Well Worth the Money,
December 19, 2006
by passlaw2
from Easton, MD
"Only thing I've ever found to keep my 5 cats off the kitchen counters. Bought 2 and set up across from each other to create a cross-fire area. Spray ran out in a couple of weeks. Would have lasted longer, but my husband & I often set them off by walking into range. It's been about 3 weeks since the spray ran out, but cats still won't get up there because of the sound. Considering the reduced stress levels on me, it was still money WELL SPENT!!!"

I recommend it to everyone I know,
October 29, 2009

"This is the bomb! I have 4-5 cats in my house at any time and this works like magic. It keeps them from sleeping on the couch at night, and kept the "digger" from clawing the carpet near my doorway while I slept. It only takes a few days to condition them to stay away from it, then my cats know if they even see the can, they avoid that area. I've even begun to use a decoy empty can or another can that size in one area while I moved the real one to a new area and it still works! Cats really really hate this sound, but it's completely harmless to them."

This thing works! Great for babyroom blockage!,
September 7, 2009
by NewDad
from Charleston, SC
Pros: non-toxic, great for infant rooms, odorless, it works like a charm! Cons: fairly pricey to some alternatives (but worth it!), probably not great for households with toddlers
"My wife and I are expecting our first child and we had started trying to keep the cats from entering the babyroom, particularly since one of them is a notorious jumper and fearlessly will snuggle up against anything warm.
We tried several methods, including a non-toxic spray on the carpet that was supposed to give off an odor that deterred cats. The cats would just walk on through it into the room. We tried behavioral methods suggested on cat websites as well. No go.
Then we tried Ssscat. Unbelievable. In one day's time, the cats won't go near the room. They do fine walking past it to other rooms but they take a wide path around the doorway. We are also adding a retractable mesh gate (both for crawling/walking babies as well as a cat) but the Ssscat is that extra peace of mind that we know will prevent them from approaching the room or hopping the gate.
One reviewer is right: Once the cats get hit by it once or twice, they learn and won't come back. The gate will be just enough of a reminder that we can probably take Ssscat away and they'll never think about coming into the room.
A few things: First, the range is fine, despite some of the other reviews. Almost too good. It was picking up some of the cats at a good 8-10 feet in distance. Just experiment with the angles and positioning that works for you and walk by it yourself a few times until it works as desired.
Second, on occassion it won't stop going off. It will shoot 9-10 times in a row, but we found when it just did an ever-so-slight tilt upward on the can it prevent it. Maybe it was seeing the floor and continuing to think it was movement? But regardless that went away too.
Third, I suggest resting it just inside a doorway so it nudges against the inner wall and not actually in a doorway itself. That way only movement entering the room will see it and not just movement walking past.
Cat lovers: Keep in mind this is non-toxic, odorless. It hit my leg a few times when I was positioning it and no moisture or even cool sensation was there. It's a noise maker for the most part and one that cats really really don't like.
Do eet!"

Best thing EVER!,
July 22, 2009
by RagdollLover2

"This is the BEST deterrent I have seen. You have to be smart about it and not put it in places where people are going to set it off too or it will empty the cartridge quickly. My new kitten wanted to do his 'business' behind one of my overstuff chairs in a corner and he doesn't go anywhere near there anymore thanks to this product."

Instant gratification! Highly recommended.,

Cons: humans must be >3 feet away
"The first day we used this it worked! Unfortunately, it was empty about 2 days later. Anytime we came within 3 feet of it we would set it off also. I had it set at the furthest spot (width wise) on the dinning room table and every single time we walked by it it went off. We set it off more than the cats did! That is the only bad thing I can say about it. It is incredibly effective at teaching cats or dogs where they are and aren't allowed to go. We started with leaving it on the dining room table. As soon as our cats set it off they never went on the table the entire week! Next I tried it on the kitchen counter to keep them off there. Complete success!! I am on my way to pick up refills because we've run out. This product will be the answer to your prayers for keeping your cat or dog away from the things you don't want them walking on or chewing!"

Not as effective as I'd like,
March 1, 2009
by tinkerbell24
from Henderson, NV
"My cat loves to jump on the kitchen counter and explore, so I thought this would be a good purchase to keep him from going on the counter. The problem was, it didn't startle him enough to stay off. The first time he jumps on the counter and it goes off, he will jump down but then will become "brave enough" to not be bothered by it anymore. Also, the refill cans do not last very long because anytime someone walks into the kitchen, it goes off."

Immediate Success,
January 16, 2009
by AANNJJ
from Toronto, Ontario
"While toilet training our cat, we tried everything to keep her off of the basement rug (where she preferred to do her business when the litter box was removed). We installed the Ssscat at the doorway to the basement and heard it go off twice during the night while the cat was prowling around. By the next morning she refused to go anywhere near the basement entrance! We have long since turned the device off, but left it in the same place. The cat still steers clear of the area."

Wow, and I thought scat mats worked well.,
December 18, 2008
by Mickie513

"We have 10 cats and we also foster. I had a couple of cats peeing on the kitchen counter (yeah, gross). In desperation I was looking for a way to keep them, and the other cats just cruising, off the counter. I had heard a trick of setting trays of water along the edges so when they jumped up they would hit the tray that would slide of the counter, this seemed to be a lot of work for multiple cats and would have to be set up time after time.
I found Ssscat and bought one. OMG this is the best thing ever and, if you see it, the funniest thing ever. The only issue we had was that the motion sensor would detect us going out the back door about 6 feet away. We adjusted the sensor a bit and put a box at the end of the counter to keep it from detecting us. I love it and want refills although I've not seen any cats on the counter.
You do have to watch it if you put it somewhere you walk often or you'll waste spray but I'd do it again even with it detecting us."

Cats are so scared of the ssscat sprays,
August 18, 2008
by Feh60195
from Schaumburg, IL
"Had to grab a couple of these to keep two tabbies off a couch, and save what's left of it since one of the cats kept peeing on it. Put two of them around the couch near the floor. Now the cats completely avoid the couch after having to deal with them one night (cats attacked the couch while we're sleeping). When going to the first floor where this couch is, the cats circle around and go through the kitchen and don't want to go nearby! this product works great! The very first night I hear the sprays go off a couple times during the night, and that was it for the cats to get scared of them. The tricky thing is the cats quickly learn the shape of the cat and avoid it... one cat jumped over it completely, and knows how not to trigger it ... but we're humans, and we're smarter than them, somehow."

It Works - Until it Doesn't,
August 16, 2008
by SkeeterNTexas
from Nevada, TX
"This product works well as long as it's active. It deters the cats from entering the area where they urinate until it runs out. The cats avoid the area until they realize they aren't being sprayed anymore then they are right back to urinating on the rugs. I found peppermint oil mixed with water in a spray bottle works well for keeping the cats out of an area; and it smells good and won't scare the bejeebers out of you in the middle of the night when you walk near it."

ssscat works for more than cats,
June 11, 2008
by archie
from London, ON
"we had a racoon problem in the yard - they were getting into the garbage, no matter what we tried the crafty little critters got into the bins. Not wanting to hurt them, we got Ssscat (my daughter recommended it) and tried it out by the garbage bins. We actually sat up to watch if it worked and sure enough it spooked the racoons and they ran away. The company makes a specific outdoor garden product like ssscat too. Great job - easy, safe and effective!"

Exactly what I needed!,
April 14, 2008
by akakizzy
from Abilene, TX
"I saw this online and went up to my local Petsmart, luckily they had it in stock. I am expecting my third child and my two cats are contantly going into the nursery, sleeping in the crib, getting all over everything! I had tried the scat mat, but the cats learned to jump pver it. I bought the Scat Automatic Deterrent and it works perfectly! I put it inside the room, beside the door frame, where it will go off if anything walks past the door. It's also close enough that I can turn it off and pick it up if I need to go in there. I was fortunate enough to see my older cat set it off for the first time. Sure enough, she started slinking torwards the door and the second she went in it went off. It sprays like an aerosol can for a few seconds and is a little loud. My cat jumped in the air and ran out as fast as she could! It doesn't harm your cat in the least and thr aersol doesn't get them wet. I heard the can go off 4 times that night and I haven't heard it since! Both of my cats look into that room and tiptoe around it now. Much better since they were playing chase in and out of that room all night. By the time the baby gets here in 2 more months, they will know that that room is off limits to them!"

Worth the price,
March 14, 2008
by poolqueen
from St. Louis
"Just finished redecorating living and dining room. My three cats liked to use these rooms as their personal playground. Bought four of the units, set them up and now the cats won't set foot near these rooms. Make sure to read directions carefully, let the motion sensor settle. The reaction was so startling, I videotaped it! The expense of the unit is well worth the price of not cleaning up vomit, hair and having the furniture clawed."

It saved my furniture!,
March 9, 2008
by PVDEE
from Atlanta, GA
"I have a male cat who has chosen two pieces of my furniture to spray. I had tried everything and nothing worked, so I bought two units of Scat as a last resort. The product was easy to set up and got immediate results. Fortunately, I was able to position it so that it doesn't go off unless the cat gets too close. There is no alarm as some of the other reviews mentioned, but it is just as effective. My cat now will go nowhere near the furniture. I think I will be able to move them around if he changes locations and not lose the effect. At last I am able to make peace with the rascal!"

It Really Works!,
February 21, 2008
by HappierCatMom
from Colo Springs CO
"I read the previous reviews, wasn't convinced, but decided to try it anyway. Well, it works great. It really startles the cats, and in the couple of days I've used it they have only tried to get on the kitchen counter once after the first exposure. I really think this will stop them. In response to the review that the unit stayed activated, it must have been defective and should have been returned. There is an on-off switch. It fires for maybe a second, then stops. Just a note for those who think letting a cat get on counters is OK, what if they jump onto a hot stove? The investment in this product is much cheaper than a vet visit for a burned cat!"

Flawed design,
January 16, 2008
by wstone14
from Hatboro, PA
"We purchased this product to keep our cat off of the counters. Although it was extremely effective at detecting him on the counter and making him get down, the product will CONTINUALLY SPRAY until you are able to shut it off. We left it on during the day and the cat set it off once and wasted an entire $12.99 canister in one day. I would only recommend this product to someone who will be in the immediate vicinity when the cat sets it off, but honestly, cats are smarter than that and know when they can get away with things. This product has a flawed design and is certainly not worth the $$. The cat will only learn if it is disciplined EVERY time it goes where it doesn't belong. Once the canister runs out, the cat will figure out that it is again safe to jump up. BE WARY."

IT WORKS!!!!,
October 9, 2007
by tsen

"My cat decided to start marking the upstairs hall and an area in my office. I work 12 hour shifts and am home very little. I went to buy a "scat mat" and the salesman talked me out of it. SO, I decided to try this product. It was expensive, but not as expensive as the scat mat. I set it up as soon as I got home and heard it go off two or three times and she hasn't even been back up-stairs! Worked great!!!"

Yes it really works!!,
June 9, 2007

"This Product really works; I have a 4 year old cat that thinks she is a dog. I have tried sprays etc. but she would protest and go nuts! But she is not scratching the furniture & it is here to make sure of that when I can not. Its cost is high, although I could not totally justify the coast but it was not wasted either!"
