I was just looking for the price of replacement magnets as my cat seems to lose her collar on a regular basis (shhe roams in the woods). I read the reviews with horror stories and thought I'd add my experience. We have used our Staywell door for about six years without a problem. We even moved it with us to a new house and had no trouble with either install.
We are now living in Northern Minnesota with plenty of snow and subzero temperatures. The door is installed in a metal door in the garage which is heated to 50 degrees with down to minus 40 on the outside.
My only issue is having to replace the magnets when my cat leaves her collar (safety escape type, of course) in a tree or somewhere and can't get back in.

We bought this and another magnet for our 2 cats. Before we made it home, I opened the SEALED plastic and found that the whole electronic element with the sensor and battery insert was completely missing. We immediately turned around and returned it. They asked if we wanted another one. I assumed that if their factory has such terrible quality control, that it's probably a terrible product- so I declined. By reading the other reviews, it looks like I made the right choice.

Poorly designed, door "lock" doesn't work most of the time. Unreliable mechanism, may as well use an ordinary cat flap. I intend to exchange it for a better-designed product.

all the reviews here are very correct, as to not working when the cat needs in or out to having to purchase extra tunnel to finish the install. was very unsatisfied and should have read the reviews first.

I don't know what else to say, awful design and functionality. Just simply doesn't work, even when testing with the magnet in my hand, the door unlatches properly maybe 30% of the time. Eventually after 10-15 minutes of hard banging the cat will get thru, but by that time the whole house has been woken up by the tremendous noise this door makes and we've let the now angry cat in the old fashioned way. Replaced with a Catmate brand, which works purrrrfectly and silently.

This product comes with only visual and no written instructions. It took 5 hours and some tweaking to install it correctly and almost a trip to divorce court for me and my partner. I would think twice.

I have read the reviews and concur with the lower ratings. The latch is on the side of the door and does not hold well, and not built well. I bought the other brand and am very happy so far. The latch is much more sturdy and is assisted by a power latch. The latch is is also in the middle of the door so it is more secure.

Here are the problems with this cat flap:
1. Not great for outside walls as the outside cover could be prone to leakage and does not have a flap to protect the inside. In this regard the design seems a bit backwards.
2. Although designed for doors and walls of any depth the fact is this flap will only work in doors because the tunnel it is not long enough to pass through a standard wall therefore you need to buy an extra tunnel thats not supplied to make it work. very frustrating when you find that to be the case and very cheap of them not to supply it as standard.
So in short, if you plan to use this in a wooden door then it will probably work ok but i just find the whole design of this product unlogical.

We had a Cat-mate cat flap for several years that worked beautifully and solved our raccoon invasion problem nicely. The plastic recently broke, and we made the big mistake of replacing it with a Staywell door -- same idea: magnet on the cat's collar operates a switch.
But they are different designs, and the Staywell doesn't work. We have had raccoons in nightly. At first, I thought I had installed or adjusted it incorrectly, but tonight I looked carefully at the design. It's probably fine to keep other neighbor cats out, but anything larger, or more motivated will just push their way through.
The Cat-Mate door has a 9-V battery that lasts for a year; because it is powered, and because the internal mechanism is a little more robust, the latching mechanism is solid and sure. The Staywell model uses a larger magnet that hangs lower and the latching mechanism is tentative. Because there's not as much force, the latch is flimsy enough that a relatively light push will cause it to open.
Now my poor cat is freaked out, not only because we have had to lock the door and use the regular door (which he associates with going to the vet), but the also the raccoons have been eating his food. What a nightmare!

This has been a real saver for my cat and us. Since my cat loves the outside but love to come in and out so often it is hard on us. This happens all times of the day and night. Since we got this door she has the freedom of coming and going when she pleases . Also the safety of it is unbelievable ....When I'm not home she has a way to get in the house away from harms way and any bad weather there is.... If anyone is looking for something to help make life easier and happier for you cat and you..... this is the way to go...
