If you purchase this set up remember that you will need more sand, you can purchase it cheap at the hard ware store. Also the sand needs to be moist. This helps maintain humidity. If the kit does not have a heater you will need to get one of those as well. :) happy crabbie

After you get all of the items that you NEED for your hermit crabs you would not have alot of space for your crabs to live in. Although you could use this for an isolating tank during the molting process after you buy a tank heater (I recomend the repti tank heater, it has worked great for me as I do not have to worry about the temperature). Also the sand substrate that it comes with is terrible for the crabs help and molting as it does not in any way hold the moisture for aiding the crab to slip out of its exoskeleton.
Pros: easy to clean
Cons: low quality

This kit is something I would suggest to someone who is planning to get hermit crabs for the first time. It has a lot of the things you will need. It includes a small bag of sand, a small block of compressed soil, a water dish, a thermometer, food, one extra shell and samples of water conditioner and salt water mix.
However, it is not a complete kit as there are more things you will need to make your crabs happy. You will need at least two more dishes as you need one for fresh water, salt water, and food. You also will need something for them to climb around on such as driftwood or rocks and you will also need a small sprayer to mist the crabitat once daily. Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may also need a heater for your tank. Also, you should have at least two empty shells for each crab you keep.
The kit claims to be a setup for up to ten gallons, but the sand and soil amount supplied is not enough to cover the bottom of a ten gallon tank adequately. So depending on the side of your tank you may need to buy more of this as well.
I do recommend this starter kit for someone new to the hermit crab hobby as long as you understand that it doesn't contain everything needed, as it probably is a bit less expensive to buy this as a set rather than each item individually.
Pros: good first item to buy
Cons: not a complete starter kit

I got almost the same kit in store... but it had a few more things inside. It really includes almost everything a hermit crab needs! Definfitly a cheaper way to get all the supplies you need!

PROS: It fits a smaller Habitat. The stuff works pretty well, if you own a small Habitat for your crab
CONS: There is a little to much sand and a little to less soil. my crab loves the soil and too bad there's not enough. Also, the pellets are to hard to smash for my crab and avoids them when I mix his foods.
Pros: fits a smaller habitat
Cons: to little soil for my crab

I recently bought this for tree hermit crabs, and some of it is great, some it no so great. For example, the sponge is great at soaking up water and can be cut into pieces to give room for the water in the bowl provided. The bowl is also great. THe sand and soil are not enough. You need at least one or two more bags, and another brick of soil to provide the 2-3 inches required. The food is also plenty for a couple months. THe shell is not good because hermit crabs need round openings, and they give an oblong-opening-shell. The thermometer is necessary and works, although it is sort of hard to read. The care book is stupid, because it gives lots of bad info and is more of an ad for Zoo-Med products. The drinking water conditioner is what you put in all bowls, and its good, while the salt water conditioner is only for a weekly or monthly bath. It is good for a beginner or a 5 gal. tank, but not a 10 gal. tank unless you are prepared to buy more sand and soil.
Pros: provides all basics
Cons: needs more sand and soil

alright, i'll just get this out of the way, the kit is not adequate for a 10 gallon aquarium... oh sure, when you put the substrate included in a 10g, it will cover the bottom, but only barely, certainly not enough to allow the crabs to burrow, this kit is great for maximum 5 gallons, it is PERFECT for a large kritter keeper. also, the product discription included on this item is wrong, the kit includes one disc of hermit soil substrate, one 2 lb bag of yellow sand, one stick on thermometer, one water dish and sponge, and one can of dry pellet food that you can either crush or add water to to make it edible, a crab shell and a food shell (i think, i bought the kit a little while ago so i don't remember if it included an extra crab shell and food shell, i am sure of the rest though). With this kit what you have to buy extra is the critter keeper, some extra shells, a mini under tank heater and an extra water dish for salt water and aquarium salt, over all not bad for the price. An excellent starter kit for the beginner...
