i have a 10 gallon tank and i decided to buy 3 5 pound bags (for about 3 more dollars i couldve just bought the 20 pound bad but i was sure i didnt need 20 pounds) and it turns out i probably didnt even need a third bag i couldve done with 2 but if u want to get alittle fancy and have your tank have alittle variation on the tank floor 3 is good but you'll have some left over (half a bag).
just a tip to my follow shoppers its best to have the sand angled more at the rear of the tank and less in the front kinda of a hill effect, it'll help u see into the tank easier without having to adjust your line of sight. AND MAKE SURE TO RINSE OFF THE SAND FIRST IN A BUCKET OR SPARE TANK OR YOUR WATER WILL BE REALLY CLOUDY, I ONLY DID A QUICK RINSE, AND ENDED UP DOING A 1/2 TANK WATER CHANGE TO CLEAR UP THE WATER THEN WAITING FOR THE FILTER SO TAKE YOUR TIME RINSING, IT'LL BE WORTH IT :)

Messy, but pretty

I used to have gravel, but decided when I restarted my tank after the loss of my betta that I wanted to try something more natural looking. This product fits the bill and is SO pretty!
The only thing I disliked was how messy it was to put in. Granted, I didn't rinse it, but I was not prepared for the foaming cloud of gunk that resulted from dumping it into my tank. Literally, there was a quarter inch of foam on the top of the water.
Four water changes and a good wiping down of the inside upper part of the tank to remove the foam and it's gorgeous. The end result is worth it, for sure, but man, what a mess initially. It took 24 hours of partial water changes and filter running to get it clear.
So I'd recommend it, but definitely take the rinsing to heart, maybe it's not so messy when you do that!
