Really wanted it to work out

April 13, 2013
by BlueOnBlue
fromNew York NY
So six months ago after doing some research I wanted to switch my dogs food to some more natural, better ingredients and age appropriate. I found Blue Senior.
I have two Jack Russell Terriers one is 13 and she weighs about 12 lbs and the other is 11 and he weighs about 22. (He is probably not pure, but I don't care)
At first, they both liked it. Possibly because it was new and different. That fascination quickly faded. The 13 year old started not eating most of her food. I serve them a morning and evening meal and she was down to eating roughly half of one serving. She would also pick out the niblet pieces, eating only the larger ones. She was losing weight so I was beginning to be concerned. I tried adding some water, and that worked for a couple of days, but then back to the picking and not eating.
The boy wasn't too fond of it either, but he just loves to eat so he would usually finish both servings. But sometimes would not eat too.
Other than the not liking and not eating, the worst part was the gas. Both dogs suffered this the whole six months. AT first I chalked it up to the change in food. I followed the instructions and mixed in old with new for the change over and everything. Ultimately, that is what got me to change back to the brand they were eating, but a more age appropriate product.
I guess Blue is worth a shot and if your dogs like it and doesn't give them gas, I'm sure it would be fine. My dogs just didn't take to it well.
Thanks for reading.
TLDR: My dogs didn't like it and it gave them gas.

My Chica has been with me for the last 10 years and was used to average dry dog food until recently she was experiencing digestive problems. I researched this Blue Senior dog food/dog snacks. She loved it from the first try and has not had digestive problems since!! It was a lifesaving moment for all of us! Thanks Blue!!

After a lot of research, I switched my rats to this over to this food. The ingredient list and nutritional value (especially protein and fat percentages) was loads better than the top rat block recommendations. I did switch them back to rat block once when I forgot to cancel the automatic shipment and they refused to eat it.
My rats look extremely healthy: solid, muscular, and bright eyed, with sleek shiny fur. I brought a few of them along for the ride a couple days ago to meet up with the breeder and she now plans on switching her rattery over.
Pros: high quality, digestible, taste

Our Border Collie, "Preston", just loves Blue Buffalo. He had some digestive problems and we tried other dry foods. We saw an add for Blue and asked around. My daughters friend has her dog on it and she said they love it. We started Preston on it and he loves it. Since he's been eating Blue, his coat is shiny and soft and he feels good. Even the cat sneaks a bite or two now and again. : )

i usually buy eukanuba for labradors...then i found out what they put in their dog food. the petsmart employee was so helpful and recommended this product because my dog is getting old and can't tolerate the glucosamine tabs. this contains glucosamine, omega oils, deboned chicken and all natural products PLUS he loves it. great product. which it wasn't so expensive but it's definitely worth the money.

This is the first food (in 8 years of trying) that both dogs love! Our German Shepherd is somewhat picky but has GI issues...this food is extremely well tolerated. Our Golden Retriever just got finicky lately but barks at me now if I don't get it in the bowl fast enough.
Their fur is shiny, their energy is good and most importantly....they love it!

Our almost 8 yr old English Mastiff had tremendously slowed down and her appetite was really waning.
Although Blue is a bit more expensive, I thought if these were her last days, she should have the best.
Wow! Just finishing the first full size bag and we couldn't be more impressed. She chows down and happily anticipates mealtimes now. Her energy level is amazing- so playful and her walks are longer. Reduced shedding and softer coat are an added bonus!
She has had no problems/increase in stools or upset tummy from the switch. She was on ProPlan before-great brand but not for her.
Blue is like a fountain of youth because she acts like a pup again!

I have a 9 year old Lab/Aussie X that has been on Purina ProPlan since I got him (10 weeks old). He's never had a problem on it at all. I decided to switch to Blue Buffalo Senior because he was a shed monster! He would shed like crazy naturally, but it was a million times worse when his coat was changing. I was hoping the all-natural ingredients would help with that. It's been a bag and a half later and the shedding has been reduced by a good 80-90% less! I noticed the change in his coat texture after the first bag and my roommate finally said something to me about it a week ago. Right before I switched him over, he started getting hotspots. Those are now a thing of the past as well. I would have switched a long time ago, but the price scared me off. ProPlan has since raised their prices and it's only a $3 difference now. There was no reason to not try it and both Bajio and I are glad I did. He had no problem adjusting to the lifesource bits and while he never had an issue with his stool before, I have noticed he goes less-usually once a day. The best part....I don't have to vacuum every day!

My dog eats this every day, twice. She always finished it, even licks the bowl and she will want more.
I love the way it's all natural ingredients and there's no by-products at all like the "premium" and "big brand" dog foods.
I'm planning to switch though, because even if it's good, I've heard there's been problems with this food and my dog's coat has never improved. Her coat sometimes even gets worse.

We loved the ingredients and have watched what our two seniors 15 and 13 have eaten since pups. In the beginning they ate it but did spit out the little vegetable pieces. After two months they were eating it fine....but the out put in the yard tripled. Blue Buffalo had no answers for us.
Last week we bought another huge bag and one of the dogs would not go near the food. So after 3 days of her saying I'm hungry I went and got Nutro and she gobbled it down. I figured it was the food because she would eat the snacks and all the extra stuff that we put on her food.
Someone said maybe the protein was high and turned them off. I would tell everyone to try it, but in the end we aren't the ones eating it.
Pros: great ingredients
Cons: expensive and triple the volume of stool

I recently switched from Natural Balance to Blue Buffalo since N.B. was making him gain weight, and I liked the ingredients better. So far my G.Shep. has taken to it quite well, and eats every bite. If Blue keeps making healthy all natural products then they have me as a customer for life.

My boyfriend and I recently adopted an 8 year old Cocker Spaniel and noticed her stool was bright yellow. We realized it was from the food she was previously eating- which was Purina Little Bites. I had done a lot of internet research to see which organic/holistic dog food would be best for her and Blue was it! We keep organic food in the house for ourselves, so we figured- why shouldn't our dog eat organic too?
The minute I brought this stuff home and fed her a few pieces of it, she was hooked! Transitioning her to Blue Buffalo took no time at all-she refused to eat the Purina Little Bites and would pick it out of her dish! Her coat is a lot softer and she has A LOT more energy now. Plus, her stool is the normal brown color that it should be.
The price doesn't bother me at all, I've seen far worse for inferior quality dog food.
Pros: absolutely no fillers, very reasonably priced for the quality

My dog is Golden Retriever mix and tends to itch alot. I put her on this food and her itching stopped. It turned out that Golden Retriever breeds are allergic to any products with corn. This product contains no corn. It's wonderful and save money than going to vet constantly about itching problem. It also gave my dog a real shiny fur! I know it's expensive but it's worth it in long run.

My senior lab dog is on a prescription dog food (weight reduction) which is very expensive so I have been purchasing a bag of this food and mixing it in with the prescription dog food since it is formulated for seniors and has the extra benefits of omega-3, etc. My vet ok'd me mixing the food and there has been no digestive problems, from this food; my dog loves it and is always happy when it comes to feeding time.

This was recommended for my rats main food on a rat forum so I gave it a try and my rats love it. I have used other dog foods before but when I changed my boys to this they fatened up and got very shiny fur. The 6lb bag lasts my two male rats over a month.

Petey (Rhodesian Ridgeback mix) and Dixie (Black Lab Mix) are both almost 9 years old and LOVE this stuff! Petey used to be on Hill's at the Shelter (also good food) but I read up on ingredients and reviews (here and elsewhere) and tried this. Although he and Dixie are seniors they are both very spry and play like puppies. Coats are shiny and a cup each in teh morning and another cup for dinner (after finishing 1/2 can of wet food) and they are really happy and healthy! Highly recommended!!!
Pros: dogs love it and eat it all up in one sitting, no fillers all natural very healthy stuff
Cons: a little on the expensive side but not bad

We have six "official" pets (three dogs and three cats - outdoors is another matter since our property is a NWF-certified wildlife habitat) and we feed Blue Buffalo to 4-1/2 of them (more on that below). I've found that feeding pets is not unlike feeding kids - there's what's good for them and what they'll eat. I consider four things when selecting pet food:
Nutrition: AAFCO standards pretty much assure nutrition, so that's an easy one. Of course, AAFCO compliance doesn't tell the whole picture, but it does assure that the essentials are there in the correct proportions.
Ingredients: High-quality digestible protein is most important, although I'm not a snob with a knee-jerk reaction to certain ingredients (e.g. by-products and glutens). I know that I certainly wouldn't consider eating a wild carnivore's natural diet, so what's palatable to me isn't an issue. When I buy a pet food, I like to see evidence of my money being spent on the ingredients rather than marketing.
Palatability: This is a big one! The best food is no good if your pets won't eat it. Our vet, like many others, pushes Hill's but none of our animals will touch the stuff. The only high-quality foods that they actually like are Blue and Royal Canin, which leads us to...
Price: Blue Buffalo and Royal Canin are both premium dog foods which cost roughly the same.
My wife's 15 year old toy poodle, Buttons, has a very sensitive digestive tract. Ever since she passed the 10 year old mark, regular food gives her loose stools and causes other problems. The vet naturally sold us some Hill's, which she refused to eat. I tried several senior formulas and eventually settled for Royal Canin which she liked better, but still wasn't crazy about. Finally we started feeding her Blue and she loves it and seems to be thriving on it.
The reason we tried Blue on Buttons is that we "inherited" an 8 year old Saint Bernard (an orphan of hurricane Ike which showed up on our doorstep one day) which we named Duke. I went through several types of senior food to find what he liked. It was in the process of trying other senior foods that we tried some of the Blue on Buttons. Duke liked Blue the best, so that's what he gets now. However, he's also the reason I said we feed Blue to 4-1/2 of our six pets. Duke much prefers canned food (expensive since he goes through three large cans per day), so we feed him a mix of Blue (for nutrition) and less expensive canned food (for bulk).
The one dog we don't feed Blue is my granddaughter's 4 year old Scotty. The only reason we don't is that she buys the food for her own dog - usually Purina One.
Pros: our dogs love it
Cons: price

My 10 year old german shepherd recently had a bacterial infection. When I took her to my vet, he advised me that the protein count in her food was too high and switched her to Science Diet I/D. She HATED it, I could barely get her to eat. So I started looking online for natural foods and I came across the Blue brand. What really caught my eye were reviews about other dogs who chewed on their paws, apparently a food allergy, which I wasn't aware of. My girl chewed her paws incessantly. So I gave the Blue Senior brand a try, and let me tell you, she loves it. I have never seen her clean the bowl the way she does with this food. When I get home from work all she wants to know is "when are we going to eat!" Her coat looks better, she loves mealtime, and she no longer chews on her feet. I have already recommended this brand to people I work with and they have said that their pets love it as well. I'd never heard of this brand until I did some research, but I will never feed my girl anything else. I am also going to switch my cats over to it. Thank you for all the posts that helped me decide to give this brand a try - I'm so glad I did!!!
