I've bought nearly every cat door that AniMate makes. I thought this one was finally exactly what I needed, but as usual, this product misses the mark for me. The microchip feature is perfect - with the magnets/tags, the cats lose their collars with some frequency and I don't want them to be locked out when I am not home or they are being chased, etc. Also collars on cats can be hazardous. So this door with microchip recognition solves that problem.
AniMate makes a collar-based "Elite Super Selective" door - that really is selective. You can set it to allow each cat individual access In only, Out only, or In/Out, and timer, which is perfect because if any of my four cats is outside I want them to be able to come in the house at any time, except it uses collars. There are two cats that I only want to allow out during the daytime. This door was given the same name, but is not selective at all as it turns out. All cats must have the same access options which doesn't solve my issue. I could choose to *not* program the two cats that I don't wish to allow Out at all times, but then they would not be able to get back in the house, when I let them out the door.
So the door is badly named, implying that it is "individually selective" when it is not, so doesn't quite fit my needs. Another problem is the behavior when the batteries die. If the batteries die, *the door locks*. To me this is unsafe. If the batteries die unexpectedly, the door should UNLOCK, at least from the ouside, so the cats can get inside for safe refuge, food, and water if for example I was gone overnight.
Currently for the last four days or so, after having it work for several months, the door has been refusing to allow the cats back in the house. They bang and bang at the door, but for some reason its no longer unlocking for them. I changed the batteries, and went through the entire complete reset procedure twice. Its definitely reading their tags because when they go out, it registers the tag, but they can no longer re-enter. All the serttings are correct for all four cats, full In/Out Access. So I'm not really sure what else to do. I've put it in training mode for the moment. Perhaps it is dying.
Can't really recommend this product except to replace a collar based door, especially for the price.
