I love this filter! It's easy to clean, the filter replacements are cheap and easy to replace, and it keeps my water clean and my fish happy! Also, you can't beat the price! I would not recommend this for seriously overstocked tanks or tanks with small shrimp unless you plan on covering the filter intake.

Overall, this is a great filter and I wouldn't dream of replacing it unless something went wrong, in which case I would buy another 10i.

Bought the 40i for a 30g aquarium with two gold fish. Had to work within a budget, but wish I had waited till I could have afforded a canister (Ehiem).

Issues:
- filter pad does not lock in
- bio-screen does not lock into lock tabs of housing
- water goes directly up from pump and splashed water out the top of the unit and on to lid and floor
- water bi-passes under and over filter pad
- bio screen restricts flow through filter pad, and directs flow inefficiently
- had to heat housing and re-form it to get bio-screen to lock in
- had to make a foam lid/lock
- Bio-screen lacks surface area for build up of good bacteria
- could use a second suction cup on the housing to keep it in place on the glass
- when hanger is set to lowest position it exposes a hole in the housing that water jets out of
- too large inside the tank, and ugly

This filter does an exceptional job at keeping the tank clear and clean. I've used this in my 5 and 10 gallon tank for almost 3 years now. Having said that, the suction cup on the back has popped out of mine and rattles against the glass. That part drives me nuts. For the value, it's great, but it may be worth your time to invest in one that is a little sturdier.

This filter came as part of a 10 gallon starter kit. Is very quiet and easy to install and use. It The only drawback to it I find is that it is slightly bulky and the current it creates is so strong it will send my beta sailing across the tank.

I bought a 20g one for my 10g tank for my RES, worked perfectly, i then bought fish & decided to buy another filter but bought the 10g one, it didnt clean my 10g fish tank so good so i then switched the filters, after a while my 20g filter just stopped working & I threw out my box so i couldnt get a new one. Now my 10g filter is 'cleaning' my fish tank -___-

Buy A Better Filter For The Extra Ten Bucks. It Will Last Longer. I Can't Find Any More Cartridges For It Go I Used A Sponge. I Cut Off The Abrasive Side And Stuck It In. It Works Fairly Ok But I Still Had To Get Algae Eaters And Shrimp And A Crab.

I have been using this on all of my tanks except my fifty gallon for a long time. One of my main hobbies is taking care of my aquariums, which I am very proud of. I have one fifty gallon, three twenty gallons, one ten gallon, one five gallon (hospital tank) and a large pond outside full of comet goldfish. Point is, I have been doing this for a long time and tetra whisper has never failed me. It is quiet, strong (but no too strong), and keeps my tanks clean.

I have no complaints about this filter. I think it is perfect for all tanks from 10-40 gallons. I would strongly recommend this to anyone either starting an aquarium or with experience keeping fish.

i bought this filter for my 10 gal medication tank and i set it up just how the directions say to. And it won't come on after messing with it for about 20 mins i was very angry. Because getting to a petsmart isn't just down the street. I was in a hurry so i left to go to school. When i get home some 4 hours later it's working just fine. I tried to move it to the other side of the tank. And the only suction cup holding it in place comes off and after trying to put it back on. I broke the plastic hanger that goes over the side of the tank. Now i have to wrap a piece of bailing wire around it to keep it from falling into the water. And then after accidentally unplugging the cord i can't get it to start back again. And i can't return it because i was a day passed the 2 week limit.

This is just another bad product that petsmart put out.

Cons: hard to clean, didn't work

This filter has been in my 5Gal tank for a little over 7 months now. The tank has two male Betta fish, (The tank is divided in half by a mesh wall to prevent violence and stress for the fish). Setting up this filter took no more than thirty or fourty seconds. It's kept the tank clean along with weekly water changes and monthly cartridge changes. I have not had any problems and it runs very quiet. I don't recommend you use this product for water aeration, make sure you have a airstone or another method of oxygenation, but as far as filters go this is about the best one you can get for this price. Great as a secondary filter in a larger aquarium too.

Not to mention, the product also comes with the "bio scrubber" Which sits in the filter and cultivates aerobic bacteria (good bacteria) that helps maintain a healthy aquarium. I use this to scrub the decorations in the tank when i clean to help spread helpful bacteria, it also helps some bacteria stay in the filter when you change cartridges. Obviously this is a great added feature.

We got each of our kids starter kit aquariums. Their filters were easy enough to set up and quiet at first.

My son's lasted 2 weeks before it started making a grinding sound and barely moved any water. We had it replaced and THAT one lasted 3 weeks before the exact same thing happened.

My daughter's filter lasted 7 weeks before the familiar loud grinding noise began. As usual, there was almost no flow. Eventually, there was absolutely no flow and just a grinding sound.

We checked the filters meticulously. Each filter had been cleaned and had the carbon filter replaced. It did nothing to avert the exact same problem in each filter.

We went to another fish-oriented pet shop and got some inexpensive filters which have lasted over a year with no problems. The guys at the store said that these Whisper filters were so problematic and bad that they stopped selling them.

Some people may have been lucky with their filters, but the quality is simply garbage. Please save yourselves the headache and buy another brand.

My 10i filter functions perfectly in 3.5" of water for my Chinese water dragon's plastic water tub (16" x 22"). The water makes a nice waterfall, and the filter itself is silent. It also keeps the water crystal clear, but it cannot suck up floating debris (FYI, water dragon poo floats) or stuff that does not fit through the slats. However, this is good in a way because then the filter doesn't break or malfunction in some other way due to too much junk getting sucked into it. However, whatever the filter does not get can be scooped out with a fish net and disposed of, so it's not that big of a deal.
Also, as some other people said, the suction cup is necessary or else the filter won't stay upright. As for keeping it above the gravel, I have mine sitting on the bottom of the dish with river rocks around the base, which keeps the gravel away from the filter so it doesn't accidentally get sucked in.

I haven't had the need to clean it yet since I installed it last week, but the design of the filter makes it look quite easy to do. Also, even though the filter is big, it's sleek black exterior and nice-looking filter package look great. I recommend this product, just be sure to scoop out floating debris and material blocking the filter holes for amazingly clear water!

This filter is great!! I origanlly bought it for my 5 gallon tank. It was really like a whisper. At first, I though it wasnt working! It kept my tank nice and clean and the suctions cups really stuck on! When I had to transfer it to my 10 gallon tank, I had to pull really hard to get it off. It works in my 10 gallon tank too. It keeps the water crystal clear and is still a whisper. Its so worth the price.

This filter came with my 10 Gallon kit, and honestly at first, I did not expect good quality at all. I was just planning on using this as my back up, secondary filter for some extra filtration to my tank. But to my surprise, it performed very well for a kit filter. It is actually much more quiet than my main filter, which make this annoying rattling noise sometimes. This filter only makes a low volume humming sound that you would expect from a filter, but nothing more. It wouldn't keep you up at night. This filter performs pretty well, and it has a small space for filter media if you wish to use. Haven't experienced overflowing yet.
*Note: for those who say they experienced or is experiencing overflowing while using the filter, I'd recommend you to take out the cartridge and throw it out. Do yourself a favor and buy some real filter media like sponges or ceramic rings. They only cost less than $5 each and they last for more than 6 months to 1 year. Much cheaper than replacing your cartridge every 2-4 weeks, which doesn't actually do any good to your water quality and filtration. So please go out and buy a sponge or two, come ceramic rings, and you'd be much happier at fish keeping, saves you money, and less maintenance.

I got this filter with my first fish tank, and I'm still using it four years later! The flow isn't too strong (I've found that my bettas have actually enjoyed it!), it keeps the water clean, and refilling it is quick and easy. I plan on using these filters for a long time unless I happen to come across a better one.
