This substrate is ideal for maintaining a high PH. It is specifically blended for optimum chemical and biological balance. Also, helps to reduce nitrites, nitrates and ammonia spikes. The coral color is natural and it may require some rinsing to remove dust particles. I plan to buy more bags of coral for a 40 gallon aquarium. I recommend this product for aquariums requiring a high PH.

Be prepared to rinse a lot. I knew this before purchasing. I added a bag to an already established 55 gallon saltwater (fish and liverock/live sand) and was very happy with it. It has mixed well with the other crushed coral in the tank nicely. Because of my diligent rinsing the water was only mildly cloudy, and completely clear the next morning. A tip for new hobbyists: by rinsing one pound of gravel at a time, you'll save yourself time and backache. It will go faster than trying to rinse an entire bag all at once.

The gravel itself is good, but make sure you pay your water bill. Pre-washed is a lie. I had to take it back out of my tank because the sediment was so bad. It also has a lot of debris floating to the top that needed to be strained. I'll pay more for the better stuff next time some where else.

This stuff is great for a refugium it has enough surface area for micro algaes and bacteria to grow and catches any large debris that you have floating in the tank. Personally I would not use this directly in a reef aquarium because it is so course but would work great in a FOWLR. I did read on a previous review that it clouds the water and while I did have some minor clouding for about and hour it clears very rapidly...just be sure that you clean this first or if you can run it in a curing tank first this works even better, also putting this in the tank slowly after the water has been added will help prevent any clouding.

I use this in my tropical tank to keep the pH stable at neutral 7.5 for the two apple snails living in there.
Pros: looks nice, keeps ph stable

this substrate works REALLY well for fish that like a higher pH. The only drawback is that it WILL make your water really cloudy for at least 2 days.
