Great for rats!

This is the ideal bedding for rats since you cant use cedar or pine with them because of the dust. It can affect their respiratory system and cause problems. Aspen bedding is less dusty but still gives that odor control you need. The only dust is at the bottom of the bag and you don't have to put it in the cage. I love it and you can get a big bag for cheap. Having 3 rats you need low prices.

Pros: eliminates odor, low dust, easy to clean

I think that this product is half of what it should be. It looks nice and is good but only if your hamster doesn't dig much. It's also great for tortoises. But if you have a gerbil who needs to dig a lot I would not recommend this product.

Pros: easy to clean

Cons: messy, Hard to Sift

I originally bought this bedding to use for my hamster, but after he passed away, it turned out to be great for my tortoise, mixed with a little sand. I've had no problem with it, and I think it absorbs odor really well. It's a great price and looks nice in a cage.

I use aspen because it is cheaper than Carefresh and safer than pine and cedar. I usually buy my bedding from a different store - it is aspen, too, but the rather than shavings, it is shreds. However, said store has not been having the bedding I buy as it seems to sell pretty fast. I was in PetSmart two weeks ago and decided to buy my bedding from there. The aspen was cheaper than all the other safe options, so I picked up a bag. I got home that night, changed my hamsters cage, and was VERY disappointed. This bedding is very dusty - as soon as I started dumping it into my hamsters tank, dust clouds hit my face. Not only is it dusty, but it's not soft at all. My hamster seems to agree as she instantly moved all of it out of one corner to make her nest, putting only paper towels in that corner. It's not absorbent, either. I need to spot clean her tank much more frequently using this brand. I thought, okay, maybe it will be fine for my gerbils. But I was wrong there, too. Anyone who takes proper care of their gerbils knows that gerbils need to dig and burrow, and they build complicated burrow systems. They need a substrate that will HOLD, otherwise their burrows collapse. I filled my gerbils tank up today with this bedding, and the burrows do not hold. They have collapsed several times now, which has resulted in my gerbils obsessively burrowing even more than is normal. It might be good for exercise, but it can't be good for their mentality. I will not be buying this bedding again. Next time, I'll just spend the four or five dollars more and grab a bag of Carefresh.

i use this for my robo,junior and its just great! ive heard that pine + seeder are not good for hamsters digestive system. aspen is great and smells super fresh! i also love grrreat choice branded items!!

I used both the Grreat Choice Aspen and Pine and people always ask me what the difference is between them (besides the price). Aspen is better for covering up odors because the woods itself has a much stronger woody-smell. The aspen is larger chunks but doesn't fluff up as well as the smaller chunked pine. Aspen however does not soak up liquid or solid waste as well as pine, but it does cover up the odor better. So, if you are looking for a cheap bedding to cover up smells and don't mind changing the cage once or twice a week then use aspen! This is really nice on a wallet and one bag lasts for a few cage changes.

This bedding is awesome! It comes in a huge bag! I've had my bag since July of 2011 and I still have a ton left. It lasts for a long time and it doesn't have that much dust in it. My hamster loves burring in it and making her nest out of it plus some tissues and a sprinkle of carefresh makes herself right at home. This is the best bedding I've had for my hamster. :) I <3 IT!

I understand that PetSmart is phasing out other brands and creating their own. In this case it is a failure. This bedding is terribly dusty and full of chunks. The previous product was much better and I bought big bags regularly. I will not buy this product again. Why mess with a good thing? The clouds of dust coming off of this bedding are bad, very bad. I can hardly breath, not to mention the poor guinea pigs! Sorry, I can't support this change.
