If you're familiar with building your own furniture, the assembly for this is nothing special. It does take a bit of time (2 hours), but the end results are great. I was worried about the materials used when I first purchased it, but it seems to be a common material these day, so I went for it. It's heavier than your standard particle board, and has some heavy duty components to add to the strength. I've had a filled 37gal tank on mine for over 6 months now, and it still looks great and is very stable. I down graded to 4 stars because the finish isn't very durable when it comes to water. It soaks up any standing water pretty quickly, and will bubble slightly where it has absorbed water. I learned my lesson after the first spill! Wipe any water off ASAP, and it's fine.

This stand is very nice looking. It is a nice weight and sturdiness. The handles on the cabinets are really cute and the materials are decent.
Now for the bad part.
The directions are vague. The labeling is poor, and there was a lot of guessing on my end. There was a little too much trial and error for my liking. The directions say you need the basics as far as tools. But some of the holes were not predrilled, so midway through assembly my hands were blistered and sore. I hated putting this thing together and my hands are beat up. It ended up taking me 4+hours.
Now that it is set up and I have my tank on it, I am learning to forgive it for being such a pain in the neck. It really does look nice.

This aquarium stand is decent, but there are some caveats. First of all, it is not as complicated to build as some reviewers might say. If you're used to building furniture you can buy at any large retailer (or mass market retailer or superstore; all synonyms for the same thing since names cannot be given in a review), you'll do fine building this. As for complexity, it's the same as a much older tank stand I have for a 29 gallion tank; ultimately it's average difficulty for the aquahobby furniture industry as a whole. TWO people should build this together, unless you're confident you can do it, like me =). If you're not careful, you can damage the edges/corners/wood, like me =( [all damage was cosmetic, not structural]. While I like the overall black exterior, I noticed that some of it came off when I was building it. Specifically, moisture of any kind (such as sweat) rubbing up against any edge/corner would result in black coloring on my hand/arm. I took a mildly damp paper towel and wiped down any edges and corners; there was a decent amount of "ink" rubbed off, but the stand still retained its black look and only a little rubs off of each edge (I took off whatever the paper towels would absorb). This stand serves its purpose well - it doesn't wobble and its pretty solid once it's together. While this is pressed wood fiber board (or whatever you call it; I forget), you probably won't find another stand in the same price range made of actual wood panels. Please be realistic, you get what you pay for, which means that a completely solid wood stand will cost $$$. I like most of the storage compartments, but the middle shelf is a little weird. While having a concealed compartment (behind the 2 doors) is nice, the adjacent spaces are narrow, so keep that in mind if you want to use them! And the bottom shelf has a divider that juts out~ 7" from the back wall; nothing crazy, but it's imporant structurally. Lastly, the back wall is just cardboard, which is expected for this size and price point. I would expect the 29G stand to have a more-solid backing, but don't hold me to that (my much older 29G stand has a solid back as well, but it cost $$).

Looks good, relatively easy to assemble

I'm not exactly one of those do-it-yourselfer types, so when I opened the box and a bajillion pieces fell out my first thought was "I have made a terrible mistake". However, after taking a few breaths, sorting everything out and reading the instructions I did manage to put the thing together in only a few hours. The only issue I had was getting the little cupboard doors to sit nicely, which admittedly took a bit of fussing with.
Overall, it's a nice looking piece of furniture, and after four months of ownership my 20 gallon has yet to come crashing to the floor.

Don't Buy this Unless Assembled.

I just spent 4 and a half hours trying to assemble this stand. There are a million pieces. I followed the instructions very closely and at the part where you fit all the pieces together, its just NOT working.
Besides being difficult to put together, I don't see how it could EVER be stable to support the weight of an aquarium even if it did assemble more easily.
This product is going back to the store tomorrow!
Cons: Hard to Install, flimsy

Overly Complicated for what it is designed for

If you are looking for a book case, this is a nice looking piece of furniture. However, if you are looking for just an aquarium stand I would recommend that you get something different. This stand has an excessive amount of pieces to assemble and it is made out of presswood. The instructions are easy enough to follow but when I reached step 10...yes step 10. The pieces didn't fit together correctly and the presswood pulled apart when I attempted to complete assembly. I then had to go back over the previous 8 or so pieces and remove all the bolts and nuts so I could fit it back in the box. Too many pieces and presswood is not a good choice for anything designed to hold weight. On the plus side the return at the store went smoothly. I then purchased a real wood stand with about half the pieces.

I first bought a stand for my 30 gallon aquarium at another pet store. It was $40 more and didn't have cabinets. That same day my husband told me he saw this stand on the petsmart website. So we went to the store and they had one left. I fell in love with it because of the cabinets. I was not disappointed. It was so easy to assembly that my 10 year old did most of the work. It looks beautiful with my stand and the cabinets hide all of the goodies I have for my fish. I immediately returned the other stand and have not regretted my choice.
Pros: easy to install, easy to clean, sturdy
