernails.

The reservoir is easy to fill. It is less likely to drip on the floor if you carry it to the fountain with the fill hole down."

The Best Investment in My Pet's Health, February 27, 2009
by FourCs from Bellingham, WA

"My cat Cody suffers from Triple Phosphate Crystals in his urine. He is on a special food from his vet but he was still urinating around the house. We got this fountain for our pets this past Christmas and it took them about a day to get used to it but now they all are drinking lots more water (my cat Chester who refused to drink out of the bowl on the floor - we had to buy a special bowl to put on the table for him - is drinking out of it). This was the best $70 I've ever spent. It is super easy to clean and maintain. I strongly recommend this product to anyone with pets.
Cody is also not urinating around the house anymore!"

Love it! Great for multi-cat households!, January 24, 2009
by Evboobear from Corpus Christi, TX

"I currently own two of these fountains and so far I have been very impressed with the quality and durability. I have a total of 6 cats plus 1 that I occasionally catsit, and all have increased their water intake significantly. I have mostly neutered males and feed mainly dry food so it is very important for them to drink enough water. I also use filtered water in the fountains to avoid the calcium buildup (I fill up empty gallons at the Watermill.)

Pros:
--Low hum is barely noticeable
--Large water capacity
--Easy to refill
--Prefilter catches most of the debris before it reaches the filter
--Water won't overflow

Cons:
--Every nook and cranny must be cleaned

I highly recommend this product! :)"

"While this does the job of being a water dispenser for our cats, it does have some flaws. The reservoir has to be turned upside down to fill up and then turned right side up to replace. It can never be done w/o making spills. Plus, there's supposed to be a regulating system so that it doesn't fill too much or get down too low. This keeps the water at the brim of the fountain at all times. Obviously, this doesn't work correctly. We had the original Drinkwell Fountain, and we (kitties included) didn't have a problem w/ it. This is a case of just because something appears to be better, doesn't mean it is."

Drinkwell Platinum Pet Fountain, December 26, 2008
by cmStephensen from Reno, NV

Pros: quiet, easy enough assembly
Cons: filter supposed to be changed every few weeks, needs to be cleaned once a week

"You can purchase at the store instead of "web only" like it says. Pretty easy to assemble. Impressively quiet!! Only had it for a few days, the cats seem to be ok with it, though I've only seen 1 of 2 actually drinking from the fountain. Recommended in directions to clean once a week. This could be tedious since there is so much to take apart.

I'm really impressed that it is so quiet."

Hillarious fun, October 27, 2008
by SuziQue from Texas

Pros: quiet, easy to maintain, cats love it
Cons: needs to hold about 10 more gallons :d

"My baby cat loves it. I think he drinks from it just to play most of the time. He tries to hit the water stream. My older cat drinks from the stream only so it splashes against the little aerating surface and sprinkles her paws. She'll pick them up, and move them away from the splashes -while- she's drinking so it looks like she's dancing with her front paws when she drinks."

All 3 cats hated this item!, October 17, 2008
by mamaof3cats from Greenville, SC

Pros: none
Cons: cats hate it

"I have 3 cats who all love to drink either from the sink or bathtub faucet! I decided to purchase this fountain to help one of my cats who has had recurrent bladder crystals and the vet suggested getting a fountain to increase water intake. Even after a week, NONE of my cats will use this fountain! The cat that I bought this for in particular loves to have me wash him in the tub with a hand-held shower massager and then drinks water from that--even puts his face in under the water as it sprays him. I thought the fountain would be a sure thing-especially for him--BIG LET DOWN! I am going to return it ASAP!"

A great addition, September 30, 2008
by coolparkolay from Lemasters, PA

"I bought the Drinkwell Platinum water fountain for my 4 cats and large German Shepard. My one cat would not drink water unless it was running so this choice was a no brainer. Now she drinks all the time and is social again. It holds enough water for two days in my house and cleans up well. I do not notice a slimy feeling ever and it is extremely quiet, unless it’s low on water, which is my queue. I do get a small amount of water under the base of the unit but I am unable to determine where it comes from. I can't tell if it is the fountain, however it is a small pool so it does seem to indicate that it is the fountain. That said it was a great price after coupons and Petsmarts price matching. All my animals are happy which is all I need."

Excellent Product, September 21, 2008
by Calait from Toronto, ON

"I purchased this filter for Scully, my eleven year old cat. We'd moved to a new apartment a month ago. He'd taken some time to adjust to the apartment, including the fact that we weren't looking forward to running the water in the bathtub to give him a drink. I searched for a running-water style water fountain, and found this product. It is an excellent product, and set my mind at ease. In fact, he drinks more water now than he used to! I have recommended this product to several friends at my office, a few who have more than one cat. If your cat resists water in a dish, this product will eliminate that worry."

Great value, July 28, 2008
by Kittylea from Ontario, Canada

"I bought this fountain after my 1 of my 3 cats was diagnosed with FLUTD and our vet recommended getting a fountain to incourage her to drink more water. This fountain is actually the cheapest fountain I could find that looked high quality. After buying it, it took her a couple of days to get used to the noises and then she started to drink tons of water. I haven't had any more litterbox issues since.

Unfortunaltly the fountain motor broke in under a years time. Even with regular washing as the instructions suggested it still died. After this fountain I moved on and tried another brand of cat fountain.

I still give this fountain 4 stars overall because it still saved me lots of money in vet bills and was a great way in getting my cats to drink more while it lasted."

Our cats LOVE it... and a lifesaver for one cat!, July 11, 2008
by pumpkinsmybaby from IL

"If your cats love to drink running water from the sink, this is a sure bet! After playing with the 3 water fountains at the store (Original Drinkwell, Platinum Drinkwell, and CatIt), I decided on the Platinum. The CatIt was rejected as both the Petsmart sales associate and I found it nearly impossible to pull apart the CatIt dome for cleaning. The original Drinkwell is good, but it's missing the pre-pump plastic filter, which was added to the Drinkwell Platinum. The plastic pre-filter is great as it removes all cat hair or stray cat food BEFORE it can get caught in the pump, and it is very easy to slide out and rinse off while the pump is still running. The original Drinkwell was also rejected as the expandable reservoir, which increases capacity from 50 oz to 100 oz, is not dishwasher safe, while the Platinum reservoir is dishwasher safe (no melting even on my bottom rack), and capacity is 168 oz.

Both cats used this fountain on very the first day, and drink so much more water that shows up in the litter box waste. They no longer beg from the bathroom sink... unless Drinkwell's in the dishwasher. It's great for the cat's health, especially my hyperthyroid baby with kidney disease. She was losing weight and would hardly eat as the thyroid medication was hard on her stomach... until we bought this fountain. Now she can drink to her heart's content, and she's eating normally once again! This was a lifesaver! They both enjoy this fountain so much, and cry when it's in the dishwasher. They no longer want to drink out of a dish, so I'll have to get another one of these to alternate while one's in the dishwasher.

You can clean these by hand, but I prefer to sanitize weekly in the dishwasher as I get a lot of slime buildup with 2 cats. Slime is bacteria. The charcoal filter, like filters for fish tanks, removes chemical impurities, but only for up to a few weeks depending on water quality. I find that the charcoal filter gets the same bacterial slime buildup as the rest of the fountain, which is great for a fish tank filter, but probably not so great for cats. I rinse the charcoal filter each week, and replace it every other week due to slime buildup. We have whole-house filtered well water. While the fountain is in the dishwasher each week, I take the pump apart, and clean thoroughly with soapy water, using the small brush from the optional kit to clean inside the impeller opening, as it gets the same slime buildup. One week, I didn't clean either the fountain or pump, and only rinsed and refilled the reservoir once with water. The next week, there was a thick, horribly smelly brown slime that had risen into the clean water reservoir with the bubbles as the fountain draws water. Yuck! Now I thoroughly clean the fountain and pump every week. It only takes 2 minutes to pull apart and throw into the dishwasher, and 2 minutes to reassemble and fill with a pitcher of water. The pump takes just a few more minutes to clean by hand.

The ONLY problem I have with this fountain is the reservoir design. The reservoir top is rounded for appearance, but when you remove it and flip it over to rinse and refill in the sink, you have to hold it in your hands, which is a bit heavy for me. It would be nice if it had a flat top, like the original Drinkwell reservoir, so that it could rest in the sink while filling. The bottom cap unscrews easily for filling, but the reservoir bottom is flat, which makes it very difficult to clean by hand, even with the optional drinkwell brush kit. It's hard to bend the large brush to get into the bottom corners. In the dishwasher, the reservoir is too tall for the top rack, and the flat reservoir bottom accumulates dirty dishwasher rinse water, which is hard to knock out completely. It would be nice if the reservoir bottom was slightly angled into the opening so that remaining water could be completely removed, like the design of the original Drinkwell reservoir. Other than that, it works great, and our cat's are happy and healthy too!"

"It's hot! I wanted my Maine Coon to have fresh, cool, clean water while I was at work. This is it!

Wonderful product. It has increased the amount of water my kitten drinks from the first day!

The water stay cleaner because of a charcoal filter. There is plenty of water with a reserve. It stays cool because of continuous circulation.

It is no trouble to clean. Excellent buy."
