Garbage, October 13, 2009
by mamacat6 from NC

"I bought this product to use in my home for my 2 small kitties to have an escape from their bigger brothers. It took less than 5 minutes for my male cat to break through the first time. It now takes him all of 5 seconds. He is 10 pounds which is not unusually large. The only reason I didn't return it to get my $150 back (includes the second collar) is that I would have a hole in my door. This is suppose to be the best in the market!? I'm glad I don't need it to keep outdoor wildlife out."

A Questionable Expenditure ..., September 9, 2009
by Catmandu from Victoria BC

"We have had this door for over a yr. and a half ... In that time we have had to buy 5 new collars ( 3 for one cat and two for the other) and countless batteries.
If the door itself faces direct sunlight ( as our does ) it is given to activating on it's own.

The battery holders/sending units on the collars, are not water proof and in our experience.. are constantly getting moisture in them which causes corrosion... that in turn impedes their function and eventually kills the sending unit.

As the function becomes erratic, the poor cats are confused as they try to enter the house because it works sometimes and not others.. they are sometimes left outside unable to get into the house.
We bought this door to protect our cats and the house..

It cost a significant dollar to purchase and has kept costing us ever since."

wish it were better, August 18, 2009
by CatKeeper from Georgia - near Atlanta

Pros: fairly easy to install if you have the tools, works good if batteries work
Cons: not racoon proof, flimsy construction

"When finally my cats learned to get in I was very relieved and went away for a week. OK so far. Soon one cat lost the collar gadget. Then other cat's stopped working. Replaced everything and went away for 3 weeks. Disaster. Racoons and possums got in, busted door and that was it. I left the hole open and gave up.
I bought another type - magnet operated. Now I can tell you the comparison which is helpful, as this is a review about the battery type. Just using a magnet seemed a marvelous improvement - no batteries at all! BUT the magnet needs extreem care for instalation to operate properly. The battery gadget will click open the door with much more ease because the area of response is larger. This gives cat more time and less frustration.
I've taken out the maget kit and re-installed the old one, with new batteries. I do wish these batteries were more reliable and the magnet type worked better. Definately you need to monator your cat's collar and the door often. I am looking into a small dog-door to see if it's sturdier and works smoother. I must say - a pet-door is a great invention!"

Great idea but it's not there yet, February 9, 2008
by Susanna from Colorado

"Design seems overly fussy, not sturdy at all, lots of little moving parts and all made of cheap plastic, seems very delicate. Doesn't keep out intruders for long! Seems like a great idea that's not fully tested on all situations. Probably fine for a few gentle neighborhood cats you want to keep off the couch! This design will NEVER be raccoon proof - my local boys figured it out in about 2 months and simply ripped the door off its hinges and broke it! Raccoons fit through just fine, they look huge but it's all fur! Also, one outsider cat came to the door and my cat went to look, set off the door with his collar and the outsider hears the click and comes in!!!

The electronic activity, which clicks loudly, should be able to be switched off totally on the actual unit at night. The manual lock is a great idea but is unnecessarily tricky and not for people with a manicure! The "keys" are way too expensive for what they are and kind of bulky. The flashing light serves what purpose? If you want to check if it is still working, hold the collar up to the unit.

It's a good idea, but seems like a prototype. Please keep going and develop a good quality unit made of sturdy materials with a strong lock that can truly keep out intruders. If the raccoons and outside cats weren't the problem, we'd just get a cheaper cat flap!"

Staywell Infra-red cat door, September 4, 2007
by Ali1234 from Ottawa, ON

"The packaging says Raccoon proof, it is not!
They still managed to get in through the cat door and had a party in our garage with bird seed and garbage! Our poor cat didn't have a chance of eating any of his cat food coz that disappeared too!

Do not buy it, it's a waste of money."

Doesn't keep out other cats nor racoons, June 3, 2007
by TOcatowner from Toronto, Ontario

"Easy to fit but very questionable build quality, the first one broke soon after installation (we did get sent a free replacement). Really good idea, if only it worked.
The fully locked setting is not secure. We have had animals (next door's cat and racoons) that can hit the door hard enough from the outside to gain access, the plastic stops are not secure enough to prevent this happening (we now need to use additional measures to keep door locked).
In 'open' mode the cat next door has also worked out how to gain access by tapping the door until it bounces back and can be opened using that technique. Staywell have suggested we could use their more secure dog door but we are not convinced enough to spend anymore on what appears to be a flawed design. Basically we are still feeding the neighbourhood cats and racoons!"

Great Product/Great Idea, March 29, 2007
by Martharay from Starkville, Mississippi

"This cat door solved a big problem. It is a way for my cat to go in and out of the basement to eat while I am out of town. The electronic collar has worked without problems for three months. My cat can come and go without other animals being able to come in. The electronic key does not seem to bother my cat. I definetely recommend this product!"

Use of the Collar Key, January 18, 2007
by mkat from Roanoke, VA

"The cat door is keeping other critters out, which was our main objective. However, the collar key gathers moisture extremely quickly!! We used three keys in
succession (the store exchanged for us), with none of
them working for more than 2 weeks. It would corrode around the battery. In talking to Staywell Customer Service, they said that they were not having any complaints like this. Staywell did send me a free one, and suggested that we silicone all around where the two parts meet. This seems to work, as it's been two and a half weeks now and appears dry. The downside to this is that when the battery does wear out, we will have to buy a new unit instead of just changing a battery. The directions should give a warning about this moisture problem."

difficult door to work with, September 15, 2006
by mn42

"I got this door as a way for 2 of 3 of my cats to access food (the third is on a special diet). Unfortunately, one of my cats likes to dunk her head into the water dish- I found out that the collars are water-resistant, not waterproof. The collars are also $30, and with shipping about $40 (not something you want to spend every 2 months). The customer service is excellent, and this time I'm going to try to shrink-wrap the collar key to waterproof it. Otherwise, I think I would have chosen the magnetic door. Also, the door lock is pretty loud and I would install it as far away from your bedroom as possible."
