After many issues with our bio wheel, must husband and I decided to go with the Aquaclear 50 on our 20 gal tall. We were having some issues with cloudy water, and after water tests, we found we were having an ammonia issue. We put in the ammo rid insert, as well as started the tank on Stability, and it worked like a charm! The tank is crystal clear and ammonia is in check. In addition to these two products, I got a turkey baster (brand new-not used) and use it to suck out old food particles every couple of days. Its made a tremendous impact on our tropical community tank. The only downside I saw was that it was not clear on where to put it in the filter basket other than in the middle. We put ours on top of the carbon insert but below the biomax bag.

Did not work for me.

I bought two of these and neither one worked :(
I left the first one in for about a week to see if it would "kick in" after a while, no luck.
I did a complete water change, changed out the insert with a new one and made sure ammonia was 0.
The next day my ammonia level was >0.25.
I have a 10 gallon tank with only one betta.

I contacted Hagen Customer Service and they were less than helpful :(

Ammonia problem

I have been using two aquaclear 70s in my 55 gallon and an aquaclear 20 in my 10 gallon tanks and I was having ammonia problems, I tried ammonia reducers and it would get it close to good but still dangerous. Talked to the petsmart staff and he recommended swapping out the top portion of the aquaclear media with the ammonia removing and within hours my tanks were perfect again! Great product!

Pros: cheap!

Cons: should come standard with the aquaclears.
