This thing for a 29 gallon tank is a BAD buy. Took an hour to figure out at still wont work. If your looking for a product to put out fot the trash, this is the product for you.:)

Depending where and how high your tank is, the hose can be too short. My tank sets in a wall opening and the tank is higher up than me. I step on a step ladder to clean but this hose is too short to reach the bucket without water going all over the floor. I just wish the hose was at least 10 feet. I think they do this so you have to buy the extension hose. Also it pumps up too much gravel when it does pump. I found it easier to scoop out some of the gravel with a plastic soup spoon, rinse through a strainer and replace back in the tank. So much easier than fighting with this pump.

I struggled with it for a while when I brought it home it wouldn't do anything until I read another review on here realizing I wasn't doing something right. I wasn't submerging the pump and it works now.

It works. It's simple. And it's pretty inexpensive. Check YouTube for videos on how to start the siphon. The shaking up and down method doesn't work for me. I insert the tube with the open end up so it fills with water. Then raise it up out of the water so the water starts to flow. Before all of the water flows out of the hard plastic end, quickly submerged it again, then invert it.

My only problem with this device was my fault, I guess. I was cleaning it and shook it hard to dislodge a piece of plant that was stuck in it. The end flew off and shattered like glass when it hit my deck. So, don't do that.

This vacuum will do the job but takes some time to get it started. To start the suction you have to shake it up and down fast and close to the gravel, which is expected but it takes a while to master. The bucket clip is very nice to have and adjustable on the hose making partial water changes quieter without as much splashing into the change bucket. The hose is decent and transparent so you can see what is being picked up. If you have an aquarium that is closer the the ground you may want to place something to keep the hose straight because if you do not hold the hose down or at least level the suction will stop causing you to have to get it started back up again.

I bought the large version of this and I was surprised how hard to get it started. You have to pump it up and down until it starts vacuuming. I don't like the idea on how to make it start because it disturbs the debris on the gravel or sand and you'll have them floating all over your tank. So a friend gave me her Biorb Siphon and cut the pump section and I attached it to my Hagen Siphon. It works perfectly and I don't have to worry about sore arms. Check out the photos. It has a scotch tape wrap because I accidentally stepped on it and made a big crack. It still works though.

I needed a gravel vaccum for my aquarium because I didn't have an algae eater, so I read the reviews and thought, ok sounds good. Next day I bought it and came home to clean my aquarium. I followed all the directions and it took me almost 3 hours to clean my aqurium and it is only 1.5 gallons. Can you believe that? I finally stayed up the rest of my saturday night scooping up nasty water that the vaccum sturred around. Unfortunately, I couldn't return it because they said I "misused it". I have decided to get an algae eater instead. No more Havel gravel vaccums for me. : (

Cons: not so quick start, poor quality

This product works well. But since this was a new gravel cleaner since we needed one, but the instructions were not all that great. It just said pump the thing up and down and I'm working away and it's just not working. I finally look at YouTube for some help and it shows me everything. Debris is a thing of the past now. Until I forget again.

Pros: works great!, the pipe doesn't get clogged

This gravel vacuum is very effective and efficient, making cleaning/water changing a breeze! Just make sure the bucket clip is securely fastened to your bucket; it may slip off if you don't get it on there securely. But if you double check that before you being siphoning, this tool makes maintenance easy!

This product works great for smaller tanks from 15 to 30 gallons and very fast (used a 5 gal bucket). I use a siphoning setup to do my 60 gal tank because it vacuums and fills it as well. I choose the Hagen over the other vacuums because the Hagen's tube was smaller in diameter which worked around plants and rocks easier.

Pros: great for smaller tanks

Cons: the bucket clamp doesn't fit all buckets

This works pretty well but things keep getting stuck in the siphon and I'm unable to remove them with ease since this siphon doesn't give you the option to easily remove the tube or to remove the filtering grate on the inside.

So if you have a tank with substrate that isn't aquarium gravel, and if you have plants, you'll get pieces of plants and substrate stuck in the grate and blocking the water flow.

This product is AWESOME! Unlike any gravel vacuum ever. It thoroughly cleans the gravel and sucks up the debris, NOT the gravel. It even has a gravel guard inside the tube to make sure gravel does not go in. The bucket clip is handy to keep the hose in place, too. I haven't tried turning the flow on/off with it yet, I was too amazed by how well it was doing its job. It is totally worth the money! Buy it! With this vacuum, my water changes take under 10 minutes, sometimes under 5. ^_^

My overall review of this particular product was very easy. This thing is great! My tank is at eye-level so when I clean it I have to climb on a stepstool. It amazed me that this thing was so easy to use. I was mostly impressed with the suction against gravity. Outstanding! There was no problem pulling out unwanted sediment and leaving the gravel. I would absolutely recommend this to one of my friends. Thanks.

I have one of these for each of my 4 tanks with different substrates. It really works well. It is so much easier to start than all the other gravel vacuums I've used over the years. The only problem I've had is when using it to just suck the water out of a tank with sand in it, the sand gets in the tube and it the easy start feature doesn't work, but after rinsing the sand out, it works great again.

For the most part, the Hagen Gravel Vacuum works as advertised. It seems almost magical after years of using finicky traditional gravel filters: Put the end in the tank, pump it up and down a couple times, and the syphon starts.
No wet hands, no fish nibbles, no terrifying your fish with repeated attempts to start the syphon.
The big disappointment is in the hose clamp they include. It's supposed to clip onto your bucket, keeping the drain hose in place and allowing you to shut the flow off completely.
In reality, neither of those functions of the clamp works: It doesn't hold the hose at all when the clamp is in the "open" position, and water still streams out like mad in the "off" position.
