After purchasing a lesser quality product which failed miserably, I purchased this heavy duty steel stake that performed to our expectations beautifully. It has strength and durability for larger, stronger dogs. The only dog we had that could free itself from it was an adult pit bull which we dog-sat a week for a friend and she did so by dislodging her jaw (which pit bulls are known for) to free herself of the collar, not the stake itself. The design, though simple, is pretty ingenious. The flares off the stake keep it from slipping back out of the soil once it has been embedded properly; and the dome cap helps keep the soil from giving and loosening around the top of the stake as the dog pulls on it. I recommend splurging a little on price to buy one size up from your dog's weight, since breed and muscle strength also play a role in your dog's ability to work it and manipulate it. PLEASE be responsible by using common sense safety and compassion when staking a pet. Be sure it is in a safe area for your pet, free of other objects that could entangle or injure your pet, and with adequate shade and clean water during hot months - shelter and safe warmth with a clean water source where it won't freeze during frigid cold months. It is not recommended that any animal be left staked or tied out for long periods of time, placed in a location vulnerable to predators, or left neglected. It is not an acceptable long term means of detaining an animal, domestic or otherwise.
