I usually take a couple of steps when I notice that my rats have skin irritation. When my boys were younger, they had lice, so at the first sign of a potential outbreak, I knew that there were more steps to take than just treating the direct issue.
Obviously, the first step is to see a vet.
In my case- I had 4 rats, and did not have $150+ per rat to take ALL of them to the vet for treatment when there were no visible signs of bugs. I was lucky that this method worked for me, but i am NOT a vet so, for anyone looking for advice, my #1 advice is if you can afford it please see a vet first.
First- Washed their cages with Dial Dish Soap and soaked them in the bathtub. I have plastic cages with wire, so for the wire parts I let the shower run over it for a while and covered it in soap.
Next- I separated the boys to two different cages. One of them had worse irritation than the other, and he was losing fur, bleeding, covered in scabs from excessive scratching...the other just had a couple of spots where it looked like he had some scabs from scratching, but he has super sharp nails so he sometimes nicked himself.
Note: They only had irritation, but no visible sign of bugs in their fur.
I also had a cage with two girls next to the cage that housed both of my boys, so I also put more distance between all of their cages. My girls had no irritation, no signs of discomfort, but I also cleaned out their cage entirely using the same method.
Next, all of my rats got a bath in warm water, with small-pet shampoo so I could see down to their skin and make sure that there weren't any bites that I was missing. Plus, the warm water seemed to really soothe my rat who had the worse skin irritation. It seemed to be the ONLY thing that stopped him from scratching for a while.
After, I sprayed them each with the 8 in 1 Small Animal Flea and Tick Spray, and coated their cages with the Natural spray (just as a preventative measure for the cages themselves) I did not put bedding back in the cages. Sometimes bug outbreaks come from bedding, so I got rid of my old bedding, even though it was just the carefresh paper bedding.
Instead of bedding, I lined each of the 3 cages with puppy-pads, and paper towels for comfort/nesting. It was a pain to clean, but it was safer at the time, especially since my one boy had so much irritation.
Within a week, my boy rat with a couple of scabs was completely cleared. My other boy rat's hair started growing back, but he was still uncomfortable. I switched 2/3 cages to a fresh bag of Carefresh bedding, and kept my rat who was still in poor condition with the puppy pads, and sprayed both boys with 8 in 1 Small Animal Flea and Tick Spray again.
Two weeks from initial treatment, all of my rats are happy and healthy, with no signs of new scabs or skin irritation. My rat who had the worse skin condition has healed, and his hair has grown back completely. He is active and alert and happy again- it's like he's a completely different rat now.
With any kind of mite/lice/etc outbreak, it's important to be consistent with treatment because of the lifecycles...not sure if it WAS a bug outbreak, or just super sensitive skin...but I'm keeping my one rat who had the worse condition on the puppy pads with paper towels just in case.
Pros: price, easy to administer, works great

Okay everyone... this product DOES work and you need to give it time to do so. If your pet has mites or fleas you need to know that they have different life stages... ie. egg, larvae, adult. So have to be diligent and may have to apply this a couple of times. Believe me this product is WAY cheaper than taking your pet to the vet and getting prescriptions.
First of all, I recommend you dump the spray in a cup or bowl and use a cotton ball to apply it. Yes this is more time consuming but is better than spraying your animal and getting it in eyes, mouth, etc. You have to rub it into their fur and skin... basically soak them. This product worked immediately and so well that I had mites crawling up my forearms to get away from the product.
I rescued 2 rats from my ex that were INFESTED with mites. I switched their bedding from aspen to paper after I found out that aspen and pine bedding are commonly contaminated with mites, fleas, etc - so if you cannot seem to get rid of your "bug" problem, look at the type of bedding you are using.
When treating your animal you have to clean the cage, put down fresh bedding/litter AND replace any cloth materials inside the cage like a hammock or snuggle sack.... the cloth can have eggs, larvae or adults hiding in it to re-infest your pet. There was a suggestion online that you can use diluted vinegar to clean the cage with... yes I know it is a strong smell but if I don't wash it all away at least it won't harm my guys.
I hope this helps anyone that is having problems or feels overwhelmed.

I have a Holland Lop who recently got fleas. I found this item and I am very satisfied. It takes some time to get all of his hair and skin due to the copious amounts of it but all and all I'm pleased. He almost instantly stopped itching and the fleas were jumping/falling off when he shook. The only thing is the amount of time it takes and making sure you apply it thoroughly, but if you love your pets it wont matter. :)

I recently found out that my little dwarf bunny had lice/fleas..
I bought this product because I another users review claiming that they used this for a squirrels lice..
I was desperate so I gave it a try, and it worked well, killing the lice/fleas.. and I know this product will also somewhat prevent fleas/ticks/lice.. so I will definately add this product to my bunnies monthly grooming..
I had to use a comb to remove all the dead parasites..

I found a wild baby squirrel literally crawling with lice. I think he had more lice than fur. I wouldn't normally dose a wild animal, but I had to keep him in the house overnight and was worried about the lice spreading to my rats.
I couldn't believe it - the lice started dying on contact! I avoided his face but rubbed some into the top of his head. By the time he was dry, there were none left.
I've been reading reviews and it sounds like some people have a problem with this not getting rid of fleas, but other people have had great luck with fleas. I think possibly the people it's not working for aren't using it correctly, maybe not working it into the fur.
Animals hate being sprayed with stuff and they will put up a fight. Be strong. Wear gloves. Maybe get someone to help you.
Pros: effective, works quickly, appears to be safe
Cons: animals hate it

My 2 pet rats were infested with some kind of external parasites. They had red dots all over them and little scabs. I received conflicting info on whether it was mites or lice that they had, nonetheless this product eradicated the problem. My rats are much happier and have more energy now that this problem has been treated. I suggest that you use this once a week for 3 weeks to get rid of an ectoparasitical infestation. Using it once will probably not rid of the problem permanently as the life cycle of the parasites will continue as the eggs are swallowed and/or laid and hatch later to infect your pet again. My rats were not thrilled about being sprayed, but they are happy now that they are bettter! Make sure you spray your pet good, otherwise this product will not kill everything.
