We were given a bag of Hill's Science Diet when we adopted our shelter cat a few years ago; it was a special formula since she had recurrent UTI's in the shelter. When we got her home, we realized our other cat LOVED this chow too, so we kept buying it. It was expensive, and our cat never suffered from the urinary problems she'd had in the shelter, so we went back to grocery store standards and bought this occasionally as a treat. But for the past year-ish, the cats were becoming more finicky and wouldn't eat anything we brought home. We bought another bag of Science Diet Optimal Care a couple weeks ago, and when they polished it off and we bought another grocery store brand till we could get back to Petsmart, two of our three cats vomited after eating the "cheapie" brand. So I think we're just going to have to spend the extra money for Science Diet!
This might sound obvious, but cat food should have an actual animal protein (like chicken) listed as the first ingredient, and that's what Science Diet has. So many cat foods have fillers like corn and vegetable whatnots, and maybe 10 ingredients later you might see a turkey byproduct of some sort. This product has chicken listed first, then other fillers of course, but the "meat" must make all the difference because my cats go bananas for this stuff. Our rescue cat for sure recognizes the bag and nudges it when we bring it home (never does that with other food bags!). I wish it were more affordable, but if we end up throwing out half of the cheap stuff we buy, this is actually the better value in the end!
