Halti Holt Training Head Collar

The Halti Holt Training Head Collar is a very effective humane tool for leash training and daily management of hard to control dogs. Its revolutionary design is based on the same principle as a horse's head collar - if you guide the head, the body will surely follow.

Great for a dog that pulls. My dog didn't accept it very easily, we were testing it out walking around Pet Smart and he looked like a bucking bronco but he got used to it after a day or two

Holy cow, this product is a miracle! I have spent 7 months trying to train my dog with a harness, choke collar, even the spikey choke collars. She would still pull and I HATED walking her! She is about 40 pounds and very energetic. She gets very excited when she sees other dogs and no matter what I did, she always pulled. As soon as I put this on her and we began walking it was like she was a different dog. She was very calm and physically could not pull the leash. If she is standing still she still tries to rub it off her face but when we are walking she is an angel and I can actually enjoy taking her for long walks! I don't know how I survived 7 months without this! I will highly recommend it to anyone with a dog that pulls the leash! Two enthusiastic thumbs up here!

Despite our best attempts, our golden has always been difficult on a leash and stubborn about changing her ways. Her pulling was certainly the worst part about walking her. Of course, pulling was worse as we approached other animals or people, but even if we had the street to ourselves, she'd pull and pull and pull. Not only was walking her not enjoyable, it would be embarrassing at times. Finally, we tried the Halti. I'll be honest, I was not expecting much and it absolutely blew my mind. There was an initial five minute struggle where she refused to walk and tried to get free, but after that, she was walking calmly, the leash was loose, and within a month, if another dog passed, I could have her sit. She does like to walk slightly ahead of me, but the leash is always loose and people have commented on how well behaved she is. I would recommend this to anyone, and have to several people already. The key is being firm - if your dog puts up an initial fight, do not remove the Halti. It is not hurting them!

Saved a lot of stress!

April 7, 2013
by lovesherpup

I have a highly energetic 7 month old border collie who has always played off leash with other dogs and in large open areas. We always tried to walk her on a leash or with a harness but she would either refuse to walk or pull so hard it just wasn't enjoyable. A friend of mine recommended the Halti to me as she also has a high energy border collie who pulls on a leash. I really wasn't keen on the idea of putting something around my dogs face, partly because I didn't want people to think she was vicious and not want to pet her. I realized once I put it on her that it didn't look like muzzle at all, and it didn't stop her mouth from opening! The first few excursions were tough to start with but after 5-10 mins she totally understood not to pull (little treats and encouragement went a long way!). This saved me all kinds of stress during our walks and my pup is more relaxed as well since she is constantly rewarded for not pulling instead of being scolded. I giggled the entire way home as it was so easy to walk. The only mistake I made was putting it on her and then leaving it on in the car, within the 5 mins it took to get to our walk spot she had chewed through the extension strap that attaches to the collar.... luckily an easy enough fix with a bit of duct tap ;)

I did not start by immediately attaching a leash to it. I bought it yesterday, and have done the following since: I put it on her, and adjusted the fit (got size L). Then, let her wear it for about 5 minutes. Every time she struggled to get it off, I distracted her with affection (Kaci is NOT food motivated at all...she buries all treats instead of eating them in front of me). After 5 minutes, I removed it. A few hours later, I put it on her again, and brought her in the house (a rare treat for her, since she is very unruly and won't calm down inside). This time, with the indoor distractions, there was very little struggle to get it off. After 5 minutes, I took it off. A few hours later, on again. This time, no struggle to get it off, while we played with her toys outside. This was yesterday (the day I got it). TODAY, I put it on her and watched...no struggle, only affection and play with toys. Success! She associates it with good things. Now, I attached a leash and walked a bit in her fenced yard. At first, she flopped around like a fish on a line! She is used to pulling me all over the place and zig-zagging around with her nose on the ground! When she tried to paw it off, I gently pulled her head upward and said "No". After about 5 minutes, she started to get the idea. After 15 minutes, we even walked beside the chicken coop and she didn't lunge even once! Our first walk in 4 years with a loose leash! Be sure to leave enough slack on the leash for the halti to loosen up when your dog is walking correctly. If it's tight all the time, they will never learn what is the correct position to walk at. So far, so good! It can only get better! NOTE: pay attention at all times when your dog is wearing this! Kaci sometimes gets the safety strap (attached to her collar) looped under her foot/leg. This causes it to pull her head down and she panics.

I have a large American Bulldog who loves to pull, very pig-headed. When he sees another dog while we're out walking he immediately wants to play. Since he's big ands looks tough others automatically assume he's aggressive.
This really helps keep him at my side and prevent pulling and jumping. The padded muzzle piece prevents Chaffing to his snout and the collar clasp ensure he can't squirm out of it. Great investment as long as I keep it out of his reach.

I had a Great Dane and she pulled constantly - This was the only lead that EVER worked for her!!! She used it for years before she passed and it was the BEST lead I have ever used. Nothing works like this one!
Since I have used the sames size (large) on my English Bulldog, who is deaf and "slow". I got him as an adult dog with horrible leash manners!
He is really stubborn and strong - no harness or collar ever worked on him and he'd drag full grown men. While he hated using the lead at first and would claw it violently, I would give it a quick tug and he'd stop - He got used to it very quickly and now walks submissively behind me - instead of dragging me like a bulldozer.
We've been using it for 5+ years now, and it has been ABUSED - hiking, rivers, camping, fishing...
Best tool EVER for training a deaf dog that cannot take verbal commands! As long as it is on him, he never strays or acts up either! Perfect for public manners as well!!!

This product is amazing!
I bought it because I am fostering a large pit bull that is not used to leash walking, so she pulls a lot. It made me not even want to walk her. When it came in the mail I was so excited to try it, although my boyfriend was skeptical because of how it looked. He did not think she would like it or that it would make any difference.
When we took her outside with it on we were both so thrilled! It was like she was a different dog! She did not pull at all, even though the kids across the street were playing and squirrels were running around.
This is a miracle product. I bought another one for our puppy, but he needs to grow into it.

I've had three service dogs now (2 finished, one in training) and two regular pet dogs. All of them being labs or lab mixes they were strong, energetic dogs and pulled me ferociously. My current service dog in training in a lab/newfoundland mix that literally hauled me around at 10 months old on a regular collar. Regular collars just didn't cut it for any of these dogs. Tried another brand and was not pleased with the results, but got creative with my easiest dog and tried the halti and what a response ! He loved it, so I used it with the other dogs and got same results. Seemed to make them focus so much quicker and it didn't seem you were fighting them. My working dogs get excited when they see me pick it up because they know they are going to work and thilled. I think if they could put it on themselves they would ! Suprisingly durable - the one I have on my current working dog that wears it about 12 hours a day, 6 days a week, is now 4 years old and still looks great. If it gets dirty, soak it in the sink and rinse and it's clean. Only problem I have now is the collar clip is starting to stick, so it's about time to get a new one for him. The other is at work my dog gets bored and pulls on it sometimes loosening the head strap, but no biggie I just slide it back to where it should be. But two thumbs up, I'll always use these on my dogs from now on !

I just purchased this harness today and have only used once so far but it made a HUGE improvement. My Aussie (50lbs) rescue is 13 months old and I have had her for 5 months...we have tried everything up to this point to help train her with her leash pulling but nothing else worked. I was a little unsure about using a head harness but once I started using it on her I realized it was similar to training a cow or horse with a halter and it made sense that it would work with my stubborn Aussie. When she is on a leash she goes into a trance like it's her job to pull us as fast as possible. As soon as I had this on her, she fought me and would stick her paw up and get it stuck in the collar connection but I would stop and help her out, get her refocused and move forward. By the end of the walk she was much more relaxed with a loose leash. I put it on her later in my home when I was explaining it to my husband and she walked around the house just perfect. This has been the first harness (tried a Sporn/Holt, backpack, regular nylon harness, Easy Walk) that has had any effect on her. I have high hopes that this will continue to improve with time.

My Husky/Lab cross, Mya is incredibly strong for her 56 lb frame. Mya pulls and pulls. She can even drag around my very fit husband and has pulled muscles in both of our backs.
When my obedience coach recommended the Halte, I was skeptical. When I saw Mya anxiously pawing at her nose, I was upset. However, the coach encouraged me to try it for the class.
I couldn't believe the change in her. She stopped fixating on other dogs and people and finally walked beside me. It took a while for her to get used to wearing it, but it was worth being patient with her. Now, when she sees the Halte, she sits nicely and when I go to put it on her, she slips her nose in herself, because she associates it with going for a walk, just like she did with her leash.
We only use the Halte when walking. It makes our walks way more enjoyable, because my arm isn't being constantly wrenched, and she isn't coughing and choking at the end of the leash (which used to really upset me). She can eat, drink water, and carry a ball while wearing the Halte. I feel much more in control of her. She can get very excited around other dogs (she is still only 1 year old) and I feel in total control and don't get nervous when she tries to lunge or react to other dogs.
A size medium fits Mya perfectly. I did remove the safety collar attachment, because she had a tendency to get her paw caught in it when we first started using it.
I would absolutely recommend this product. It has improved my relationship with my dog and made our walks and runs so much more relaxing.

My family is a choker believer family. It was the only thing that kept the family dogs from pulling. Except my Siberian Husky mix (1 year) who loves pulling! The choker wasn't working on her and it got worse when we got another puppy (7 months now Swissy mix). My youngest one never pulled but where ever her head went to, her body followed. So if she as looking acrossed the street, her body will follow out in the road. Or if she looked on our side at kids, her body will follow and practically knock me over. She would speed up and slow down, Typical from not getting enough walks so a little more training but she keeps on growing. We went through 3 chokers within 2 months. So we tried this, it may be the right size now but if she outgrows this head collar, the next size up would be the XL. It works perfectly for both of my dogs, it stopped my husky from pulling and it helped my Swissy mix from looking everywhere and also kept her from speeding up and slowing down and running us over. Both absolutely hate it but after them walking for 15 mins, they smoothed out and relaxed.

I will say that I was slightly worried at first because I have a 175lb St. Bernard with a fear agression issue and the plastic clip looked a bit flimsy. I like this version better than some of the other head halters because it has a backup mechanism, being connected to the collar. I have now had it for about 9 months and it has held up great. It only took my dog a couple days to get used to (with the help of treats and walking him around the house in it before taking him out). He used to lunge at strange people and dogs and we had tried everything from chokes, prongs, regular harnesses, and e-collars. The regular harness just added leverage to his lunging (even the "easy walk" harnesses as he figured out how to keep his balance on a lunge with that). The rest just made him more anxious of strangers, as they punished his reactions. We are still working with my dog's agression, but he cannot lunge in the head harness. He also can use it with his muzzle. I can control him with one hand, even when he is reacting to his triggers (realize that he weighs more than I do). My only regret is that I did not start him out with the head harness, maybe his fear agression would not have been as bad. Now we are getting a great dane puppy (5 month old) and my only concern is which size to get for him and how quickly I will need to size-up.

When i put it on her she did great but she was not really used to it so she was shaking her head and being really stubborn, she is doing great now and getting used to it, It works great, she does not pull on me anymore, i have had my hand bleed because she pulls so hard and it hurt, she does great off leash than she does on leash because if shes on a leash she pulls but if shes not she will walk right next to me and i cant do that because she is not friendly with other dogs and this also works great for a muzzle i might add.

I would like to start out by saying that I am a female & only weigh 120lbs. I have an extra large Great Dane & an extra large Bull Mastiff, both 10 months old. Even at their young age they are huge & nothing, & I mean nothing worked for the pulling on walks, I tried chokers, those spiky chokers, treats, punishment, everything. They knew that they could easily whip me around with anything I tried.. So, I went on a limb & bought 2 of these (the largest sizes) and I immediately put them on because I was so anxious, & they worked right away! I honestly could not believe it.. I would highly, highly recommend buying this if you have a pulling dog especially a larger breed! Now by just using these only 1 night I can hold both of their leashes in one hand.. (:

I prefer this product over the others because of has a clip that attaches to the collar. I have had this product about 2 years and it hasn't wore out or broke yet. I love how the bottom adjusts to fit the muzzle of my dog. This is a great product when training dogs also if your dog reacts to another dog you can gentelly pull the leash back to correct him. Also if he pulls then his head will be pulled back to correct him not to hurt. Love it.

I have a smaller shelter rescued dog (18lb), and she's always been very difficult to walk safely. She pulled forward and backward, and bounced a lot, and I tried everything to stop the pulling, chains, harness, you name it. She choked herself, tangled, and pulled out of the chain, and somehow ducked out of three separate correctly fitted harnesses. This is the first thing that actually worked. While sizing was a bit of a challenge, and the band stretched out a lot, I was able to make this one work. I will be getting the smaller size the next time I go in though. As far as putting it on, it took a couple minutes to adjust it the first time, and again once it stretched out, but after that it takes less than a minute to go on, and my dog is excitable and a bit headshy. She will fuss about it if we stand still, but as long as we're moving forward she's fine with it. My advice to someone considering this is go for it, and the first time you use it get your dog moving the second it's on so they won't have time to fuss about it.

We adopted our dog from the shelter and while we were very excited to take him out for walks he would make it very difficult constantly pulling and struggling to follow our lead. I bought this head collar after one of the trainers recommended it to us. The difference it has made has been amazing! It starts working instantly so it's not like you have to train them or anything. Ours got a little antsy but if you give them a treat they will snap out of it and eventually associate wearing it with getting a treat (ha!) I can take him for walks comfortably with significantly less pulling. He still pulls a bit which is why I'm only giving it 4 stars and also because it can be a little confusing to put it on. But if your dog pulls, you NEED this! (also, don't get fooled by the looks of this collar, it doesn't hurt them)
