I have a German shepard and this crate works great, she loves it, I had another crate that I always had to work to get her in but this one she seems to enjoy, its light weight, but sturdy, it cleans easily and is large enough for a dog her size! Great Product! Looks sharp too!

Quality and consistency needs improvement.

June 21, 2012
by AsiaShep

It's an attractive crate in the grey tone coated paint, but the quality and consistency of them need to be addressed. I've gotten Midwest brand crates in the past and have had a lot of imperfections on almost all of them. I've ordered I think 3 so far in the last few years of this Select model and the doors were not made to fit evenly so they can be taken off and put back on easily without adjusting them myself. Consumers should not have to do that. One had significant bent wires on the bottom and another one had a wire that was broken or not attached firmly. Midwest needs to address good quality work and craftsmanship in all the individuals that manufacture or make their wire dog crate products. Also maybe the care in the shipping and handling of their products may need to be addressed as well.

We purchased the GIANT 48'Lx30W for my Chinese Shar Pei Mona (who, might I remind you is 42 LBS.). It now has several holes in the metal, where she forcefully used her face to escape. this is NO joke. I posted a pic of the crate to show what damage was done. The right side was completely ruined, so we put the divider in front of it, so that she couldn't get out. Today was the first day she successfully rammed through both barriers. If you have a calm dog this crate is perfect and fashionable, it look great! The 3 doors are very convenient, and it makes things easier sometimes. However if your dog is anything like Mona, and they find a way to unlock the bottom latch every time (that's right folks....UNLATCH!) than this isn't the best choice. So all and all it is NOT the crate for me, and if your dog happens to be Houdini (like mine) that it's NOT the crate for you either. If you have a calm mannered dog, you're in the clear.

We got this crate for our rottweiler puppy. The plastic floor doesn't clip in place and he chewed it to teeny bits at about 5 months old and 40 or so pounds. A replacement floor is $40 plus shipping, and you can only get plastic, so it would be a waste since he'd chew a new one. The crate also doesn't stay together well, he can wiggle it around and make the side unfasten and squeeze out. Nobody gets any sleep at our house anymore because he only stays in the crate when he WANTS to be in there, not all night like he should. I would NEVER buy this crate again.
Cons: fragile, difficult to clean

I have this crate in the XL size for my dog. It is big enough that he can stand up and not hit his head. It was very easy to put together. My dog must be like Hudini, because he has been able to get out of it and hes 72 lbs. If he manages to release one of the latches on the door, he squeezes out! LOL
I fixed that problem by using lockable hooks from the hardware store, like what people use for keys and such.
My only complaint is I wish the plastic tray would be large enough to put the crate into. I know the tray is supposed to slide inside the crate, and it's for ease of cleaning, but, my dog has totally destroyed it. I am now getting a tray made of sheet metal that I can set his crate into so he can't destroy it.
Pros: price, comfortable, easy to assemble, easy to clean

I love this crate. I bought the 42" for my australian shepherd when I got him as a puppy. I used the divider when he was a puppy and moved it as he grew. The divider doesn't go all the way down to the tray so I would put a fleece blanket in the tray so my puppy didn't loose his chew toy to the other side of the crate under the divider while I was gone. My favorite thing about this crate is I travel with my dog alot and it is easy to breakdown and put in the car. When I get to my destination three doors allow me flexibility in where I need to place the crate. I have had this crate for a year now and it has held up to my heavy use. I am glad I got the 42", my aussie is 55 lbs now and loves that he has enough space to stretch out when he sleeps and just barely enough room to sit comfortable without having to duck or hit his head on the top. I put a pad in the bottome keep a piece of fleece drapped over the top and down the sides to give it a den feeling and would say my dog loves it since he will even go in there to take a nap while I am home.

I have a big boned, big meat 120 pound german shepherd and I am so thankful to have bought this crate. I looked all over. The price is great. I was asking myself how in the world am i going to fit my pony in a crate. We bought it when my shepherd was a puppy and separated the crate into a smaller section. He had plenty of room to grow. Thank goodness for this crate.!

I bought the 42" crate for my 60 lb Boxer/Shepherd mix. The sizing guide suggests the size smaller for this weight, but I'm glad I sized up. I love the 3 doors on this crate. It allows me to place it lengthwise up against the wall, which is a great space saver. I can still let the dog out the side door, which is now the front I guess. It affords a lot of options when it comes to placing it around the house.
My only complaint is that some of the bars came bent. One of the hooks that keeps the front panel in place was actually broken and the broken ends were coated in the paint (meaning it was broken during manufacturing and not during transit.) So quality control is not 100%, but I wasn't about to package the 45lb crate back up and bring it back to the store. The crate seems to function fine despite the fault. It has even more hooks than my previous crate, which my dog was able to pull the panels down and escape from, so I use locks through the hooks anyway.
Despite not coming in perfect condition, I still really like this crate. It looks relatively nice, and it feels sturdy. Ultimately, the 3 doors just can't be beat. I'd buy this crate again even if it still came slightly damaged - it's that convenient.
Pros: 3 doors
Cons: heavy

After putting the crate together I noticed some of the wires were bent already. Then when I tried to close the latches, they wouldn't match up, so I had to lift up on the door and then slide them over. The latch does not slide very easy either. It's just too much drama on the first day. I'm taking it back!

Our Miniature Schnauzer puppy loves her crate. She took to it within minutes of bringing her home, and it is definitely her den. The first week or so we kept two of the doors open and she would walk in one door and out the other during her play time. Now we keep one door open during play time and she goes in and out to retrieve favorite toys.
Pros: easy to move around the house.
Cons: divider was hard to put in; a very tight fit.

I bought the 48" crate for my mastiff puppy to grow into. Assembly was straightforward and quick. I love the convenience of having 3 door options; it gives me more versatility in how and where I place such a huge kennel in my home. The divider is great for a growing puppy, or if you want to keep two pets separated in the crate (each with its own door!).
Tip: I do recommend placing a bathtowel underneath the plastic pan to keep it from clanging against the bottom wire panel. It reduces noise.
Overall, both my pup and I are very happy with this crate!

We bought the 36" crate for our recently adopted 1yo corgi and he loves it! He has some anxiety issues so when looking at crates we were mainly concerned about how he would adjust to the crate and whether it would keep him secure when left alone. We're so happy we chose this crate. The three doors made his acceptance of the crate very easy - leaving the doors open not only allows him to wander in and out to explore it without feeling trapped, but when first introducing him to the crate we found it useful to be able to sit at one door and ask him to come to us by entering through another door, then reward him while he was in the crate. Within the first day, he was happily choosing to take naps in it, and by the end of the weekend he could be left alone in it for several hours without any problems. Assembling the crate was fairly easy but we did have some problems getting the top to sit in the way the instructions specified. I also sometimes wonder if he could push the latches up and over with his nose if he REALLY wanted to get out, but so far that hasn't been a problem at all - he seems really content to be in there playing with his toys. Great product!

I purchased one of these crates for my French Bulldog. I couldnt be happier with the ease of assembly and quality of the product. My dog loves being able to enter and exit through the multiple doors, I believe he feels safe, without the confindment of a single door model. I leave it open throughout the day so he can have his own space when he wants to take a break from all the activity in my home. I was so please with this products quality, plus its affordability that I have purchased one for my other dog. After seeing how my dogs love them, there is no other crate I would purchase. You cant go wrong with this one!

I have 2 bull mastives and when I would leave them at home they would rip apart everything in sight. The vet said that they had seperation issues. After I bought them kennels they spend all of there free time in them. One of them refuses to eat anywhere but in her kennel! This is one of the best things I have ever done for my dogs. Now each of them has their own "room".

The three door design is great, especially if you have limited space. There are plenty of options for how to situate the crate within a room.
We've travelled with it, and it lies quite flat in the trunk and is fairly easy to assemble and take down (just be careful not to pinch your fingers).
The doors come off and can be put back on easily. We leave the front door off when we're home so our dog can go in whenever she wants. She loves it!
If your dog is properly crate trained and does okay with confined areas, the crate is sturdy and the bars are a good thickness. I stack a lot of stuff on top of the crate without a problem.

We had been putting our puppy (basenji/rat terrier mix) in a pet taxi with the closed sides, and he would have a total fit in it as soon as we put him in it. He stays calmer in the cage, but we have found out that we need to keep him away from items he can pull into the cage and chew up (such as phone cords and newspapers, etc).

My husband and I bought the 48" crate so our 5 month old Shiloh Shepherd can grow into it. The crate is great!!! We started off with the divider in there, but our Shiloh is crate trained, so we recently removed it.
I have two small issues with the crate.
1) the crate wasn't as easy to put together as expected. I expected 1-2-3-done. We needed a little muscle hook the walls together.
2) When the dog is moving around in the cage, you hear every click and scratch from his claws or the banging from his collar. We didn't sleep well because the crate was in our bedroom and we didn't have a cushion in there while we were crate training him. Now that he's trained, we bought the Midwest Quite Time Kennel Bed. Definitely buy the pad.
